Kevinkent Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) What's the score with Sunny & the Sunliners - If I Could See You Now The Key-loc output consists mainly of this groups titles, so is RPR a national release which closely followed the local Key-loc release?. Or was it a much later release? For the purists, is Key-loc the only issue deemed suitable for OVO venues? I've seen it questioned as to wether the two releases are different versions, but they sound identical to me. Not had much joy on searching for info on this so any assistance from those more knowledgeable than I would be greatly appreciated. - Kev Edited October 26, 2011 by KevinKent
boba Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I think Key-Loc is the first label. It's also the rarer press. RPR records was based in hollywood so I'm pretty sure it's the second, larger label. It seems dumb to me to not allow you to play it on RPR but the soul police should be able to comment further.

Thanks Boba, I bought the RPR on impulse when I first heard it. Had an inkling that it might be on Key-loc, and of course it was. I'm more than happy to own it and play it but wouldn't want to call in to question the "ovosity" of anyone else's event. - Kev

Yep it's a nice double sider but the faster side is the one that really does it for me. I always play the flip when I buy vinyl and have had more than a few nice surprises. - Kev
Kris Holmes Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 RPR version cuts off the intro & starts straight at the drum fill for some reason. You guys are correct on Key-Loc being the first local & then picked up by RPR in LA. Their other on RPR "Hip Huggin Mini" is also cool. The hardcore Soul Police could very well frown upon it being played, just tell them that since it is their 2nd release on the label it was actually released at the same time as the Key-Loc.......
boba Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Their other on RPR "Hip Huggin Mini" is also cool. I think you mean "my dream"
Kris Holmes Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I think you mean "my dream" i'm the uptempo/funky guy, you're the group/ballad guy, i don't know that we'll ever agree
boba Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 i'm the uptempo/funky guy, you're the group/ballad guy, i don't know that we'll ever agree you probably know this but Harvey Averne does a cover of both songs on an Atlantic 45
Ady Croasdell Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I'm far from being a soul policeman but I've never heard of anyone being criticised for playing a legal contemporary release of the original press. Most UK originals would be banned and records like Jimmy Robins on Jerhart, O'Kaysions on ABC, Rosco Robinson on Wand etc Ady 1
Wiganer1 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 its about time we forgot the soul police this was a biggie at leister oddfellows in the 80s and you only saw RPR copies most of the time i think people are taking things WAY WAY WAY too seriously

Amsterdam Russ Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 RPR version cuts off the intro & starts straight at the drum fill for some reason. Are you sure? My copy begins with the slow organ intro that leads into the drum roll.
Kevinkent Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 Are you sure? My copy begins with the slow organ intro that leads into the drum roll. Yes, mine too Russell. Thanks for the replies guys. I reckoned I'd figured it out but wasn't 100% certain. - Kev.
Kris Holmes Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Are you sure? My copy begins with the slow organ intro that leads into the drum roll. sorry my fault, i was at work & going off the mp3 I made from my 45 which for some reason I have apparently edited the organ intro off. i just checked my 45 & the organ intro is there, so they are definitely the same.
Prophonics 2029 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 They are different sounding versions, Key Lock more echo like its recorded in a hall and RPR like its recorded in your front room.

Mmm. Or did you hear the Key-loc in a hall and listen to the RPR in your front room? Got to say that my RPR sounds just fine played good and loud. - Kev.

Ian D Thanks Ian, I was hoping that to be the case. Also considering that Key-loc is such a small and very local label, and is owned by Sunny Ozuna (maybe by another family member originally) and probably set up for recording and promoting his work, then it's perhaps not far off being a Private Press. I'll have no hesitation in playing the RPR .....anywhere. - Kev.

The first play for me was at Wigan from Gary, so I grab a copy a week later then for the last 30 years it was played in my room Lol but have played both back to back and that's my assumption.

Fair enough. - and I was having a laugh with my throw away comment btw. I don't have the Key-loc to compare so will reserve judgement but have heard other tunes i.e. Jimmy Conwell - Too Much, that would perhaps fit your description on sound quality and certainly don't class the RPR as such. Records are like jackets - they appear the same to some folk and totally different quality to others (private joke). 100 Club saturday? - Kev.
Kevinkent Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPNdY9i6KIE or it could be the other way around! Ha! Never judge the quality on a Youtube post. Anyway, just to confuse the issue, that is a Key-loc pressing with a scan of the RPR pressing for some strange reason. - Kev edit....Can't keep up with my one finger typing. lol. So both of those clips are actually the key-loc pressing. I need a rest. Edited October 26, 2011 by KevinKent
Prophonics 2029 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Hi Kev, you do find that records of the same can sound different, I have quiet a few where others have shorter or longer versions like Ike & Tina I Idolize You , Ruby, Young Jessie Big Chief.

Give me your Key-loc copy and I'll play them simultaneously on the decks at home. You're right though, there are differences in a lot of tunes - and no discernible difference (to me anyway) in others. One that's confusing me at the moment is the Madeline Strickland "Lonely Girl" double release on Mar-V-lus - but that's for another thread. - Kev.

Kevinkent Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 look forward to hearing it at Ghetto on Saturday Kev its as legit as legit can be it certainly aint a boot Hi Paul, Looking forward to Southampton, and it'll be in the box but not sure yet if it'll make the cut - to busy on here when I should be sorting out the rest of my tunes! Bonus with Saturday is the clocks going back 'cos it means a late start at the 100 Club and also effectively cuts the journey from Southampton by an hour. See you at Ghetto Soul matey! - Kev
