Flicking through an old box the other day it occured to me that I own quite a few records that I remember buying of sub standard condition with the hope of buying minters at a later date, never did though !

My question is will you buy sought after records in lower grade condition or wait for a mint quality to come along ?

deepends how cheap/ does it play but look bo*****ed, and how rare the record is, if its something you don't see that often I'd buy it in lesser condition---then sell on from a small box in a very dark all-nighter !!!!

I bought Jimmy Thomas "Above A Whisper" in terrible playing condition (only a tenner at the time - but scratches everywhere) hoping to replace it but never have yet

You've just given away your selling secret now , perhaps it was you I bought them off

Yep if I really want it and it's proving hard to find or too expensive mint.. as long as they're playable

Not replaced any yet but the intention's there if I ever have enough spare cash (hey I can dream )

Have done with some surprising results.... had those described as VG or VG+ turn up and be "undergraded" IMO.... always a bonus if got "cheaper" because of description/grading given.... if genuinely only a VG then do get a "better" one if the chance comes along, depending on what it is and how it plays though....

Had the other way aswell.... those descibed as near mint, excellent, etc., that turn up and only look/play VG .... but that's another thread Richard ....

20 years ago it was not viable to bring back 'Vg' records from the US because you couldn't sell them.

10 years ago I would buy stuff if very cheap with a view to getting a better copy.

Today all those I left behind are on ebay at daft prices! The problem is that for lot of people, new to collecting, can only afford records in dodgy condition and copies in good condition are either not affordable or don't come up for sale

I would and have bought in less good condition as long as its playable. I may have the intention to replace but if the choice is a better condition copy of one I already own or a copy of something I don't; the something I don't would win every time. But maybe thats just me

If i want a record don't care what shape it's in as long as it's playable. These days you dont know when a better copies going to come by But i always look to upgrade and if you bought it long enough ago you'll either make money or recoup it
