Raremusicdirect Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 (edited) Trying not to pick on specific re-issue labels, but I notice that more and more "rare" and in some cases not so rare 45s are being pressed up on re-issue labels. What's the reasoning behind issuing these tracks if they can still be found on original 45 ? Are there no other tracks to release ? Is it to license officially and try to pass funds to the artist, writer and or publisher ? Is it just to keep issues coming out on the re-issue label ? Is it to make some money as these tracks sell more easily ? Some other reason ? Such as making the track available to the market - even though its probably already there on mp3.... I totally understand and support the issue of unreleased material on a 45. That's adding something new to the 45s market. Just interested what people think on this area, issues around it. I know the release of re-issues isn't new, so would hope we can discuss the current position................. PS Just so I don't get shouts of hypocrisy, I have bought some myself ! NO Is it to license officially and try to pass funds to the artist, writer and or publisher ? A GOOD BY-PRODUCT SOMETIMES BUT NOT THE MAIN REASON Is it just to keep issues coming out on the re-issue label ? NO, THAT'D LOSE MONEY Is it to make some money as these tracks sell more easily ? SOMETIMES; SUPPLY AND DEMAND Some other reason ? Such as making the track available to the market - even though its probably already there on mp3.... IF PEOPLE WANT IT AND IT SELLS THAT COULD BE A REASON I totally understand and support the issue of unreleased material on a 45. That's adding something new to the 45s market. PS Just so I don't get shouts of hypocrisy, I have bought some myself ! I think you're making the assumption that the people who buy reissues are the same as buy originals. That's only the case in approx 50% of the buyers, the other 50% are vinyl lovers who don't want to spend £100+ chasing a record. They can get ten or more for that price, often with two good sides. One of our best sellers is a £50 record but our customers would rather buy a UK press for £6-£8 than chase a second hand original on Ebay. Or maybe they ain't got an American middle
Raremusicdirect Posted October 22, 2011 Author Posted October 22, 2011 Thanks Ady, reply appreciated. I think you are correct in that there are numerous types of buyer, there reasoning differing, and I guess the market does dictate what's working or otherwise................
