Guest Andy Kempster Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 coloured ... ???? is that the second or first?
boba Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 coloured ... ???? is that the second or first? not sure but of the two LP covers, the one with the girl on it is first. The girl was Ric Williams girlfriend (I think that's what they told me) and he got mad that she was on the cover so they had to change the cover.
Guest Andy Kempster Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 was referring to the 7 but sure you know that anyway...got a pic of the album cover? lets decide if she was worth getting the hump over
pikeys dog Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I don't recall seeing a plain one before the mid-nineties, not doubting they were out there, just all dealers seemed to have multi ones when I bought mine (1993ish)
TOAD Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 plain ones (pinkish?) came from soul bowl at the same time as the multi coloured design !
Guest Andy Kempster Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 plain ones (pinkish?) came from soul bowl at the same time as the multi coloured design ! thats what i was thinking but wasnt sure
TOAD Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 btw this was approx 80-81 ie when it was being played
Ian Dewhirst Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 btw this was approx 80-81 ie when it was being played When did it originally come out? I'm pretty sure I got this from Jumbo's in Leeds as a new U.S. release in the mid 70's.......? Multicoloured too..... Ian D

boba Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 there is a listing for the LP in popsike that says '77. i don't have the lp to check if there's a date on it.
Guest Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 there is a listing for the LP in popsike that says '77. i don't have the lp to check if there's a date on it. both LP's 1977 and my understanding of the single is the coloured is first issue and pink second
Guest Gogs Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Not sure about when they were issued but jm charges more for the multi-coloured issue
Julie Moore Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 i got mine from Wigan casino 1980 for 50p was a 7"
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Is this a really hard record to sell, or is it just that nobody wants to buy it off me whenever I've listed it? (My sale copy's 'coloured', by the way...)

(My sale copy's 'coloured', by the way...) i sold my pink copy very easily not that long ago on here .... but then again i think i only asked £10 for it
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 I don't think I;ve ever posted it up that cheaply, Mike, but whatever I've asked in the past (and I must have put it in sales at least two, maybe three times) it's never been anywhere near 'book price' - and I've still never sold it... Maybe I'll try again this weekend in the hope that interest in this post will generate a sale!

Dave Pinch Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 (edited) the 7in says 1977 on it.. the pink one is the promo but pink issues are also in circulation maybe they are the first issues....there were loads of multicoloureds around late 80s/early 90`s but these tend go for more money not sure as to why....a £30 record imo dave Edited October 21, 2011 by dave pinch
Pete S Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 I think it was played and went big in 79 - remember hearing it at the Lafayette monday night do's.
Hornet Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 remember going myself but got it in my head it was a tuesday nite !!
Pete S Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 remember going myself but got it in my head it was a tuesday nite !! Probably was - in late 79 it was definitely monday but it was also on a tuesday and sometimes a thursday
purist Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 (edited) Two presses of the album are different physically as well as the cover (which i wasnt aware of- thanks for that info Boba - https://www.popsike.c...0300348552.html this says there's an extra track on this pressing of the album ! true ? anybody confirm? imho all Pink are promotional copies, with or without label writing to confirm (I think this because if you check out the 12"s from this label, I've only ever seen promo's with pink labels, plus there's no multi coloured promo's - unless you know different?) btw the 12" label of Party Hardy says 1977, cannot imagine the 7" being released at a different time to the 12 - can anyone confirm if all 12"'s are long/short or do they exist with Happy on the flip ? do multi 12"'s exist at all, or are they all pinky ? ( there are numerous examples where wdj's are obviously promotional without the words printed on the label, but we all accept them as promo's, don't we ? perhaps this should be another thread ? promo's without the words promotional or demo on them?) purist Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Whats the story behind the Bee Records Pressing with Keys To the City on the flip? Warren Recordings London ? love the credits " David Porter & The Music Merchants" - I'd remembered the David Porter part of the cover up name, but did Richard really call it DP & MM ?

David Porter & The Soul Searchers I thought
Guest martyn Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 Remember it first being played in 1979, all the copies I personally saw being used at allnighters around that time were pink, so I'd allways thought that they were the first press or perhaps demos for the multi's
Guest Nick Harrison Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 (edited) Pink pressings copies first - followed by the Multi Coloured releases. Recorded in 1977 as previously dated - spun by Richard Searling during the late months of 1978 (Pink) and gained mass exposure during 1979 along side Larry Houston, Benny Troy, Roy Dawson, Carol Anderson, Flame And King and his Bold Ones etc. Deffo covered as David Porter and the Music Merchants. Yes - was always of a strong understanding that this was a Bee bootlegg illegal promo. Pressed under Richard's cover up name and disrespectfull towards the writing and singing talents of David Porter IMHO. Bee have a very simular pressing of the Demand 7" release's of the booted Wilber Walter Jr and The Chandlers. But Hey Ho.
Guest sigher the gutter snype Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 so the story has it "happy" was ripped from a song penned by danny noland and carl snyder...they never got any recognition for it..... As for "Happy", good God. We knew they had ripped us off, but we never knew that they released the song in the U.K. and had some success with it. Dan wrote it in the early 70s, and we recorded the track in 1973. And having listened to their record, that is our track--it's the same rhythm section as on "Happy" (me on guitar, Dan on bass, Dave Wollert on organ, Tom Gierman on the drums). And it's the exact tune that Dan wrote, words and music; they just replaced Dan's vocal with the group, and added the strings. And we never knew; we always assumed that they hadn't gotten anywhere with it. By the 80s we were all doing other things, so we just didn't hear about it. I did copyright the song when Dan originally wrote it, and I believe I have the certificate here someplace. But so many years have gone by, and I'm sure that whatever money they made is long gone
Prophonics 2029 Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 I got a multi coloured copy from a box that had a pink copy in as well, compared them and chose the MC one due to it being a different press with a wider play area and a small run out.
Prophonics 2029 Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 I thought Boba said the group were a reformed band that recorded on King in the 60ts the VH in the 70ts?.

It had to be Andre Williams and not the other group members itself that stole the track though.

The Velvet Hammer, Walter and the Admerations, Green Berets, and High Society are all the same group.
Patto Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Great record and the reason why the coloured one gets more money is that its (Beautiful) 1

TOAD Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 sorry soul sam played this at wigan see refosoul for the proof " this goes out for the wolverhampton and telford crowd" poss played at the laffayette two weeks before the casino ! Fact !
Bo Diddley Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Hi Tim, I think you're right. As I recall, Pep and Ian "The Barber" Tyrer played this at "The Laf" covered up as "The Anderson Brothers". Then seemed to pop up all over the place. In the late 70's/early 80's, Pep bought lot's of new releases to sell to us lot which went on to become well regarded. Including, Prince Phillip Mitchell - I'm So Happy, Tyrone Barclay - Man of Value. Most of us at the time bought loads of them - mostly good but a few crapper's!! Cheers Kev Bod.

Fact ! I'm sure you're right Tim, was played at the Laff before wigan, and that's why Sams play of it at Wigan was dedicated to our lot. I remember Pep having loads of copies of the album and the single, at the Laffayette one night too, sold them for £5 each, Crispi bought one.

It was in The Velvet Hammer interview that the King record was played, not sure if its Lorrie & Lance or the one I've Enjoyed Being Loved By You?.
honky Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 As an aside, here is the Velvet Hammer / the Green Berets doing "Happy" live at our Dig Deeper night back in 2009: Someone get them over to the UK - they were incredible live!! - honky

I'm sorry, I can't think of what you're talking about. Sorry if this is something obvious that I'm forgetting or sorry if I'm misunderstanding you. If you know a specific time in the interview that I play it I can listen to it. Thanks.
