Pete S Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Every time I hear the other side of If You Ever Walk Out Of My Life by Dena Barnes, How Am I (You Ought To Know) I think to myself, why wasn't this record bloody massive, it's absolutely fantastic, it's got everything you could want from a Detroit dancer and I'm sure if it hadn't been for it's equally magnificent A side it would have been a huge record. How come this has never made it, anyone ever played it out? 3
Dave Moore Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Been played out quite a bit Pete I'd have thought. I know I've heard it on numerous occasions and used to to play it every now when I used to 'DJ'. Think you pinpointed why it was never massive though, the other side. Regards, Dave
Robbk Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 What I can't figure out is why both sides were never played on US radio stations. We did hear some of Harry Balk's productions that were placed on Big Top, and Impact Records. Both sides of this record were better (IMO) than most of his productions that DID receive lots of airplay.
Premium Stuff Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Pete 'Who Am I' the official A side Cheers Richard
Pete S Posted October 16, 2011 Author Posted October 16, 2011 Pete 'Who Am I' the official A side Cheers Richard I should have know that
Premium Stuff Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Says PLUG SIDE on the DJ copies and is by far the better song One of my all time favourites and a perfect example of that mid-tempo 60s Detroit girlie sound Cheers Richard

Pete S Posted October 17, 2011 Author Posted October 17, 2011 Been played out for donkeys years Pete i play it every now n again whenever i get the chance both sides Detroit Magic.. Never heard it once in 37 years Ian. Apart from at my house.
Guest giant Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 ive always classed it as a double sider. agree with you mate, double sider no doubt
Guest Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) I have never much liked either side myself. Can understand that Ken, as she gives a Marmite vocal performance! As much as I love both sides (IYEWOOML is a CLASSIC!), I would've loved to have heard someone else take a stab at the song...imagine Pat Lewis or Barbara Mercer doing it!?! Steve L Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Like Pete I havent heard Who Am I played out in 37 years (not that I can remember anyway) Like all discussions of this type it all depends on where you've been/go and when Both sides are masterpieces to me
Guest Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Played a lot in the south PETE.... (But then of course we do have X-Seedingly good taste down here old boy....)
dthedrug Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 HI ALL It's a good point!! that applies to many great rare soul sounds that have quality B sides the ALEXANDER PATTON is a typical example of what I believe was PETE'S point, I no TED (#1 midlands DJ) played it, it's a hard one to choose if you have a full dance floor is it the A or B side? As I say there's loads of examples to choose from DAVE
