William Cummings - Make My Love A Hurting Thing

re. williams cummings; I bought my first copy from soul bowl from his £1 special page in 1975. Tim Ash also bought a copy from the £1 specials around the same same time. Soul bowl originally had it priced at £4 on his rarities page in 1974 but probably couldn't sell it and like many records ended up on the £1 special page. At the same period I also bought the zeke & soul setters for a £1 (thanks again soulbowl)

I can't say that I ever saw many other copies for sale, on lists or at venues, so my guess is that it was and always has been rare.

You have to remember that back in the 7ts most collectors were not chasing odd-ball label obscurities, so you didn't have a great deal of competition if you wanted to buy things like william cummings. Many collectors, would see william cummings as being too left field; not strictly Northern and certainly not considered for public consumption at a club.

My also has Carl Fortnum in the run out groove so I guess he owned it at one point.

I highlighted the current one on EvilBay to Bearsy after recently purchasing mine. I advised to approach with caution for the following reasons, hence question followed on here :

1. The image was bad quality. Sellers of rare records normally make the effort to provide fully ledgible scans.

Further I had noticed a previous sale attempt and emailed the seller to ask :

a. Why the previous sale fell through

b . Was the label colour red or purple ? I seemed to think their may have been a red label boot - this seems to be incorrect

c. What was the reserve price ?

d. Could he provide all the run out details from both sides

His reply was "its $26 you can now bid" - no other points covered...

Thats bound to raise suspicions.............

Buyer beware with an unhelpful seller.

Everything that can be seen in the scans looks right, except for the part below the Side A and Side B which looks a bit long ie may have more characters, but you just can't tell from the poor scan.........

Anyone else get a better response from the seller ?

The 70s sounds like 45 nirvana for the left field enthusiasts :)

It was. Even in 1976 we knew this was a rare record. By the time I eventually got it I'd pretty much dropped off deejaying on the Northern scene, so it just languished on my shelves 'til I moved it on like numerous others over the years LOL....

I'd completely forgotten what it sounds like 'til I just played it on You Tube. I don't think it was suitable in the 70's but boy does it sound strong now.....

Thanks Mark, for clarifying the soul bowl story.

And for getting up early to do so...:)

I emailed him to ask if he had a soundfile ....i figured if he had a soundfile he might actually have the record?

He could'nt do mp3's but went one better and gave me his phone number to ring ,so i could hear it while he played it.

Dunno what the time difference is, but when i rang him last night ,i could hardly hear it cos i think he was in the middle of making breakfast , :g:

well it sounded like he was cooking some bacon :D

I wonder if this is the list Mark? £1 specials with William Cummings listed at 41 :) also slipping in at 47 - Skip Jackson. Think the list is a bit later than '75 because Eddie Horan's LP on HDM is listed on the reverse... anyhow thought people might like to see it...

I am sure many of these records, listed early seventies, may well have changed in value due to the benefit of perspective.........................that is items have proven to be rarer than first thought................or conversely more common.......
