dthedrug Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 HI ALL HERE IS A QUOTE FROM JOHN ON THIS GREAT RECORD :- Comments Same group who recorded that superb harmony Doo-Wopper “SONIA” for Blue Beat. Comes this 1968 UK 45 that completely captures the Northern Soul sound, with Jamacian Siggy Jackson UK production and Bill Shepherd’s slick arrangement, is the perfect vehicle for this NS dancer that few would believe was not USA born. Check the sound file you’ll certainly be impressed, with the glaring potential for Club-play and the flipside is strong too. Before you today is the Dog-Rare DEMO! Tiny “unknown” autographed on label - vinyl has some light surface marks but as you can hear it plays fabulously. A sleeper that will awake… NICE ONE JOHN, and confirms what I found out about the group when I got it from Jim Silles 20 years ago. and a DEMO CLASSIC STUFF NICE ONE. RANKING JOHNNY BOY ,DAVE K
Chalky Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Does anyone know who the Marvels are? Was also released in Belgium on Frankie and Germany on Ariola, with Picture Sleeves. Do the sleeves give any info? Green and White UK Demo Was it released in france too...
dthedrug Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 Does anyone know who the Marvels are? Was also released in Belgium on Frankie and Germany on Ariola, with Picture Sleeves. Do the sleeves give any info? Green and White UK Demo Was it released in france too... Hi All I will ask Jim Siles the full story but the gist is that the group who recorded "KEEP ON SEARCHING" are the same band who recorded Jamaican music and much of there music turns up on many fine labels in the UK, as session players, just as the top white session players did, also many a fine singer made their bread & butter as session singers, a god example would be BLUE MINK and JOHN MARVELLS BLUES BRAKERS, ALSO BLUESOLAGY COME TO MIND, between that lot and you Hawk talent, but others like JOE MEEK, ANDREW OLDEM and so on had there say but in our story the main man was the HAWK Who used his name to form another fictitious band the MO-HAWKS, both groups had the same members and as suh turned out some of the finest sessions from the mid 60's on wards, so in a nutshell they are all session players and singers led by MO HAWK, I hope that has got you thinking? but as far as I hae been informed, this is reliable info, but there are many experts out there who might question this as being wrong, most of the HAWKS Work come out in Europe, here we have 2 reords by the MARELS that are well worth getting, the GAS 45 has a vocal on the other side, but this was the side we played at the time 1970, GI GI also released on Contempo and there is a write up in BLUES & SOUL SHOWING A FUL BUSTED GIRL SINGER? NICE! :wicked:DAVE
bri pinch Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 this is a nice tune by them, just sold a uk demo of keep on searchin too

boba Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 it came out in holland, belgium france and germany all on different labels with different pic sleeves...are you saying there are two german sleeves bob..just sold the uk demo for £60..the one chalky posted up is my picture No, just pointing out the german sleeve that I have (on the injection label) is the same photo as the green sleeve but is an ugly brownish red instead of green. Thanks everyone for all the info on the group in this thread, I knew nothing about them and was interested in finding out more.
Dave Pinch Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 (edited) this is a nice tune by them, just sold a uk demo of keep on searchin too this was issued in 82 in belgium.....recorded in 68 tho....does anyone know if there is an earlier release in any country or did it just stay in the can for a few years Edited October 2, 2011 by dave pinch
boba Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 I reread through this thread and now I'm confused. Why was the Marvels Five record (which got a US release on uptown) posted? Are the Marvels Five the same group as the Marvels (maybe plus 2 members)? Is one of the people on the pic sleeve Jackie Edwards? Anyone got a full discography of the soul records by this one (or two) groups? thanks in advance.
TOAD Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 bobo just counted 35 marvels 45s all look at a quick glance to be uk productions
TOAD Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 no mention of keep on running in my huge book and not in the 35 they recorded
Wiggyflat Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Some footage of them.............your answer is probably in the comments after the vid.
boba Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 thanks so much, the comments give the names of the three singers and say they were occasionally joined by Jackie Edwards and Hazel McCauley. I guess they must be the "five" in Marvels Five. Do the other 35 45s sound like straight soul also or are most of them reggae?

dthedrug Posted October 3, 2011 Author Posted October 3, 2011 no mention of the above records or the marvel 5. 1962 -1980 35 recordings only 3 issued in Jamaica hope this is of interest Hi All ..Toady Boy there are some obscure records on them President Labels that are crap! there is one on GULL and it's the same group but the singers surely are not the same ones, this is Ali to common in our scene! for example I first saw Brown oat the Rainbow (Finsbury Park Astoria)in 71 the line up was every thing you would want to see Fred Wesley Botsy and Marcio Parker were al there the whole event isby far the best soul show I have seen even better than the DELLS ,and you can't compair to the show had in Wolves so my point the 3 recordsyou a speaking about isthe same group as was al those who worked with JAMES BROWN DAVE
Guest theoriginator56 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 saw the marvells 1970 six in one club tonbrige kent still got the fly some were. oh yey last time see jim silles bofay arms snt jons hill clapham wen pama dice was givin some.
bri pinch Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 the "you've been running" 45 which came out in belgium in 1982, states " a ziggy jackson production" and sounds to me like it was recorded around the same time as the uk columbia 45

dthedrug Posted October 4, 2011 Author Posted October 4, 2011 it came out in holland, belgium france and germany all on different labels with different pic sleeves...are you saying there are two german sleeves bob..just sold the uk demo for £60..the one chalky posted up is my picture HI ALL I wish I had known you were seling the DEMO! why so cheap? for such a rare UK NORTHERN SOUL record that's what I don't get?? DAVE
Dave Pinch Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 HI ALL I wish I had known you were seling the DEMO! why so cheap? for such a rare UK NORTHERN SOUL record that's what I don't get?? DAVE i sold it on ebay about 2 months ago dave.......i put it on here for £100 twice. it was there for all to see....never sold. so i put it on the bay startin at £9.99 and it made £60..maybe all its worth....bought it from mick smith for £15 years ago so cant grumble..seriously tho i dont think the uk issue or the euro labels are worth anymore than £40 dave
Dave Pinch Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 Bob, german release is on Ariola and has the green sleeve as pictured. Injection release is dutch or belgian. the dutch release is also on columbia in a nice p/s as well
dthedrug Posted October 4, 2011 Author Posted October 4, 2011 i sold it on ebay about 2 months ago dave.......i put it on here for £100 twice. it was there for all to see....never sold. so i put it on the bay startin at £9.99 and it made £60..maybe all its worth....bought it from mick smith for £15 years ago so cant grumble..seriously tho i dont think the uk issue or the euro labels are worth anymore than £40 dave HI DAVE .So you did, this was just a comment of surprise from me that it went for such a low price, your logic is a bit like mine in that you look at the record and orig price to value it rather than the current market price? i call this the Jeanette White Music A&M DEMO UK issue as the going rate for it has never increased for over 20 years and it's current value is still the same £25, I would never let my copy go for that price? Even though I have been through really tough times at the moment, I will not sell my records to sort out a situation that was inflicted upon me, when Pete Smith sold his John Andrews last year, I thought at the time although he got good money for it, if it was me i would have to sell 2000 records before i sold my copy as like the marvels any UK SOUL will always be the crown jewels for the future, and when you look back at the records you once had don't you regret selling them? another example is this the original NOLAN CHANCE DEMO that I paid £1.75 from John Anderson 1974and I gave to Mick Smith in 78 when i walked of the scene to clean myself up, cost me £200 to replace it from Dave Welding, my point is in this example £200 is about as cheap as it goes for that record, and i know Mick would buy it tomorrow of me, but it will cost me £250 if i wanted to buy me another copy, as i say the reason I did not buy your DEMO is i did not have the cash had you stated it was a trade i would have given my issue and some cash for it, but you did not know that, i don't know wgo owns the copy on Johns list but it is bound to go for 3 fugues Dave in the future if I see a record on your listings I will try and bata for them? DAVE the SKINT.
Guest MARIO MANJARREZ Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 (edited) You can see The Marvels here backing Dandy's hit https://youtu.be/J3V_umoW5kM Dave the drug, you definitely must to share must obscure SOUL JA! maybe in this topic or in other. dthedrug Posted October 7, 2011 Author Posted October 7, 2011 That Marvels is a ten bob record. 7/6d to be correct Pete? As I have mentioned before my SOUND SYSTEM is bespoke and ideal for playing soul and reggae it was made for me, and one day we will get a rare record collectors night going, and anyone can have a go at playing whatever comes from your box, all that's needed is a pub that is on it's last legs, someone to lift my eqpt, as I have to many health issues, there is a template of what i want this Sunday in NORWICH it only gets a few collectors but the spectrum of tunes played beats any all-nighters I don't care if only 5 people come as long as they enjoy it, any takers or in crowds please contact me, i am 60 in JAN that could be the start, do 6 over the year, all i need is a few collectors to commit themselves to attend you cant all be apathetic on a Sunday DAVE 4 F**K SAKE KILWORTH
