dthedrug Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 Hi All I am well aware, that some of the posts on SS do become samey? but was hoping from you a better response, any way here are to records that still get me going, both from the UNITED ARTIST LABEL 1,Henry Jerone "uptight" this is a brilliant instrumental, from top man Henry (it's the pink pant ha) played at the TORCH but not since? why not listen to the whole thing now! 2. Electric Indian "keem-o-sabee" b/w "broad street" the A side is a great oldie, but the B side is every thing I like in soul instrumentals, it's the break in this one, that hits the spot and if sampled would be as god to-day, both these singles get you ready for TORCH 11. DAVE
slimharpo Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 2 early ones tfrom 1958 that I still play regularly that I think were on the cusp of Doo Wop and Soul are 1. Well! The Olympics on the flip of Western Movies, a great R&B/Soul dancer IMO 2. Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart, the flip of Yakety Yak. Led by the Bass Singer Will 'Dub' Jones and soaring tenor from Cornell Gunter plus one of the greatest soul sax solos ever IMO by King Curtis. Slim

dthedrug Posted October 4, 2011 Author Posted October 4, 2011 HI ALL THIS IS MY RECORD FOR TODAY 4th October 11, it's the B side of this scruffy water damaged Ember DEMO that I got from Paris the record is a chicken and egg for myself, in what come first? the YUM YUMS I assume and the Brothers Grimm 2nd and and who discovered it, again I have assumed it was one of the 100 Club 6ts boys Ady, Mick, Randy, Ian C, or Pete Wid, however I may be giving credit to the weong in crowd? the record is on the B SIDE of the YUM YUMS classic Gonna be a big thing, which was a cheap as chips at the Casino in fact it was considered the booby prize as the Sapphires was massive, but how wrong we were to dismiss the YUM YUMS?? LOOKY LOOKY is a record that I got because I thought it was a version of the OJAYS on Neptune, I have always preferred the Brothers Grimm as it just has a Little extra something for my taste, either way even water damaged it's a rare DEMO and the YUM YUMS IS AT LEAST 4 X THE VALUE, MY FIRST COPY WAS £2.50. Again no sound clips but I am sure it's on you tube? again either version should be played, DAVE
Guest miff Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Got to be one of my all time faves this, the Horns just get me every time and the passion of the vocals, at that little guitar break, This isnt rare for a reason,it sold cos its good, Probably a copy in most folks box and gets over looked, go on dig it out, or even better play it out, I did once and cleared the floor ????
Guest miff Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 This stops me in my tracks every time i play it, Probably the better known side here is "I Carnt use you girl" released in 1969 as far as i can tell it never charted but seems a popular song
grant Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Gene Faith - My Babys Missing - Virture, Gene being the lead singer of the Volcanos, Good shout, fantastic underplayed tune 1
Guest miff Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 (edited) Another one from me on Cassablanca, Greg Perry, "Come on down" https://youtu.be/-ceKmWak1F8 Edited October 7, 2011 by miff
Sebastian Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Another one from me on Cassablanca, Greg Perry, "Come on down" 70s floaters hardly ever get any better than this. Top, top tune!
Guest Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 very nice, have just pulled out the lp again, totally forgotten about it....thanks
Geeselad Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Mentioned it on here before but, Gloria Gaynor- You'll be sorry- Jocida much Cheapness here, payed £15 of you English pounds for it me sen, her first record. Its uptempo, has an amazingly accomplished vocal style for one so young and an unmistakable latin feel to the production, get it while you can.
Guest Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 Gloria Bouschell - Find Yourself Another Man - Mercury Top Sister-Soul on the Funky-Northern tip As good as Angela Davis on Flaming Arrow...better even...and cheaper
Pete S Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 This fabulous JA Soul: Sorry don't mean to be perdantic but it's as British as they come, Chris Blackwell produced it, though not sure if it came out as Owen Gray over here, might be credited to The Sound System.

(happy) FEELING, TUNE UP! DAVE

dthedrug Posted October 8, 2011 Author Posted October 8, 2011 HI HAVE 2 RECOMENDATIONS FOR TO-DAY, BOTH ARE FROM PYE PICCADILLY LABEL. 1. From the JIMMY JAMES LP "OPEN UP YOUR SOUL" NSPL 18231 Side 2 track 5 - "if you are gonna love me" a great song by Ebony Keyes Uptempo class, this is defenantly one to be played (again sorry no sound clip)) but again find it and play it, you will not regret it, as my repputation is at stake, the LP is quite rare value £30, does it exist on a 45 anywhere??? 2. Perhaps you may agree with me that if you collect US records and only had a few UK 45s surely this would be one of them??????? STELLA STAR - "BRING HIM BACK" PICCADILLY 7N 35366 A, One of the greats, however it is the B side that I am plugging, one of the best UK cover of a DETRIOT record/song in this case JJ Barnes "say it" again it's quality on this added to it's soulfulness is John Schroeder Orch, if you have not heared these 2, please try and hear them, I accept a lot of you are into more modern stuff rather than a record that was played 25 years ago, but for thosse of you who don't no the records try seeking thhemm out DAVE

Anyway my choice for today (and future) is Ila Van - You Made Me This Way on PIP, despite it being a 1972 recording (modern in some eyes) it is just a great track, far better than 'Cant Help Lovin That Man'. I Last heard this at M's circa 1979. If any record needs reactivating this does, instead of playing the same old known sounds. TOTP
Swifty Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 My Choice for today is CAROL ANDERSON - HOLDING ON / YOU BOY - MID-TOWN Lovely Detroit Xover imho of course Cheers Swifty
