Guest brummiemick Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 As I said in my new member introduction I havent been to a Northern Soul do in Over 30 years. Together with my wife and a couple of friends we are going to a do down here in Bournemouth on 15th October BUT I would like to do something next weekend and would like some recommendations. Although we are in Bournemouth I don't mind how far we have to travel. However looking at the events calendar I frankly don't know where to start. Be very grateful if anyone could give us some ideas - basically as it's been so long we want a guaranteed good time and will leave the experimenting till later on Thanks Mick
Guest MrC Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 (edited) It's a long way to travel, but you could do hell of a lot worse than the New Century Soul Niter at Radcliffe, Manchester. Always well attended, and all kinds of music covered in the different rooms, so you'd be sure of finding something you wanted to listen/dance to. Southampton soul club have a more motown orientated soul night on, a bit closer to home too :-) Edited September 18, 2011 by MrC
Guest brummiemick Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Cheers mate and thank you very much for the response. Is the do in Manchester well attended? As for Southampton we will be definitely paying them a visit soon but fancy somewhere further afield this weekend. All that said and done I am surprised given the evident passion and friendliness of so many on people on here that you were the only person who offered up a suggestion. Having read the many and varied posts I expected several suggestions.

Radcliffe is generally well attended, and I know there's few people from here on SS going, could be the perfect opportunity to say Hi properly. There's also a pretty good DJ line up :-) It is the 38th Anniversary of Wigan Casino opening this weekend of course, and there are a few things on celebrating that fact. Check out the weekly view on the events calender, there's clickable links to the flyer/info page for just about every event. https://www.soul-sour...week-1316347200 I thought you'd have had more answers to your question too!! I would really suggest you attend the Burnley All Nighter at the Kestrel Suite on the 15th of next month, great crowd, great atmosphere, great music, and a fantastic venue! If you want the biggest oldies all niter in the country at the moment, you need Kings Hall in Stoke on the 1st October. Always packed, and the venue they used for filming the "Soulboy" movie. You'll find a lot of people on here may slag it off for playing the same played out oldies all the time (but a lot of those people still go and use it as a social event), but it really could be the place to go if you haven't been out for a bit. Wherever you choose, I'm sure you'll make some new friends! Happy Soulin'! Paul Edited September 21, 2011 by MrC
Spacehopper Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 go go children is on the first saturday of every month in bristol and is always well attended and has a great atmosphere, across the board sounds and ages!..always a friendly vibe, northern ,rnb classics and unknown with the odd ska tune thrown in..9 till 2am only £3 guest on the 1st oct is matt from trowbridge who has some big indemanders and put together a great set too on the 24th i believe riverside in gloucester is on which is normally a good little soul night dean
Steve L Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 This goes against the grain for me but not having been to a northern do for 30 years I think you'd be better sticking to a venue that plays classic oldies only. Kingsway Hall at Forest Town (near Mansfield) would give you just that but its a long way to travel for a night that finishes at 12.30ish. Sorry cant recommend anything further South along those lines. Have fun whatever you do

Tim Smithers Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 (edited) Theres a free Motown nite in totton / southampton this sat with 5 djs, see events for more details Edited September 21, 2011 by tim smithers
Guest rach Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 SAT 24 SEP If you don't mind travelling this is a great one to go to, has a mixture of classic oldies floor, and an allnighter on the Saturday night, plus a rare room ... nothing on in Bournemouth this weekend, however SAT 15 OCT is a very friendly soul nite, playing an across the board policy. If you go to the events calendar and click on local, it will throw up events within a 50 mile radius Hope you find something soon Rach

I think people may be a little reluctant to suggest somewhere just in case it's not your cup of tea given the distance you will be travelling. This soul lark is far from an exact science In answer to your question, Radcliffe is usually busy and there is the bonus of having 3 rooms to choose from. Come and say hello if you do make it!
Guest brummiemick Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 WOW everybody thank you for the suggestions. There are several here that I would like to attend at some point. Now I will go through everything and make a decision about this weekend. Thanks Again Mick
Guest brummiemick Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 Theres a free Motown nite in totton / southampton this sat with 5 djs, see events for more details Hi Tim Thanks for this - after much umming and ahhing we are now going to Southampton tomorrow. We were going to go "up north" but have to be back on Sunday quite early so it would have been a struggle! We are also going to The Loft, Bournemouth in October but intend to try out others further afield before the end of the year. Thank you and everyone else for the advice - we hope to meet up with many of you soon KTF!
