i can remember being at the 100 club in the mid eighties and buying a copy of ty karim "lighten up baby" on romark off Guy H assuming it was the belting 60s gem.I couldn't wait to get home and give it a spin, boy oh boy was i dissapointed! so dissapointed i threw it across the room.Bloody hell i'd just blown £7 on a slow durge of a record, however i did manage to sell it a week later and get my money back  funny how tastes change as i'd give my right arm to own it now and to be fair its probably rarer than the original version.

Has this or similar happened to anyone else?

  • Funny thing is me and Andy Lett was talking about this on facebook last week Ginger did the same thing with "Lighten Up" in the 70s. I have always loved bot

  • My mate, came running out of the record bar at w/cwith a copy of the Del-capris on Karma sutra, thinking he`d bought richards cover up at the time

  • Loads of people did that back when The Lovelites first started to get played. I much prefer the slow one myself.

dont forget to keep a lookout for the brooks brothers on uk pye :g::yes:

i ordered Kenny Lynch-"Half the days gone and i havent spent a penny" thinking i was ordering Kenni Burke-"let somebody love you", DOH!

I bought Joe Matthews - "Sorry Ain't Good Enough" on Thelma from one of the big UK dealers at what I thought was a bargain price

As it turned out it was the re-release on Thelma 114 backed with the un-released "We Got A Good Thing Going" rather than the original release on Thelma 107 with "You Better Mend Your Ways" on the other side

Basically, poor lazy listing by the seller

Still think I should have sent it back but for some reason I never did

Cheers

this seems all too easy to do these days especially on ebay as there seem to be endless bootlegs and misleading info ranting_1.gif

Ouch!

That Falcons is one of the best male group sounds ever recorded - did you ever get one?

Cheers

In 1978 I bought a Don Varner on Quinvy in the record bar at Wigan, yes you guessed it, bootleg, thought it was original.

Paid a fiver, doh!.....

In my defense, the guy was a well known big seller & had a box full of rare gems & this was lurking at the back, still got the pressing today, a tribute to my foolish youth, I'll never let it go.

A mate of mine still takes the p@ss with the tear stained face thing, the irony of the title is not lost on him, makes me laugh every time.

I was super-pleased many years ago to buy a UK Mercury copy of Damita Jo's I'll Save The Last Dance thinking it was the same as her then popular stomping version on Ranwood.

Alan

OV Wright's What Did yo Tell This Girl Of Mine on Backbeat thinking it was the same version as the UK Sue issue.

I recently bought a cover version of Deon Jackson's "Love makes the world go round" on UK by none other than Beryl Reid!

Hey guess what, totally different song, and if you've heard Beryl Reid sing....

mate of mine bought a copy of You Don't KNow Where Your Interest lies in the record bar at Wigan, looked at it on the coach home and thought it looked a bit weird, what with it having the artist name scratched out. You can guess the rest...

I found a UK copy of this in a junk shop, and sold it to a mate, I never played it, this would have been late 72 or early 73.

So nearly 40 years later I find out it is not the same record.

I'm sure I admonished you about that Beryl Reid thing years ago on this very site, Pete.

In (maybe) the early 80s I had an old photocopied guide to rare UK soul singles that I think you were responsible for. I scored an HMV demo of the Beryl Reid tune on Oldham market and thought I was in for treat. I imagine the look on my face was similar to yours when the needle hit the record...

I've heard that Barbara Mercer - "Call on me" on Capitol,is a different version than the Sidra one.I mean, who'd buy the Capitol version without checking..... :)

You're not alone, did the same thing myself

Jodi Mathis "Mama" US Capitol. The issue has "Don't You Care Any More", forgot to check, the one I bought was a Demo, "Mama" on both sides..

how about this...off me face in the Highland room. bought Strawberry Jam version of 'Personally' for a quid somehow thinking I was buying Bobby Paris on British!! ! Thinking was that it was UK issue . I saw Pye( I know it was blue!), thought Polydor!!! What a bargain, till my mate says 'WTF YOU BOUGHT THAT FOR? ,
