Geordiejohnson Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 (edited) Hi Dave As you know i pondered for a while before i bought my copy from the reggae brigade in New York they are more over zellous about rare originals than the Northern scene is, especially on jamaican records as there seems to be no consistancy, i nearly bought one with a picture sleeve originally but didnt see the actual record so cant vouch for the label but what i was told by the guys in the usa was As chalky rightly points out the original (are they demos?) are the one he has listed, and they are thick/heavy pot like pressings a bit like the early third world records, the reggae boys then said that the issues were on 2 other different coloured labels a beige and flat lightish blue and then another, who knows what that was, possibly the one you've found on popsike it had a black and white picture sleeve, but was a later date (how much later i dont know) to meet demand, then the boots appeared that i suppose mimicked the later original press, but im guessing at that. Geordiejohnson Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Doh...... Ive just clicked the links......certainly the one on popsike looks plausible, would the truth be in the type of pressing it is?? a lot of the stuff ive had in my hands from around this era seems to be pretty thick, heavy, none flexible pressings, i know its not a benchmark but all my early third world stuff or other pressings from jamaica are like this its only the releases or pressings outside jamaica that are the bog standard vinyl. I know my 12 inch Now that weve found love needs an army to carry it Geeoooooordie
Geordiejohnson Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Dave PM TSU Tomatoes, read on another thread that he met AJ brown maybe he can give us the concise run down of the labels??
Dave Pinch Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 definately a strange one...... the only one thats a boot/repress whatever is the one chalky posted up and where he says it is. this is the one plummy has on his website. didnt really look into the other variations up til now..AJ must be a bit of a celebrity in JA now with the artwork and what have you. he also spent some time in the states..maybe he even pressed some copies up there dave
Guest Brett F Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 (edited) Link i posted earlier plus a link to a thread on subject from some time back. https://www.ebay.com/...#ht_1076wt_1185 Only one thing certain one of the presses came first..................but which one, hey come on Simon you've been quite on this subject and your usually very vocal. Always thought this one confusing, i talked with Neil Forbes on Sunday, in London, he's the guy who met AJ Brown, he says the white with blue letters is only the original.( first one in pics Chalky posted) Edited August 30, 2011 by Brett F
Dave Pinch Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 (edited) i think there all white with blue letters..they just look a bit different.. only the newer repress has more obvious recent typeface. still blue and white tho Edited August 30, 2011 by dave pinch
Steve Plumb Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Just to clarify that the Blue/White lookalike copies on my site https://www.soulmusic.co.uk/New_Stuff.htm (about 10 45's down the page) are of course represses. The guy I bought them off got them directly from A J Brown whilst on a visit to Jamaica about 4 years ago, so they are not boots, they are represses from Jamaica by A J Brown himself. Most of these copies had a slight warp to them and it was only recently that the guy found some flat ones back in his store and sent them to me (I have three left by the way!) The dark purple text copies came into the UK in the late 80's and were sold by dealers like Voices etc as second issues. I always presumed these were legal too but cannot be 100% certain on this? These were the two reissues i was aware of but i have heard A J Brown has pressed other batches up over the years so there could easily be more variations around. So if it don't look like Chalky's scan with the vinyl description that goes with it, then it's more than likely a reissue? Hope this helps Cheers Steve
Tsu Tomatoes Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Just to clarify that the Blue/White lookalike copies on my site https://www.soulmusic...k/New_Stuff.htm (about 10 45's down the page) are of course represses. Cheers Steve The ones your contact got directly from AJ himself Steve, must be the only official represses/2nd issues. I'm guessing AJ got them pressed up himself, after he got wise to the records popularity. At the time of the earlier boots, the master copy was in a JA studio hence the reason he knew nothing about them. At the time we met him (6 years ago) AJ had recently been reunited with the master copy.
Steve G Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Think Dave Halsall on here may know the story as he met AJB on a cruise ship.
Dave Pinch Posted August 31, 2011 Author Posted August 31, 2011 if the other two designs are boots there certainly 80`s boots. and one of them even has a picture sleeve so why would this be. never really been massive enough to be booted except more recently and as steve plumb says even the recent ones are legit from aj himself. still not heard anything conclusive dave
Reforee Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 With ref to the labels Chalky has posted the first one is the original, the third one(purple) came to light late 80,s . The 2nd label picture was got by me (Dave Halsall) direct off AJ Brown himself. He was singing in our hotel while in Jamaica. I spent about 6 hours with him after his set into the early hours and when I mentioned the track to him he remembered it but did not use it in his set. AJ was also unaware of the purple press or indeed how popular it was. He actually went to his room and got his laptop to research it at the time and was really amazed and quite proud while somewhat taken aback. He holds the masters which is unusual apparently for artists and offered to reprint some if I wanted any. So considering what the purple release was fetching I thought it might be worth a punt. There are obvious differences in the 2 blue labels so there should be no confusion. Plummy said he'd like to sell some so that's the full story really. Footnote. AJ can still sing and is a wonderful man to talk to. Very business like, very warming and a totally committed to his music. 1
Steve Plumb Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Over a year to reply Dave :D but thanks for confirming things for us Just PM'd ya by the way Cheers Steve
Dave Pinch Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 but there is a fourth label design also ....see below https://www.popsike.com/GET-UP-CHANT-AJ-BROWN-MAESTRO-7in-LISTEN/200067841888.html and some copies came in a picture sleeve https://www.popsike.com/A-J-Brown-Get-Up-Chant-Killer-digi-MAESTRO-MUSIC-PICTURE-SLEEVE-Listen/180835724451.html i think aj issued this 3 times in the 80`s and then again mid 2k when dave met him... of the 3 eighties issues the 1st issue is the commonest with the one i posted above is rarest
Steve Plumb Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Well would you believe it! What a coincidence, I opened my vinyl deliveries today and guess what popped out? Yep, an original (like the first one in chalky's scan above in post #3) It's staying at Plumb Towers so I now have a late 80's Purple Text with Jamaican address for sale (like the third one in chalky's scan above in post #3) Anyone fancy it please drop me a PM (It's in great nick) Cheers Steve
