Interesting thread peeps.

I'm gonna get slagged for this but I don't like that 'The Harvey Averne Dozen - Never Learned To Dance' Normally gets played a couple of times a night at the moment and fills the floor but don't like the lyrics "Never learned to dance, grooving with romance" What??? It comes across as a really cheesy song to me. Every bodies got certain records the majority like but you don't and you can't seem to understand it but there you go this is one of mine, don't shoot me i'm sorry (and a young un still learning)

it,s actually........

"never learned to dance....in my underparnts"

Anything to do with the commercialisation of our scene

Including : Anything produced /written by Ian "Molten Mix" Levine as he used to call himself

Barbara Pennington

Evelin Thomas

L J Johnson

anything 12"

Any other manufactured soul records aimed at the unknowing of the time

Betty Baker and the Jaxi's ,Wigan's Ovation, (I'll let Tommy Hunt off) Just this once ! suddenly discovered instrumentals to popular vocals , suddenly discovered vocals to major instrumentals etc Just about everything that would make someone a profit and Devalue our music

i also hate all these look-a-like bootlegs that infest E-Bay which i have complained about many times but E-Bay like the revenue too much

sorry about the rant !

F£ck me, what was that,, No person could tell me they have heard that record played out, no way never..... No person could defend this????

Close the thread now, we have winner for sure...

I think my boy John Manship went to the time & trouble to load that turd on YouTube together with a scan etc. Some effort for this utterly foul turd!

Flipside is of course much much better, it could be a different group. But this Hermans Hermits effort ....

Phew ... I've just trawled thru the whole thread and unless I'm mistaken ...

Nobody's mentioned Lorraine feckin Silver :0(

Marks out of ten ...I'd give her one ;0)

And one that I've thankfully only ever had the misfortune to hear once in the last 30+ yrs..

Bells Delana ....did I actually see people dance to that at Wigan ???

Lorraine Silver - absolutely brilliant UK girl pop dancer.

IF ever you get chance to re-listen, Barbara Pennington's song 24 Hours A Day is absolutely superb, was back then, sounds even better now.

Does "Marchin - The Camp" qualify cause thankfully I ain't heard it played out for 30 years

Bought Village of tears in 1978 for 24 quid what a waist of money thought i liked it,,,,but for me its got to be Gone with the wind Rita and the bloody Tiaras

Village of tears, one of the biggest tunes at Warrington all niters mid 80s, we all loved it...

That love has faded into the mist with time :D .... Can't remember the last time i heard it, maybe not in the last 20 years, does it still get some plays anyone????

Yes and somebody posted about that f"cking frog tune :shhh: , another that needs melting down....

Too many to mention. Start with 90 percent of Russ Winstanley's playlist circa 76 to 81. Sue Lynne, Pallbearers, Helen Shapiro, Peggy March the list goes on and on.

It was manufactured /written by Levine for the purpose of making money as were most of the others i mentioned . You could say Billy Ocean would tick all the boxes for northern soul at that time and it was not manufactured for the scene

It came from a time when certain people were exploiting the scene for what they could get out of it

i saw Barbara Pennington live at the Casino back in the day also Evelyn Thomas and L J Johnson .They were typical mime artists I think Evelyn even managed to get on top of the pops. This stuff might sound alright to you but it was the reason me and many many more left the scene. The true northern was being replaced by manufactured music and anything original and new would be hammered to death , bootlegged and on sale at russ's record hut up stairs within two weeks it was a terrible time which almost killed of northern completely ! IMHO

Can I just say that the original version of Man OF Value by the Del Royals is a masterpiece. Don't like the Tyrone Barkley version.

Four records from exactly the same period which always make me feel as if I'm coming down, badly...

sue lynne - don't pity me

wakefield sun - trypt on love

john leach - put that woman down

harley hatcher - soul hustler

always reminds me of bad Wigan nights for some reason

Which is the exact opposite to me.... (with the exception of Wakefield Sun) I loved those tunes, and still do!

Now, show me a copy of The Halos "Come Softly To Me" and I'd quite happily smash it into a million pieces! - Just before moving on to any available copies of "Dust my broom"

One that i cannot stand The Snake -Al wilson, reason, you always get some joker who maybe only went to one northern venue in the seventies in his life ,and now always requests it to be played as its most likely the only one he knows. Then goes on to regale you of all his past experiences.

I play The Wakefield Suns version of "Get Out" as a compromise.Good record without the slow intro.
