Which Northern Track You Dislike The Most

Recommended Posts

Bobby Goldsboro......"It's Too Late"  :g: ........ how the hell that is classed as soul music I'll never know. Tunes like this one was probably one of the reasons I didn't last long at Wigan. Thankfully, there was some excellent classics came out of the Casino but there sure as hell was some utter cr*p as well.....just my own humble opinion here

Don't think it's ever been classed as soul music.  Northern Soul, yes.  And it is.

Some good pop records played as NS though, not saying that one is great but Tell Her, More Today Than yesterday etc

Think that's the problem I have with these sort of tunes if I'm being honest......can't get my head round pop music being classed as any genre of soul music. But that's just my own personal take on it.....probably an age thing (and I'm mighty bl**dy old !! haha  :P

As per usual - it`s "lets knock the Casino",

Don't be silly sir cumference........just because some of the music wasn't to my taste doesn't mean to say that it wasn't a crackin' venue. There is no doubt whatsoever that some wonderful classics came from the Casino. Just think it's an age thing.....I started off late 60's on the soul scene so my "tastes" tend to be a little bit different to the younger ones who started going to the Casino around mid 70's.

I've just put some records on Ebay. Interestingly, "It's Too Late" seems to getting more hits than other soul tracks. Not mad on in myself, but it did end up in my collection!

Each to his own.

Someone said they didn't like Ike & Tina's "Dust My Broom" - which I find unfathomable.

"Hey Sal E No", or whatever it is called, is my pet hate

"No, no, no no no no no.........is that REALLY a lyric? Did someone get paid for that?? :hatsoff2:

My turn.... Never ever in my life did i expect criticism of Lester Tipton  This tune is the ultimate Northern Soul record, at the top of the tree!

It is a perfect example of describing what Northern Soul is to outsiders. It has been quoted as being poorly produced, well what would you

expect in a back street garage of a studio? Carry on you lot with your descriptions of the below standard rubbish mostly described on here

BUT LEAVE THIS MASTERPIECE OUT OF IT

You can't say it's messy because of where it was produced, the magnificent "How" by The Masqueraders originates from the same place and is sublime, but Tipton and Al Williams only got their status because of their rarity, not because they're particularly good.  IN MY OPINION Mr. Labeat, IN MY OPINION.  I'm sure you dislike half of my favourites, I won't get upset.

And I hate them both! :)

As a mark of respect i say the towns of Leicester & Tipton should be twinned to honour this great man for giving us "This wont change"

P.S, I am not a devout Detroit lover (only 90% ) i would appreciate quality soul from Timbuktu

If you've ever been to Tipton you'd change your mind.

Then again, Leicester....

Hang on a minute, who said it was messy? You are talking pathetic about STATUS & RARITY.... and not particularly good.... Go see a shrink!

I wont get into a squabble of your choice of tunes but i will defend LT till the cows come home

F*ck this I'm off for an early night, you can't have a simple conversation with some...

No, but you'll be back on here first thing tomorrow trying to correct everybody with your self opinionated smug mister know-all posts.

I asked the man what he expected, i am saying "I DID NOT SAY IT WAS MESSY"

Thanks - I figured some guys here must see it my way.  :)

Well, Tipton absolutely CANNOT SING, can he ? Probably someone destroyed most of the copies because it came out so shitty - hence the damn rarity :g:

When has it been needed to sing correctly on a NS record.?

Frailty, hitting off notes, not so perfect production, one take production techniques - these are the things that capture in 2.30 secs what others strive all their life to find in music.Lester Tipton,a masterclass in what is NS.

Next you'll be saying Gwen Owens hit some bum notes on "Wanted and needed." :glare:

I said it was messy, you said what do you expect, it was recorded in some back street studio, and I said so was The Masqueraders.

That was the conversation.

If you don't like my posts don't read them.  I don't come on here to be insulted, I go elsewhere for that..

Your post 577, your first word.... "YOU" ? Are you referring to me or not? Is there a reason why people insult you elsewhere, have you been getting

other peoples backs up?

No, 'you' as in 'everybody' or 'someone', not you as in you yourself.

"I go elsewhere for that" - was a joke.

Well that just goes to show that you cannot expect everybody to interpret your wordings the way you mean. Let "US" keep things simple!!!

I have to name it now though it surely will get me in trouble:

Lester Tipton "This won't change" - No voice (listen closely !), no melody, cheap production, plain terrible. Rare'n'Boring.

Why the heck is this record so extremely overpriced ?? Sorry... :hatsoff2:

You are 1,000,000 % right about 1 thing.... getting in trouble :wicked: All the poor tunes commented on this thread and you put a GEM amongst them... GRrrrrr

Dear Mrs Tipton.

I can only apologize for the dis-respect shown towards your son Lester and his recording of "This wont Change".

It must tear you apart reading these horrible comments and i share your grief, honestly, you had me in tears

when you phoned me. Thankfully, most/majority of SS members have a compassionate love of TWT, because,

after all, it is a Super Super tune, in the hall of fame... and "THIS WON'T CHANGE"

Best wishes

WOW.

"This won't change" by Lester Tipton still remains a mediocre record for me.

The sloppy production is arguably my weakest argument here, I give you that. :hatsoff2:

But I stand by my opinion that his voice is really (a little too) weak (remember Pete S. told me / us that Tipton was not a professional singer) and the melody is virtually nonexistent.

It is a timid attempt to make a good soul record or even a hit. It shouldn't cost 1000s because as a piece of musical art it just isn't worth that much. NO.

Anyway what's the use of this thread if it deteriorates into puttin other people's opinions down ?! Why is it not "allowed" to dislike holy grails ? :shhh:

Say what you want Heisenberg, there's no single school of thought on here. You're also not the only one who was underwhelmed by the record when they first heard it, 30 odd years ago or last week. It was also idiotic of the guy to single out your nationality, but there you go...

Thanks Macca, but I'm fine.

If LaBeat meant he doesn't like us "german blokes" - which I wouldn't imply him per se - we have something in common 'cause I don't like a lot of them either :)

Was just being slightly pissed - a moment of weakness - that some fellas don't want to understand that it's not the point of an interesting thread like this to defend records that are being named here as someone's least favorite "till the cows come home"
