Yes buts theirs also the bad ones as well - Police story - Joe 90 and a couple I can remeber.

Anyone heard the instro version of Remembering the times by Parish - I think thats very good.

And of course the fantastic - Stronger than her love -Sidney barnes Orch

Obviously I loved the Mirwood strings when I was young and Temptation walk is still one of my favs!

Parrish..yes i've a WD..how about the inst 'for guys who like it' Falstaffers/Steve Karmen

"The Flick" not easy as a DEMO.

6 by 6 DEMO is even harder to find.

I have Two Flicks and a 6x6 LoL

PS Did you ever find out what The Flick (Alternative version) is ?

Sam Butera version of Rat Race is a cracker.

Earl Van Dyke - suprised Soul Stomp hasn't been mentioned, plus of course 'Can't Get Over Losing Your Love' by the Audio Arts Strings, and the fabulous 'Let's Have a Love In' by the Wingate Strings.

Harlem Train by Dick Leslie is one I wish I hadn't flogged - I notice True Patron of the Arts seems to be popping up at the mo - paid about 4p for my demo.

Used to have the dodgy Sweet Talking Guy inst from Wigan on EMI - quite like it in a sicko sort of way - also the daft, but compelling pop crap 'Dizzy' by Lester Lanin (course since Duraphet M became a distant memory it doesn't sound mid tempo any more)

Still have shed loads of instrumental coz I was collecting them in the days when they were seriously out of fashion (late 80s) and mondo cheapo - except of course it meant you got the piss taken out of you big style (even though I flogged the pricier ones like Frank Foster and the like a few years ago - ironically it's left me with the best stuff IMO).

Buy 'Can't Get Over Losing Your Love' by the Audio Arts Strings, and the fabulous 'Let's Have a Love In' by the Wingate Strings - both cheap as it gets and the best of the lot.

If you like Jnr Walker check out "Al Serafini Orchestra - Hey, Soul Man / Lil Rosey" on Audio Fidelity (AF-174). Nb. Stock copies credited to Al Serafini's Sir Alberts. 2 great sax instrumentals imho. Both co written by Lou Ragland and apparently destined to be used as backing tracks for Lou.

Some info can be found in the Soulful Detroit archives - https://faac.us/adf/m...html?1239074117

and also in this Lou Ragland interview - https://www.soulfulki....net/inter3.htm

Currently you can find the odd copy easily as it seems to be a sleeper.....you can pick it up pretty cheap.

Me and Karl used to play a fair few instrumentals when I ran Burnley. They have to be good though, the old type with big string productions just sound so out of date now. They aren't easy to sell though, I've been trying in sales but with no takers.

I must say though the atmosphere in the room when Karl played Gentleman June Gardner followed by Bo Jr. was amazing, still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I hear them. The place was proper rocking.

I like the look of that Freddie McCoy........Only got the issue myself......Ive never seen a demo. Are they rare? An acquired taste is Soul Yogi. Reminds me of Samanthas circa 75 ish. John Vincent play. Took me quite a time to obtain one. Finally nail it in the Casino record bar. The guy had never heard of it. It was the only place to get sounds was that Casino record bar. I can smell the place now. Brilliant. Be a good idea for a thread. " your greatest finds/purchases in the Casino record bar" There must be loads of stories, good or bad.

...i

i knew of soul yogi by title only..never found a copy..and was a regular @ Sams..so i must know it..any chance of posting a short clip?

anyone remember..'Shing-a-ling' Ve-shelles early Wigan spin? or 'Tears of a clown'- Gabrelli brass?

I had an LP around 73.....I have no idea what it was called or anything about it (must be all those additives I was taking :excl: ) except that it had a brilliant instrumental of Tears of a Clown, almost note for note the backing track.

I think I still have one. It is a pinky, purpley patterned cover and it's called The Detroit Sound. Cheepo type Music For Pleasure type thing. Tears of a clown was played off this.

I'm sure Soul Yogi was a Burnley sound in 74 played by Ginger(Taylor) & Eddie(Antemes). I first heard it at the Rose Room Alldayers.

I think that's a complete error on the label to be honest bcause the real After The Session is just some guys talking over the backing track of Betty Lavette's "Only your love can save me", a complete waste of vinyl. The instrumental version of What Shall I Do labelled as After The Session is obviously called something else.

..ive always been confused by this..is/was there ever another inst version called 'after the session' (obviously not the chat/talking track mentioned above)..

Have a publication by Dave Mcadden, from years ago,in which he takes the rise out of the Casino by informing us that RW had a faulty set of decks, which removed all the vocals from anything that was played.

Absolutely hilarious and spot f**kin` on!

The instrumentals came thick and fast in them days!

I'm into intense soul vocals (deep style stuff; Lorraine Ellison, Linda Jones, Knight Bros, Garnet Mimms, etc.)

.... but I still like me a bit of an instro track .... two that spring to mind .....

a 60's UK club play ....... Bobby Moore -- Hey, Mr. D.J.

and 1 I don't recall ever getting plays: the O'Kaysions -- Soul Clap

(.... 2nd one was LP only I believe but I have it on a 7" jukebox album)

(don't know how the O'Kaysions ended up with the track as it's a Johnny Pate song)

Mick Cook(rip) playing Earl Wright 'Thumb a Ride' at same venue boooooom. All of the above is true, extra backing tracks cut at Lou's "I Travel Alone" session which he never 'got back to' to add his vocals. The 45 was 'put out' a while later as instro tracks without his knowledge !!!

......... INFO ON Al Serafini .........

Al Serafini Orch - The Cleveland / Satin Doll (Pama - NOT SOUL)

Al Serafini Orch - I Wish You Love / Blues In The Night (Pama - NOT SOUL)

Al Serafini Orch + Sir Alberts - Hey, Soul Man / Lil Rosey (Audio Fidelity)

Al Serafini Orch + Sir Alberts - Earthquake / Seven Steps To Freedom (A & R)

By the 1960s, the big band era had all but ended, but a few live band broadcasts continued. Cleveland based saxophonist Al Serafini still ran a band & they made live national radio broadcasts from both the Sahara Hotel on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland and the Steel Pier in Atlantic City. But the cost of maintaining such an ensemble soon led to its demise, apart from the odd occasion when a big show was in town.

Al went on to become the musical director for the 'Upbeat' TV show that went out from a Cleveland TV studio in the mid to late 60's.

I will have to ask Lou if Al was actually on that session (when he cut "I Travel Alone", etc) or if Al's name was just put on that 45 coz he was so well known on the Cleveland music scene.

so its a mispress?..has it the same issue number, matrix..in short can you identify it by sight or only upon playing?

Am I missing something here Pete. Are you talking about The Subway Riders "After The Session" as you say on Moonshot. If so, I'm sure it's not a mispress. It's a legit instrumental of Moonlight Music & You... or have I completely misread the previous posts :g:

I contacted Lou & he has given me the full story about the Al Serafini 45.

I have started a new thread all about it & the "I Travel Alone" recording session; didn't want the tale to just get buried in the middle of this long 'instrumental' thread.

Not soul related but, seeing as this discog already includes other non soul 45's, for info you can add to the list -

Al Serafini Orch - Chippewa Klak / Lee Rand - The Klak-Stik Kick (KLKSTK ?) 45 From the title I'm guessing deffo NOT soul :)

Al Serafini - Who Can I Turn To /Blues In The Night(Rozan) 45 The Anthony Newley tune backed with the Arlen/Mercer composition.

Al Serafini Orch - Requestfully For You (Pama) LP listed as big band jazz

Al Serafini His Electronic Sax & Orchestra - Sir Albert (Audio Fidelity) LP........A mixture of styles, big band jazz/easy listening & soul-"ish" instrumentals,

the 2 on the Audio Fidelity 45 are the standouts. Possibly the title track "Sir Albert" and "For Your Love" might also suit some tastes.

Al Serafini must have been Cleveland's equivalent to Googie Rene (LA based).

Many of Googie Rene's late 50's / early 60's tracks are big band jazz & MOR cuts but then there is the stuff like "Smokey Joe's La La" that got UK mod club dance floors heaving !!

I bought one last year off ebay purely visually as it had the New York address mentioned in JM's guide. It was the "good one" when it arrived.

Not my copy but you can see the address on the label scan in this vid -
