Guest lambrettanik Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 i wouldnt take it too heart mate.who ever said this to you is in the minority(and probadly a "born again" soulie).welcome to the scene, its needs youth.talkin of which iam 46 and still dont think iam old or look it ! and yep still can dance as i did when i was your age.i actually dont like going to oldies nights where the clientele is predominately "old",and i find allnighters are the best places to avoid attitudes and narrow veiws,oh and fetch your mates
Iancsloft Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 To Soul Sam we are all youngsters me included im 57 1
Dazdakin Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Started going nighters very young myself (2mths short of being 14!!) so thats 30+ yrs and to be honest with you friend all i can say and wish for is that you know of another 1000 or so young souls like yourself to keep this scene, we all love, going. Keep coming!! bring a mate or two, eventually one will be hooked and he/or her will bring a couple and hey presto!! we have a revival on our hands!!
Citizen P Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Beware these actions could seriously back fire Nah, he'd be OK. 21 FFS none of us could f*ckin' catch him !!! T
MELS Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Twisted wheel last night (26th august) four younger people came ip from london 3 girls 1 guy They looked really smart and alll of them were good dancers they were made to feel welcome by us crinklies think and hope that they had a really good time said that they hope to come to the next Sunday session would love some feedback from them on here So like I said in an earlier reply ignore the stupid bigots who basically think that you have to have been into the soul scene for 45 years keep going to soul nights cos without you younger guys the scene will wither and die! Spike (52 year old and feeling it this morning ) Despite the grey hair, I was just too young to go to Wigan. I came to Northern Soul late and it has been a wonderful voyage of discovery. Personally, I have found most people to be great and happy to share knowledge about the music, although in the past, I have had a couple of dismissive comments from obviously self-appointed, superior authentic soulies due to my lack of pedigree or experience. I still get the rush when I hear a great 'new' sound. Do they? Just enjoy the music with the majority and pity the bigots in the minority - they lack soul 1
Guest miss nancy Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 I suppose they are a necessary evil ... with their unwrinkled skin and lithe slim and athletic bodies
Guest Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 I suppose they are a necessary evil ... with their unwrinkled skin and lithe slim and athletic bodies And lack of facial hair
spike1 Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Lack of facial hair ? As opposed to lack of any hair???? ;) And that hair we have is tinged with cemetry blossom !! (that's the grey bits) or silver highlights we could call them:)
Guest garysoul82 Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Ok so I have been going to all-nighters and soul do's for a few years now and I just wanted to see what people think of younger people on the scene? I am 21 years old and have been into it for about 3 or so years now. I started of going with a mate the same age as me but he moved away so i go with people much older. I will be honest and admit i do somtimes have people look at me strange and I have had people ask me "should you not be in bed" "does ur mummy know your out etc." This is not everyone just a small few. Do people think it is strange someone so young is into northern soul with all older people? Have people forgot they were young when they were into it? How can we get more youngester in the scene?
Guest garysoul82 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Age has nothing to do with it.Forget the old foggies on the scene.Listen, dance, collect what you can afford, but most of all ENJOY YOURSELF.
Guest Beeks Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 And lack of facial hair Feck all wrong with facial hair! ;)
Raym Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 (edited) Hi Liam, you've always been welcome (open arms infact) down at 'Caliente' (and 'City Club' before that) in Peterborough! Russ and I always keen and have put in some effort to get a few more younger ones in and give a couple up and coming DJ's a chance (likes of 'Young Brett' and Jamie for example) play some tunes when at some other venues its a closed shop/no chance. Its also good as it lowers the average age in the room from about 48 down to about 31 when you and your mates get in at 'Caliente'!! Cheers, Ray Edited September 13, 2011 by Raym 2
Podge Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 (edited) The reason you go is for the music right ?, the same reason we all go or are still involved, I am 53, been into it since I was 16. Now if young blood wants to come onto the scene and enjoy it as much as I have then all well and good, try it, if you like it you will stick with it. Don't get knocked by the knockers on the scene, do what you want to do, if you want to sit in a corner and listen and not dance then do so, if you want to collect then do so, get out of the scene what you want, there are more good genuine people on the scene than the other way round. Young or old............... it's what's in the groove that counts, lets not forget it eh Edited September 15, 2011 by NickH
Anais nin Carms Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 (edited) Hi Liam I think it's great to see younger people at soul do's , you are people that will take it forward when most of us are dead and gone . This may be helpful for you to know , try to travel to Europe if you can where there appears to be a much younger crowd at the do's that are held in Italy , Spain and Germany for example. When I lived in Colchester Ady C and Donna had a do going at the arts centre , it was lovely to see more young people than old , they did not have any hang ups about oldies and newies and loved the sounds played. Same vibe was had at Liams do at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester , so there are other do's where you might find more youngsters attend . I think living in a city or town where there are students is an added bonus because I think they tend to want to explore music more? Lots of the crowd in Coly were either students, or the threatre staff that backed onto the venue. Having said that please carry on going to do's here and ignore anyone that makes childish remarks . Me being old , I depend on the likes of you to give me a seat lol Enjoy Edited September 15, 2011 by Carms 1

Geeselad Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 The thing that pleased me most about the first change was the amount of younger punters it had attracted, if for nothing else I considered it a sucsess for that reason alone. 1
Steve G Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Give 'em some cocky young lip back, He does this about the football teams we support
Guest ang b Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I also think it's great to see younger faces on the scene, i never thought it was an issue, wer'e all there for the same reason, the love of the music & dancing, i never notice anyone's age, my daughter's 30 & since she was 16 she loved doing a few niters & prestatyn weekender most years, f**k em i say who are they to comment anyway
Simsy Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 You may not have a great taste in football teams, ( ) but you've got a great taste in music Liam! Don't ever lose it - 'keep the faith' as the (now long in the tooth - but fook it) saying goes. In the early 90's some of my mates began to peel away and listen to Indie music - not me baby! If I just had Roy Hamilton & Garland Green records to listen to every day, that'd do me. Great thing about our scene is all are welcome, regardless of age, gender or race. It's probably the way Roy Hamilton (or similar) makes them feel, that is why they're there in the first place 1
Guest MrC Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 My eldest daughter is 27 this year, and has come to soul nights and a few nighters with me since she was about 15. She loves the music, and has even started to buy her own records!! Her boyfriend is 30 and a proper indie/old skool fan, but after getting dragged along to Harpo & Sandi's wedding is now also a fan! They may not be "youngsters" in the accepted term, and they do get looked up & down a bit at some places, as they can look a bit out of place at some events, Luckily, we know enough people for them to feel welcome wherever we go, and they tend not to notice, or even care! Liam, you have great taste in music, and that's all that matters to the most of us! don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise!
Spacehopper Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 i think people in the 20s are the best we can expect...there will be a few younger (probably who grew up with soulie/scooterist parents) and respect to them for not being swept along with all the bullshit media/music most teenagers are..
Gene-r Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 (edited) Each and every one of us were young and starting out on the scene at some point in our lives. The more younger people getting in to the scene, all the better - bring it on! After all, they're gonna keep the flag flying long after our backs have given way and when our memories can't remember what happened five minutes ago! Edited September 21, 2011 by Gene-R

Guest FYSoul Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 I'm 20 and big into the music, don't get to any do's mind but I probably will in the future. Started to buy records now also. People my age need to know about this music, they don't know what they're missing, and with modern music being in the state it currently is, who's to say more young people won't get into the scene? 1
Spacehopper Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 (edited) get yourself to some dos mate, nuffin like hearing this music LOUD and being on a dancefloor full of likeminded people, you'll love it so much choice to find your thing and im sure theres a few near by..soul night or nighter,as weller said of the casino 'cos when you're dancin all night long,it gives you the feelin that you belong!' dean Edited September 26, 2011 by spacehopper

Anais nin Carms Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Where are you from Mario ? I recall having a great night in Barcellona at the Boiler club I think it was called . Went there on the off chance as I was staying in the Bay of Roses with Perditta . We found the majority to be under 35 and it was fab ! They danced to everything and a good time was had by all.
Guest MARIO MANJARREZ Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 I'm from Mexico, I heard about great soul nights in Barcelona, also know about some soul clubs (increasing) there in Spain. We need something of that here, hehe.

Well you should definitely just dive in and get yourself along to some soul nights, its all about meeting like-minded people (if not like-aged) lol. Where in the country do you live? Just take a look at some upcoming events where you live and just go to one or two. Its great to see interest from younger people if only to keep the floor filled while we older dudes take a breather.

Just check number 4 in the list of "Worst Things About The Scene". Personaly I think it's good to see younger folks at venues. Cheers Kev Bod
