spike1 Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Not really that interesting a thread, and i could care less but for me the term 'Northern Soul' now represents an oldies night, baggy trousers, circle skirts etc, etc, it just doesn't seem to represent the cutting edge anymore ( and probably hasn't for years ), i feel the more progressive nights seem to adopt the term 'Rare Soul' and have for a good many years, in a way i suppose distancing themselves from the Sainsburys checkout 'Best Northern Soul Ever Cd' mentality ( if you know what i mean..! ) As a teenager 'Northern Soul' to me was underground and cool, but it's as far removed from cool as it could ever be for me, i'm just a soul music fan, i embrace over 47 years of music, not just a narrow band of say 4 years (64-68 ?). I actually find the t-shirts, badges mildly amusing, i always hated it when people said 'Keep the Faith'..do me a favour.... Spoken like like a true cock (strangled or otherwise ) K.T.F Perhaps what its really saying is......Northern soul strangles the 'Penis of Progress'
Popular Post Pete S Posted August 18, 2011 Popular Post Posted August 18, 2011 Not really that interesting a thread, and i could care less but for me the term 'Northern Soul' now represents an oldies night, baggy trousers, circle skirts etc, etc, it just doesn't seem to represent the cutting edge anymore ( and probably hasn't for years ), It just means great music to me, it's got nothing to do with clubs, scooters, I don't go to any of them and I wear what I like, you lot are just talking about the fashion of it all and forgetting that it's some of the best music ever made. Apart from the modern soul of course. So you're ashamed of being into Northern Soul? Go elsewhere then, to that mythical place where you can hear 47 years worth of music and not Northern Soul. 4
Guest Brett F Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Actually that's my post, and its been taken out of context, without the remainder of what I wrote, I'm not ashamed of Northern Soul ? ( (don't put words down I didn't say !), and I do visit venues that play Northern Soul and also venues that draw on over 47 years of Soul music..I actually pay money by attending that support events. Im no living room soul fan.

Guest rasfoz Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 (edited) Mark, I know who you are! The comment was a bit of a tongue in cheek - we both sing from the same song sheet in a few areas..... And I know one DJ one the mod scene who'd ask for a second kick in the balls. Allegedly.... Wonder who that could be ? Speaking of comedy mods that is. Edited August 18, 2011 by rasfoz
claudster Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 well I suppose you just have to question the mentality of someone to actually go out in a tee shirt like that. We may get to see one on the Jeremy Kyle show ........... "Not on my show you wont!!!!!!!!!!" said Jeremy :-)
funkyfeet Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 (edited) I'v had a few people in the shop lately asking for the Wigan Casino's Group, when I question them further they say, you know that group who do them northern soul songs, I've given up now being suprised by people, I just sell them a cd as if I don't know any different. Guest Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 This hits the nail on the head. For me personally scooters or anything connected with them have had no bearing on the northern scene whatsoever. AGREED  Firmly in this camp. Totally agreed. 1
barney Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Firmly in this camp. Totally agreed. well I,m into both and know a lot of people who are also into both and ,may I be bold enough to say they are a bit more opene minded (the ones I know anyway) about the music than some of the more self opiniated smug fookers that come on here who profess their opinions as tho they were gospel. please remember- OPINIONS ARE LIKE *RSEHOLES , EVERYBODIES GOT ONE 1
Ian Stacey Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 stopped going to scooter rallies in the mid eighties to many people into stray cats rocker billy stuff I have never associated the scooter scene with northern soul as rarely do you see a scooter outside an All-nighter most soulies drive cars always have done if some minority on the scooter scene feels this way leave them to it saves me playing tune up or Muriel day or the snake

Pete S Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Blimey where was this thread resurrected from and why was I so snappy, I bet I'd stopped taking the prozac at that time 3
Davenpete Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 (edited) Remember Paul Philips telling me years ago that, whenever they had a poll in Echoes, not only were by far the highest votes for 'what would you like to see MORE of in Echoes' for Northern, but also for the 'what would you like to see LESS of in Echoes'... Funny, we don't spend our time trying to stick it to poxy reggae fans. These lot are just arseholes though - have you seen the Oi band (more hair than brains) doing Fuck Northern Soul on Youtube - these are the sort of bonehead nazi c*nts that turned me off scooters and rallies (bearing in mind I was secretary of the biggest club in the country, by a factor 2, for a good many years). Used to have loads of this type where I come from - funny they're all into Northern now that psychobilly has dissappeared up its own arse. Dx Edited February 21, 2017 by DaveNPete 2
