Anoraks Corner Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Didn't realise the wonderful book, 'Chicago Soul' by Robert Pruter is available free to read online Check it out if you've already...great stuff! https://books.google.co.jp/books?id=2kkcmS0AzMEC&pg=PA219&lpg=PA219&dq=harold+burrage+funeral&source=bl&ots=5izMyRF_Cj&sig=AnkFYymTJEwE58HlleuuRF9i1CA&hl=en&ei=WWI5TuHcH4yOmQX2yJy8Bw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CCsQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=harold%20burrage%20funeral&f=false
Harrogatesoul Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 I'm old fashioned me.. but a great online reference as you can search the book too. Wonderful piece of work. Am tempted to look at the Doo Wop book also. thanks for the link Dave - I'd have never looked for this online!
Anoraks Corner Posted August 3, 2011 Author Posted August 3, 2011 I'd have never looked for this online! Nor me, just stumbled across it whilst searching for details on Harold Burrage's funeral!
KevH Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Nor me, just stumbled across it whilst searching for details on Harold Burrage's funeral! That's my bedtime reading sorted Dave...
Robbk Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 I just went there, and I got the following message: "You have already reached your viewing limit." I have read about 50 pages of it. Therefore, I have to assume that the entire book CANNOT be read online for free. There must be a page and/or time limit per computer Internet connection (IP#). So, I suggest you read as much as possible, as quickly as possible. But, it is best to buy the book. It's a great book, that every soul fan should read, to get a better handle on what was going on in Chicago in the 1960s. I don't just say that because I want to spur on my friend's book sales.
boba Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 It's just google books. They have almost every book ever printed scanned and readable (violating copyright...). But as Robb pointed out, they won't let you read a whole book.
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 Nor me, just stumbled across it whilst searching for details on Harold Burrage's funeral! ...you've probably left it a bit late if you were thinking of attending, Dave...
Ceejay Posted August 3, 2011 Posted August 3, 2011 No matter............personally I'd buy the books!!!

But as Robb pointed out, they won't let you read a whole book. It's not copyright infringement unless they copy the whole book AFAIK. This is for "preview reference" only at a guess, similar to sound clips for CDs and the like

This is for "preview reference" only at a guess, similar to sound clips for CDs and the like So you can photocopy and give away every page of a book except one and it's legal? The law is also complicated regarding sound clips on CD and it's often also not legal. Is there a specific copyright law you're referring to that says what you are saying?
boba Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 if you care, read this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Book_Search_Settlement_Agreement
Guest ScooterNik Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 That's the one, it was the 'fair use' side of things I was aware of. I wasn't aware that it had been resolved, must have missed that one, but as I commented, it is essentially preview material.
Robbk Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 That's the one, it was the 'fair use' side of things I was aware of. I wasn't aware that it had been resolved, must have missed that one, but as I commented, it is essentially preview material. And rightly so. As an author, I am certainly in agreement that no one should be able to give my copyrighted work away for free, when I need to sell it to earn enough money to live on it.
Otis Smith Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Dave, thank you for the information, about the book on line, it was always difficult to find in its original format, how we've moved on with technology. Also the heading does say, some pages have bee omitted. I have also put reference in my favourites, and to read complete attachment, scroll upwards to page one, dead easy!( are you reading robbk).
