Looks like the "new breed" of Soul/mod fans I've seen a couple of them out and about at niters, they definately haven't had as many birthdays as most of us, and thats got to be a good thing surely.

But the stereotyping of 'the scene' (not this article, but many others) I find acutely embarrasing. For example the O'Grady show with Winstanley the other year. It always places empahsis on style over substance, when it's really all about the music If it ever was about the style maybe mid 70's, that lost it's kudos some 30 years ago. But I do wonder about what's going on in the head of the odd stomping muppet in Spencer soul bags stuck in a time warp. It's 2011 let's just move on please.

We know FULL well that everytime anything to do with Northern Soul is shown or written about in the media Frank Wilson ALWAYS is played and they ALWAYS say about Wigan etc.... It aint gonna change is it? Maybe, just maybe people will read an article and decide to go along to a night and get the bug as we have. Rob Glover runs The Yum Yum in Northampton and not sure if its still running but Brighton Beach in Leicester also. Now these two events aqre extremely well attended by numbers many venues could wish for. The vast majority of the attendees are between 18 to 35 years old. Some go in classic Mod wear etc.... They listen to a varying array of 60's style music be it hammond, Soul, Motown, Northern etc...... But just supposing a dj guested for them who was out and out Northern and the crowd enjoyed it and decided to look about for a strictly Northern Soul event. They then went on Soul Source to find somewhere and decided to look at some of the threads. The attitude towards them on this site from certain parties would certainly turn them against it as they would feel stigmatised and possibly would feel that they wouldnt want to attend so would to continue attend events like above and never go to a Northern Night to experience that aspect of the Soul music genre. So what if the media potrays The Northern Soul scene in the way it does, when I read the articles or see rediculous interviewers trying to dance to Frank Wilson while someone in baggies and a wide skirt shows them how to dance. Which the interviewer will never understand unless they shut their eyes and let the tune take you rather than attempting ( badly) to mirror someones foot movements. IF anything in the media gives someone a push to go along to an event and see for themselves what its about or just how the music makes you feel then BRILLIANT. Let the Scene be stereotyped in the media so what, once they've read it and ventured into a venue and hear the music and feel the atmosphere they will learn for themselves that its a WHOLE DAMN site better than what they've read. We cannot afford to alienate these younger 60's enthusiasts etc... We need them to further the Northern soul scene and they will, because they already love the music its the attitude towards them that puts them off. I'll get my helmet from the loft, I think its still got scrim on it, the art of camouflage.

Things will move on inevitably but the main thing is the music and if they start off with the obvious FW etc. and enjoy them that may encourage them to look for other tunes, then hopefully bring some new blood onto the scene. Guest lambrettanik Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 nice photo's chalky! you kinda prove my point in another thread-that the retro thing looks better when done by the youth,but i do know of some middle age mod,skin,suede head,rockabilly/punk etc who have always dressed in their favourite style/culture and can carry it off as they tend to tone it down but these are few and far between,some of the people you've captured elequentley were at stoke the other week they added a much needed injection of style and youth-nice one

Now the easy thing to say is either "I don't like them" or "I like them" but if you do the former you're then told that you are negative, backward looking, unencouraging and so on. They are photos, not the holy grail or the meaning of life. If people don't like them, they don't like them, just editing this bit here, why's there always a need to try to change peoples opinions? They are good photos though.

I think the the title of 'Northern Soul In Pictures' is fair enough and the pictures are credible and interesting. However a broader NS in pictures would include not only fashion conscious youngsters, but also chaps in their late 50's, maybe they'd be heavy set, maybe they'd be a bit follicle shy, but they would be real and in greater number perhaps than the zoot suiters.. Just about a realistic portrait of Northern Soul In Pictures maybe ..
