I must admit i've never been one for price guides, probably due to the fact that i sell mainly on ebay, with a 99p kick off price & no reserve. I tend to deal along the lines where by if i sell a record, let's say on ebay, & it makes fifty quid, that's the value on that day at that minute. So if i was to look in a guide & it say's the value of that particular record is forty or sixty quid, how does that help me?

So, when i was given a present this morning, namely one Manship U.K. price guide, my initial responce was  . But after it sat on the corner of my desk for an hour or so i started to flick through the pages. Well i must say, i'm impressed, it's actually very interesting. There's loads of info on how the different labels came to be, lots of pictures of the 45's plus e.p.'s, full price listing, 'A' sides, 'B' sides, different label configurations, etc. etc.

Credit where it's due, this is a good book

Agreed about the quality of the book, excellent info, invaluable for any British collector. Unfortunately I sold most of my best British 12 years ago and checking the values of what I once owned was a bit gutting to say the least ! I believe Tim Brown also has a British guide coming out soon, will be interesting to compare.

Hello Alan,

I know where your coming from on the gutted front, get a load of this. I had SEVEN copies of Timi Yuro, "It'll never..." in my U.K. collection. I held onto them as i knew one day it would take off. When it hit the £200 mark i thought it couldn't go any higher, surely. So i unloaded them. I wont say where, because the 2 people that had them look on here. Only problem was, i thought i'd kept one for my self, but got confused & let it go

All due respect to Tim, but i honestly dont know how a dealer in U.S. records can be an authority on U.K., do you?? Manship's been handling the stuff for donkeys. I used to love it when Tim would sell U.K, as i would get some brilliant bargains, so i'm in no way knocking the guy. Like you say, it will be interesting.

Regards,

Talking of price guides just what is copyrighted? I have read the copyright in Tims guide and I am no wiser. Surley I cant be sued for giving a value for a record I own and is in the public domain (ie on this site). Its only a matter of time before someone combines both price guides, alters the prices slightly and has an online price guide. It seems odd that in this day of internet everything that this information is only available in a very expensive book (£29.99).

When an online version appears (and it will) prices could be updated instantly, discoveries added and indemand titles revalued. Of course there would be a subscription but it must be cheaper than buying a new price guide every couple of years.

Is there a non existant title in these books to catch anyone thinking of doing this out I wonder!

Interesting point I think JM foresaw this prob. As he made subtle "mistakes" ie label # slightly diff. title etc. And caught TB & MK out with Lou Price on Suemi "Love Is Fading" as they copied it straight from JM guide. I also noted on a previous auction JMs comments on the Ral Donner info on Sunlight where obviously TB or MK had been plagarising and got it all wrong and ended up with TWINIGHT as the label and released on GREEN VINYL. I do note that in TB's guide he did acknowledge JM. So perhaps it's OK to copy if you say "thanks" but you gotta copy carefully cause JM does delight in making certain people look a p***K.

I've just bought MANSHIP's UK 45 guide and it's damn interesting and super-informative and surprisingly constantly contradicts "Record Collectors" listings ie Year and even the label and number. Tim, at least you now have something to copy from now :P .. I agree with Potsy I don't see how a dealer who only rarely sells British 45s can bring out a guide, he certainly sells USA 45s and how inaccurate is that guide for prices.. Books I can't get enough of them.. :D

And talking of errors replicated from one book to another, there's "You're My Everything" (sic) by Sandy Golden on Masterpiece. Amazing just how many other sources quote it as this.

Of course, those in the know will realise that the correct title is "Your Love Is Everything"..........according to various accounts/reviews of it, 'not many people know that'!!

HOLD ON. Several years ago Kev Roberts asked me to do the UK prices for a book that Goldmine were bringing out. Maybe 3 years ago Tim said they were intending on doing it. May I point out here that I was paid something like £150 for doing over 6 months research, label listings, prices etc and no other fees. If this book of Tim's comes out and they've used my work, which they do not have copyright on, I will seek legal advice. If it doesn't contain my work, then I'm not f*cking bothered.

I hope you put something like a deliberate mistake in Pete, so your work can be identified.

Bout time you did a reggae price guide mate, that record collector one is a joke.

How much is that @ hourly rate?? But I tell you whsat it must have took JM years with that guide the information is mind bogglin'.. does that guy only work??

Point on copyright you can't just copy other peoples research they have "interlectual rights" to it. Like TB & MK would have to prove where they got info from if JM got funny about them blatantly duplicating some of his work.

The interesting thing is on the Lou Pride with Man's Man's world flipside they price it less than JM although they have never had a copy for sale.... all very strange but transparently tactical.. surely a record you've never had for sale should be afforded the respect of the value someone has sold it at? Or am i wrong?

Pete check the TB UK guide when it comes out, but I think JM may have more cuase for seeing a solicitor than you..or maybe you can share.

There would certainly be a good case to present in respect of plagiarism but that is fairly difficult to prove  As far as intellectual rights are concerned, that would be fairly hard to prove being that the value of a record is not intellectual property and you do not own it. Any new book would have to be proven to be plagiarised and the resulting law suit would be a lengthy and drawn out, not to mention expensive, expodition. The solicitors win every time.

Don't publishing houses have to make assurities as to the genuineness of new material before going to print? They might then be in the firing line for copywrite infringement otherwise.

Doesn't plagiarism only apply to published works ?.

And PeteS has received payment, albeit derisory based on what he has said, for that work. You should hve got a written contract Pete. Kev and Tim would have done I'm sure.

That's what we're discussing isn't it? The information has already been included in a previous book.

They only have to reference the text to avoid plagerism the laws an ass as normal.

I got a receipt from Kev for work done but that was for actually doing the groundwork, compiling the listings etc. Nobody said anything to me about what would happen should it eventually become a book.

Its a bit rich that people who have sailed VERY close to the wind regarding copyright might start using those rights if it impacts on there revenues. People living in glass houses....... BH

And what people are you referring to exactly?

Anyone who has visited the Soul Walking website that toby walker has brilliantly put together will know he was issued a writ for plagerism for refering to the death of marvin gaye

he has had to close down hundreds of his group and artist profiles while he cross references everything and makes sure nothing is word for word like anything else in current print.

like he said "how many different ways can you print "Marvin Gaye was shot by his father" he was still brought to task for it, so in light of that it must be pretty easy to have legal redress fo plagerism.

But then im not a lawyer.....what do I know
