Setting off at noon today and going to be there until Thursday. Any record shops worth a look?

Recommendations for eating, drinking and looking at things also welcome

Cheers :)

Hi

Mixed Up records in Otago Street, Glasgow's west End is probably the best of the few 2nd hand shops left.

Check Stravaigin round the corner for top food in Gibson Street.

From here Kilvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is 5 mins walk through park and Byres Road, good for studenty/west endy bars ,restaurants, vintage shops.

The new museum of transport has also just opened at the riverside and is getting good reviews.

There is always the city hop on/off bus departing from George Square which is probably your best bet for seeing the city in a few days.

I wouldn't hold out much hope of picking up that exclusive tune, too many people looking for the same stuff, but I am sure that you will enjoy the city, especially if the weather stays good.

Nick.

Cheers for the tips Nick.

Main thing is just to explore the city - that's why we're going. Not been before and really looking forward to it. Mrs G has a list including plenty of Charles Rennie Mackintosh stuff, Tramway etc. Although it's not a digging trip I always like to give a bit of business to indie record shops along the way if I can though.

The most obvious thing to visit is the train station, nice enough interior, although you may have to step over a few of the clientelle, and their bottle of Bucky, who I can now translate what they will be saying as "any chaenge for the puggy big man, goan yersel", then you can just step on to a train to Edinburgh and see Buddah's, or any one of his made up mates, chosen city.

Given that detailed description I can only assume the P stands for Peacock, if so how the devil are you old man, long long time no see. Hope all is good in your world. Top bloke.

And if it is you Mr P do not spoil my perfect racial stereotyping by trying to suggest I used to spend most of weekends over in Glesgae due to it being much preferable to the stuffy and posh student filled land that is Edinburg on an evening out, my lawyer would be forced to deal with any such scurrilous accusations.

We're going by train Jock so I eagerly await this fascinating cultural experience.

Oh and I would cover up your fur with a more nuetral coloured jacket, Green will get you bought a pint in some pubs, but may require a sharp exit from others, go for nice nuetral brown, always recommended when we cross over to the dark side.

Indeed it is Mr O'Conner, I am very well and follow your posts on SS with great interest.

Good to see that you are still promoting the power of the'mid tempo' monster.

I will never forget the sun streaming through the roof at Allanton, your good self on the decks and the metaphorical razor at my wrists.

On a more relevant topic, check out Amarone, brilliant Italian downstairs on corner of Buchanan Street and Nelson Mandela Square.

If sunny sit outside and people watch, as Jock says the variety of 'characters' passing will certainly give you plenty to talk about.

The record shops are a dead loss, few and far between, little of soul interest and as already said lots of people looking for the same stuff.

Lots of good eating and drinking around the city centre. I'd check out the Merchant City area in the centre.

If you're wanting to look at things the new Transport Museum, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, the Hunterian Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow (which has Mackintosh stuff) are fairly close to each other . Ashton Lane which is just next to the Uni is great for restaurants and bars. The hop-on tourist bus would be suitable for these, but it's just a short and pleasant walk from Kelvingrove to Ashton Lane through Kelvingrove Park.

Kelvingrove museum and the grounds are fantastic and the transport museum as already mentioned.

You might want to check out the Barras as well, the market stalls near the London Rd if you like reproduction goods cheap and Glasgow Green park is nearby and that's nice as well. You never know there might be some vinyl at the barras.

I'll be up there again in a few weeks. Haven't been to the barras for a few years so might pay it another visit.

The Barras are only open Saturday and Sunday. They used to be good for record hunting years ago, even though lots of people were trawling it for records, but now they are just run-down even by its standards, and few records. There is one large stall in the main area that sells albums, with a box of soul ones, but it didn't have anything worthwhile when I looked a few weeks ago.

 Or the sight of Guy Hennigan at the front of the stage pounding his fists and shouting "For God's sake Jock, UP THE TEMPO"
