Come on Steve you know like me Dealer prices are just a guidline to what a certain 45 is worth

I have always said that there are several prices a 45 is worth going by its rarity if selling

1-- A price to a friend ..2 price to someone who knows the score..3 price what someone

who really wants the 45 is willing to pay .......Finally The Barnpot price the money is no object

I will pay anything to own this 45 you have i want it i need it i,ve gotta have it and i dont

I don't automatically go "this record is worth £100 so I'll ask £100".

The men with the finance and years of doing this can do because they have financial security, it doesn't matter to them if an item sells or not, they just bring another one out.

This is a matter of - well not life and death but it's serious for me - one income in the house, baby arriving next week, and the only income is that from records so it's finely balanced, I have to make sure that the records are priced attractively enough to undercut everyone else whenever possible and are priced to sell.

When I get something that I know really is rare, I'll ask for a decent price for it - yesterday, Linda & The Pretenders at £500, I know this has sold for £800 but who's got that sort of money at the moment?

The "book" prices that are usually quoted can be and are wildly differing in values.Just one example

The Extremes in Johns £1000 in Tims £4000 !! Who is the nearest to its value?

How can Doug Banks still be £100 + "kept on........."

A record on both lists from John and from Tim this week ......1 priced at £150 same tune at £15.

Is pricing down/up to whether a dealer has had copies to sell?

It also seems that pricing of tunes happened -obviously-when "we" became collectors many years ago Rare records priced then, found in more recent times, are not as rare, but command ,in some instances,several times the original value.Inflation?

What really bugs is me is when it's a known fact that a title has been found in quantity yet amazingly the price goes UP and not down....I can name numerous examples but tghe last time I did, I was seriously legally threatened by someone.

I would say that it comes down to supply and demand. But as Pete says, this is a market that has always been manipulated.

My view on this is simple if Pete can find a copy of Jimmy Beaumont for £60 then so can I, in fact mine was less than $20 and bought in the last year. I rarely buy from dealers though I have nothing against them, it is rare that there is a sound that I must have NOW. I'm willing to wait 'til I can turn one up at a decent price. My wants list has always been longer than the list of stuff I own so waiting isn't an issue. Some I'll never get but thats life I guess.

Pete makes some very valid points and this shows why if your gonna buy off dealers he should be your first port of call.

Good reply Pete. The thing that for me sets dealers apart and allows them to set prices is accessibility to records. Even if i borrowed five grand from the bank i wouldn't have a clue who to contact or where to spend it on old 45s which i could buy cheap and sell at a profit. I could buy on ebay, but that would be no good for a dealer surely?

I suppose i could take a trip to the states, but how sure can anyone be of turning up anything decent these days? My question is how do manship and others stay supplied with 45s, is it as simple as popping over to the US every few months or getting someone there to hunt for them?

most of the dealers have ebay id , alot of stuff is purchased from the states before being listed on sales lists

alot of us sellers now have the price guides so theres not as many bargins available but theres still some stuff filed in thew wrong section or at low start prices
