Guest markoneill
Your posts reads as though you want to be a DJ and that's why you've started collecting again. At least you seem to be honest about it. Don't you like any other kind of music though? There's cheaper genres to collect if it's all about playing them out. I dont want to be nor have the time to be a DJ. I would at some point like to share the music I love with other people on odd occassions ( at no cost ) when it suits me rather than £000's of records be stuck in my office. Why would I want to collect other music when I have loved this music for 35 years? I am fast approaching 50 and probably going through the change so excuse my ignorance, my wife has some origional bay city rollers maybe i should get into that. For me it's the love of the music and nothing else matters and I cant see me changing now. Link to comment Social source share

Steve G
Weird. I could have sworn it was a single-sided 10" test-pressing. It's got the Monarch printed label on it right? Mind you, the last time I saw it was circa '78 or thereabouts......... Ian D Swear away Ian, but it's def a 12 LP size, and yes it does have Monarch on it and the titles typed out on the white cover. Incidentally I did buy off you when you sold up the first time, that little blue covered book of records, mind you couldn't afford any of the bigger titles you were selling which probably says it all....I probably still have it somewhere Steve Edited July 24, 2011 by Steve G Link to comment Social source share
Guest Bearsy
In essence Kev ,Steve,Brett ,Wayne and the rest of us on here who follow the etiquette of O.V.O ..you have to remember one thing and one thing only . We are into RARE SOUL ....the peeps who keep arguing the toss against ,are basically nostalgic "NORTHERN SOUL" followers. The people who believe Wigan Casino holds the answers to everything that was precious in their lives ... You have to remember back in the day ...most people were into a scene and not soul. Getting on a bus /car and going to a underground nighter ,getting off your t*ts and dancing like a maniac whilst most of your mates were at home fast asleep totally oblivious to it all. It was happening there and then and you were right smack in the thick of it Sadly for a lot of people ..going out to a "Northern soul " night is a way of trying to relive that past ..a way of clinging onto the memory which was probably the best times of their lives. And sadly for most of em ...they never bought a record ..probably didnt even know who sang it ,what it was called ..but as soon as you hear it ..they sure as hell know how to dance to it eh The same people who shun anything new ,for fear it will erase the memory.. So please stop banging your head against a wall ...it really will not change the fact ..we exist in the same world ,but actually are not part of the same scene anymore Some of us have moved on ..or dare i say, followed on in the tradition of how it actually was when we first got into it...embracing something new that was'nt mainstream and eagerly awaiting the dj's next big cover up . Your either into soul or your into a scene ... superb Nev Link to comment Social source share

The little blue book with a picture of a deranged person on the front and titled "Vinyl Junkies" or something. Sound familiar LOL....? Actually, that wasn't really a traditional sell-off 'cos my first sell-off was when I'd sold my big ticket stuff in '75 to finance my trip to the U.S. but that mini book had stacks of stuff which I'd ended up with a couple of years later, many of which were accumulated from the U.S. trip. Actually I'd love to look through that again........ Ian D Edited July 24, 2011 by Ian Dewhirst Link to comment Social source share
Guest kev such
I was at an event a few years ago and a dj who isnt fussed about "OVO" and plays off boots etc... played a tune during his set. The main rather famous on the scene guest had just bought said tune after MANY years of trying to get hoild of one ( the guest is strictly ovo) and for a considerable price. When the guest heard the tune he RAN onto the stage and looked at what format the tune was being played on. From what we could see on the floor the guest was not happy with the dj spinning at the time and made his feelings known that his recently bought prize had just been played on a £10 carver. The guest did his spot but when he went to collect his box at the end of the night he point blank refused to shake the dj's hand and left the stage with an extremely dissallusioned look on his face. Play on whatever format you wish, but be honest about it ( 100% vinyl isnt the same as origional vinyl) and dont expect to be considerded with the respect you feel you deserve for djing when you have taken the easy option and to justify your position you consider ovo dj's, collectors as snobs. ADMITTEDLY I played from boots etc.... but soon realised that for me it was an insult to people who had real vinyl collections, so cleaned them out of my collection. Admittedly its the sound through the speakers that matters, but for me PERSONNALY its the excitement ( and yes at 44 I still get excited over a 7 inch piece of black plastic) that I feel when that tune drops onto my doormat or I've saved etc...paid for it and have one in my hand. Also it is quite reassuring when someone looks over the decks and see's your playing the real thing, and the person hasnt looked over the decks and on realising its a boot etc... looks at you rather distainly. Guest soul over easy
There are plenty of DJ's who can entertain and do a more than competent job without resorting to pressings? So why book someone with a box of pressings and pay them the same rate you would for someone who has the real deal? If you ain't got the records stick to dancing and enjoying the night, let those who do have the records do the entertaining. If you haven't got a copy of something then play something else, 100's of quality records out there and the scene would be a lot healthier for it instead of the sheep mentality we have of DJ's now. And I don't know many if any DJ's who get behind the decks and entertain themselves and no one else, I don't know a DJ worst his salt who goes up there and is happy to clear the floor. Often it is the fault of the promoter booking a much talked about DJ whose set isn't right for the punters that frequent said event. And if it is true that 99.9% of dancers don't give a toss (which isn't true either cause I know many dancers who do give a toss) then why waste money on booking a DJ, buying boots? Just stick a cd in or use a laptop But at the end of the day, most of those who go out and about, know what promoters do what, what DJ's play what so if it doesn't fit in with ones morals/ethics then they can avoid such promoters and Dj's. i get the impression you obviously rater yourself as a dj and collector chalky? i cant wait to meet you in person its gonna be fun...lol.I have one or two close mates on the scene who have pretty impressive collections and are also pretty well known respected dj,s,if any one on here is a collector or dj and collects ovo then yes respect them, me mate forked out 2and ahalf grand out last week on a record ...his choice and his passion. Now i want an honest answer off you and others ok? if there is only a pressing of a record and no original to be had are you seriously saying it should never be played? if so you might be killing the song off as you are depriving punters of hearing it? thus putting the song into oblivion, yet you are suppose to be a dj and northern soul lover. Also can you answer me this question ? i know a lot of folks on here are serious collectors and fork out massive amounts to own a certain song, but whos making the money ? is the artist seeing any of youre spending ? and i hear a lot of these artists if still alive...are strugglingin some cases, and am pretty sure would appreciate a few quid for there particular song?...ktf Link to comment Social source share
Guest soul over easy
Well this is interesting. As someone who has been away from " the scene " for 20 odd years and just starting collecting again it is a minefield out there from my view. Prices are sky high and the music has had more finds than the archilogical society of which at this time I am trying to get some insight into. I have only been to a couple of events and lots of the music played these days I have never even heard ( some nice stuff as well ). As for the DJ side of things I would at some point like to do a couple of spots locally for the love of spinning what origionals I can afford at the time with maybe some copies of some that cost £100's at this time, does that make it wrong? I am spending lots of money on records at the minute and lots of the music I know and love from the days of my travels around the scene in the mid 70's to early 80's. Am I buying records at £20 - £100 or rubbish you tell me!!. I reckon it will probably take me 5 years to get a decent collection together with the prices these days and I want to own the majority of origionals. As I said at the begining it is an interesting topic especially from someone just coming back into the scene. im also in a very similar situation to youreself been back 3 years on the scene after 9 years off, sold my last collection 27 yrs ago so i know where youre coming from. But i have learnt by listening to collectors on here if you can afford ovo then buy it,i managed to pick up a demo copy of the producers / lady lady lady on a mulit colured demo wich i beleive is slightly rare? any way i got a fiver knocked off the asking price and got it for 25 quid,so was well chuffed. But i remember paying 1.50 for it years ago off rob smiths record shop lol... so where i can afford originals am gonna buy thanx to some of the guys on here ...ktf Link to comment Social source share
Steve G
.Now i want an honest answer off you and others ok? if there is only a pressing of a record and no original to be had are you seriously saying it should never be played? if so you might be killing the song off as you are depriving punters of hearing it? thus putting the song into oblivion, yet you are suppose to be a dj and northern soul lover. Hi It's not something that would ever arise. Apart from some tailor made things (like Soul Fox Orchestra), pressings only ever really made of "in demand" originals. And in some cases the pressing actually killed the growth of the tune - e.g. Nat T jones "Moving forward", the greedy buggers pressed it before the originals had really taken off, making for a sound that was strangled just after it's birth and died on the vine. As I have already said plenty of other formats to play most things on - get a CD player or an MP3 and enjoy away..... Link to comment Social source share

What's with the "you are depriving the punter" quote?.You have got as much right as anyone to champion these tunes - got any in mind? I don't play legal reissues if there is a US original out there, especially if there is a DJ to follow with the US original. And if you go back through the history on this site I've never said any different. Paul Shirley
Bloody hell Bob, I'm confusing myself and you're not helping Last one from me too ... it undoubtedly seems irrational but The examples you've 'quoted' were responses to Rod's post in which made reference to a lack of grace and his use of grade as a means of differentiation - which I can't get my head around at all from a dj-ing point of view (as opposed to collecting). As I said, playing originals is playing originals ... ... playing boots isn't, erm, playing originals. - Love it all and have some passion for the right things i.e. the music and not your ego - Collect what you like, play what you like in your bedroom etc (I certainly do) - Don't ever play bootlegs to paying punters because it's taking the piss out of those who spent years looking for and boat loads of cash they couldn't really afford on originals (and it's 'ungracious') IMHO; - Whether you as a dancer or collector are bothered about whether I'm playing originals doesn't really matter to me in the final analysis, I'd much prefer it if it did though and try to frequent venues where people do care - If you play a boot of an original I've struggled to get hold of then I'm gonna see my arse; - If I pay to listen to you play and you're playing boots I think that's taking the piss; In both instances, IMHO of course, you have no respect for the things - call it exclusivity, snobbery, elitism or whatever you like but they have always been key ingredients - that have gone some way towards making this 'scene' different, as opposed to for everyone, run-of- the mill, lowest common denominator, and special in my opinion and experience e.g. how else are you gonna hear what Butch plays? You gotta want it, make the effort and get off your arse, just like you always have and quite right too. How would he react if someone went on before him and played a cut of one of his exclusives? Shrug and say 'never mind', I'll play something else instead'? I think not ... and if the rules are there for the top guys then surely everyone else should try and play by em otherwise we're all hypocrites aren't we? As I said in an earlier post, if you haven't hitched all over the bloody country to listen to certain djs play certain records as a pimply youth, simply because that was the only way you could hear them (or the real mccoy at least), then that would be hard to get your head around and seem pretty illogical I suspect. For me, playing bootlegs just goes totally against the grain. Suddenly everyone's a bloody dj running venues that are half empty cos it's more important that they dj than anything else; lots of punters don't seem to give a sh*t as long as they can hear the 'tune' and I'm afraid I just don't get that. Buy a CD and listen to it at home, swap tapes with someone but go out with higher expectations of the people who are charging you to get in and those who think they have earned the right to stand up and play them. A very well respected mate of mine said to me a few years ago that the day you could hear the Fascinators in Tesco it was all over and f*ck me he was so right. Trust me, I often wish it didn't mean so much to me all this nonsense Bob. atb Phil top post phil, everything that needed to be said is in that post im so glad you said it because i would have been about 3 days trying to convey all that with my english n spelling even if i was as clever as you , but i'll just add this little bit ....when this scene was first taking off .ie clubs playing imported black dance/soul music dj's buying it . wasnt it all original and wasnt all the clubs packed to the rafters ? the biggest killer of the northern scene is the bootleg and for good measure the mas production of them and the tw..s playing them . When you get to a certain age and are married, have kids etc, you just don't want to spend your weekends travelling and staying up all night. That's a young mans game. Where are these 'boot clubs' you speak of, is it like fight club...nothing would encourage me to travel to a Northern Soul event, apart from knowing I was going to see old friends there. Shaun W
Sorry but I think you should take into account people's ages and family life. The first rule of Boot Club is, you do not talk about Boot Club. The second rule of Boot Club is, you DO NOT talk about Boot Club. Link to comment Social source share

Billy Freemantle
like ive just explained on here ,i get the feeling young chalky keeps trying to have a pop at me on here ok? so imm entitled to have a pop back and i aint gonna kiss his arse either,so if you or anybody else want to get on with it ? if somebody wants to explain things to me fairly and realisticly i will listen ? just dont want some sprogitt trying to be smart with me when he was in his nappies whilst i was out doing nighters. I did all nighters in the 60s. But I've learnt a hell of a lot about soul music from 'young' Chalky in the time I've been a member here. Guest soul over easy
you got a problem with any member then sort it out via pms gobbing off is not needed or wanted as said your posts are causing bad feeling any more and will take action so mike as im well aware chalky as something to do with this site along with you so youre gonna be like two peas in a pod ...so basically i am suppose to sit here whilst chalky digs away at me ? we all come from different walks of life right? i have mentioned on here before ive spent a fair bit of time behind bars when not on the scene, and behind bars theres a code of respect witch we all follow ,so when somebody is trying to make an ass of you youre not going to take it lightly hows that for you? ive spent the best part of my life listening to northern in or out of her majestys hotels, i feel chalky is digging at me on several occasions, and i dont particularly like it ? is that fair enough and have you had a word with the man in question aswell? Kris Holmes
I think I might actually be dumber now for having read through 5 pages of this dribble. Thanks Bob for stirring this old chestnut up again....... This debate is like red rags to Bulls & always gets some character like "SOE" all out of shape. There is never any winner, just arguments. Thanks Bob for stirring this old chestnut up again....... This debate is like red rags to Bulls & always gets some character like "SOE" all out of shape. There is never any winner, just arguments. I honestly wasn't trying to and this was in "freebasing"! Nowhere in my original post did I say (or even imply) not to play original vinyl or say playing boots was bad. I was just pointing out something that seemed (clearly to me) silly. p.s. you know you kept reading all 5 pages because you like car crashes. admit it you enjoyed it. Guest markoneill
Nice one, I think I'll probably take the stuff Ive bought to a nighter or evening at some point and hopefull someone can guide me if i have any boots in my box so i can have them for home use. learning ( now I'm in a position too ) so excuse my igorance Link to comment Social source share
