Hendrix didn't come to the UK 'til 1967 so it wouldn't have been 'early sixties'. As far as i am aware there were 'nighters at the Flamingo Club from '62 onwards and there were 50s jazz events ('raves' as they were called!) that were all nighters too.

Wasnt the Flamingo club an allnighter?

That I believe began in 1963.

Maybe one of the mods on here can confirm. I'm pretty sure it was a blues nighter frequented by mods.

I went to my first all nighter in 1964 at La Discotheque in Wardour Street, just up from the Flamingo. Actually can't remember too much about it, except they played Jan & Dean's Surf City, biggie at the time I think. Why do I remember that record and not others?

Later moved on to all nighters at the Scene. The nighters there did finish at about 3ish, then everyone went on to La Discotheque, but then the Scene started to stay open till 6 or 7, just can't remember now. I used to get up there about midnight, met my mates at Piccadilly tube station.

I went to the Flamingo quite often, but never to an all nighter.

Weird to read this thread, had a dream about the Scene last night, could see it all clearly, but all the people down there were my age, as they would be now I guess. Horribly scarey.

Is there anyone else on here who used to go to those clubs?

The Flamingo club, was were the original Modernists first appeared and was actually around from the Mid 50s, initialy starting out as a social club for Jewish young people, playing swing music, during the 50s Britain went through a Jazz Boom, the club's owner, Jeff kruger started to promote live Modern Jazz, but also more importantly featuring all-nighters, but only if alcohol was not sold, the music policy shifted to RnB during the late 50 to very early 60s, basically because the Jazz musicians were becoming very un proffesional but the one thing they left the youngsters who frequented the Flamingo with, was a sense of individual style and attitudes which would set the foundations not just of the of the forthcoming Mod scene but also influence British underground club culture from there on, also the club started to attract the US servicemen and recently arrived West Indians, and as we all know now both groups would leave their influences on future sub cultures, Del x :P
