Denbo Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 I'm after information on "Sittin' Here Crying" by Oscar Perry. In what form was it ever released? Was it released as a single and if so what's the label and flip side? Thanks in advance.
Denbo Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 Can NOBODY help with this request for information??
Denbo Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 Not even YOU can help? My God, what's the scene come to? Apart from the above sad fact, how's things with you? I'm STILL looking for a flat in CENTRAL London, around Covent Garden and Holborn. Can anybody help with THAT, seeings how nobody can help with my other request.
Garethx Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 As far as I know only available on a Collectables CD from 1992 called "Deep in the Soul of Texas Volume 2" although there are a few gaps in the Oscar Perry discography around the late '50s, early 60s.

Thanks. Using Soulfulkindamusic for his discography and the Net for the "Deep in the Soul of Texas Volume 2", that's what I'm coming up with also. Apart from some reference towards a Peppermint Harris CD(?) called "Ain't That So". Can anybody else add any further information?
Ady Croasdell Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 There you go Den, us Landan soulies like to help a scally out! I'm always keeping an eye out for a gaff for you but there's nothing going round here at the mo, unless you want to try being a Gigolo for a bit.
Ady Croasdell Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Hi Gareth, are there any other Oscar tracks on that series? Ady
Garethx Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Hi Gareth, are there any other Oscar tracks on that series? Ady Just that one on volume 2 and "I Found A True Love" (one of the Lee J. 45s) on volume 1. "Sittin' Here Crying" sounds like it was dubbed from disk, maybe an acetate.
Ady Croasdell Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Ta Gareth, Was there an O V Wright 'You're So Good To Me' or 'I Have None' on that or anything similar. Have you heard of them, not 45s as far as I can see. Sorry to switch singers Ady
Garethx Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 "You're So Good To Me" and "I Have None" are on the "Nucleus Of Soul" album on Back Beat, which is half newer (i.e. 1968) material produced in Memphis by Willie Mitchell and some older material like earlier Back Beat 45 Poor Boy. Difficult to say if the 1965-66 cuts are recorded in Texas.

I was on about, the one entitled "Ain't That So", supposedly with 'Sittin Here Crying' on it? If it's on this CD(or Lp?), I wonder if it sounds the same as the one on the "Deep In The Soul Of Texas Vol.2" CD?

It's a very good record, but interestingly this blog https://www.ovwright.org/giant.html quotes Roosevelt Jamison as saying this was one of the Goldwax recordings which couldn't be issued after Don Robey called in OV's contract in the wake of the success of "That's How Strong My Love Is", so maybe a Memphis (pre-Back Beat) recording after all. According to Jamison the other side of the proposed follow up was "Treasured Moments" which was also eventually issued as the b-side of a later Back Beat 45.
Ady Croasdell Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 It's possible our tape went from Memphis to Texas first but it sounds later than 64 to me
Garethx Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 It's possible our tape went from Memphis to Texas first but it sounds later than 64 to me Agreed. I think the songs themselves may well have originated from OV's Goldwax time, but the sessions sound like the other early Back Beat recordings on that album. Makes me wonder how many OV Wright recording sessions there were in the 60s/70s. I'm guessing not that many. Peaks of productivity and then relative inactivity, with the releases being spread over a good few years. Den: I've not got that Peppermint Harris album and don't know anything about it. Might do a bit of reading on it tonight.
Denbo Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 Den: I've not got that Peppermint Harris album and don't know anything about it. Might do a bit of reading on it tonight. I've managed to latch onto a sound file or two from the Peppermint Harris CD(or Lp?) (which, incidentally, is a various artists release and not just Peppermint Harris) but my PC at work doesn't always allow me to listen to sound files, as was the case here. So, let me know, if and when you're able to listen to the "Sittin Here Crying" track, if it sounds any different to the one on the Texas Vol.2 CD. Cheers.

Actually Gareth, I've now managed to listen to the OP track on the Peppermint Harris CD(or Lp?) as I'm now back home on my own PC. I can't actually find a sound file from the Texas Vol.2 CD to listen to. You've got the CD I think, yes? Do me a favour then, listen to the track on the Peppermint Harris CD whatever, and tell me if they are both played at the same speed? I suspect the track on the Texas Vol.2 CD might be slower / slowed down. Thanks.

Have you heard of them, not 45s as far as I can see. Sorry to switch singers Ady I Have None is currently swilling round on my I-Phone, when then f***er works, it is a decent record but just dies if I remember rightly, it promise lots but just stops short of going from good to great. Can throw it up here and will actually listen to it again, to ensure I am not talking loudly and saying nothing, again...
jocko Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Oh and thanks for the tips on the CD's. just bought both! Look some screaming good music.
Denbo Posted July 15, 2011 Author Posted July 15, 2011 Hi biggray1, Thanks for that BUT I'm pretty sure this is off You Tube where I'm convinced it's been slowed down. They've just used the Texas Vol.2 CD cover as artwork on the You Tube posting. I really need to hear the sound file direct from the Texas Vol.2 CD. But thanks anyway. Can somebody help with an actual sound file from that Texas Vol.2 CD?

Denbo Posted July 15, 2011 Author Posted July 15, 2011 The CD version is indeed faster. Thanks mshoals for confirming that for me. Mucho appreciated.
