Pete S Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Anyone tried cleaning records with wd 40? I just did - came out fantastic. Smells a bit strong though.
Citizen P Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Anyone tried cleaning records with wd 40? I just did - came out fantastic. Smells a bit strong though. Do they start quicker?? Sorry. The ads do say it cleans all sorts of stuff- would it be safe on styrene though?? Tony
Gene-r Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Pete, does it leave a residue, or can that easily be cleaned off anyway?
Bitchdj Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Never seen / used WD 40 , but once seen a mate clean a record up with a brillo pad , condition was visually improved from a VG to an EX almost instantly . . . . . err , the downside being it didn't play through too good .
Pete S Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 I used it on a terrible condition jamaican reggae 45, vinyl, it improved it by about 50% to be honest, did it leave a residue? Well it made it extremely shiny. I chucked it away afterwards anyway but just wondered if anyone else had tried it. I used it to get extreme sticker/glue residue off the lid of that jukebox of mine, nothing would get it off, WD 40 did.
boba Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I think this is one of the ways to "polish" a record, which for me is a no-no (and which explains the "extremely shiny" look).
Godzilla Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 The residue might also make it temporarily sound better in the way a "wet play" does but it's a slippery slope (if you'll forgive the phrase) and in the long term will probably lead to a deterioration in sound forcing you to always play wet. Bad for the old stylus, all the gunk too, I'd have though.
Algsoul Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 TRY SERVISOL FOAM CLEANSER 30 BRINGS LOADS OF MUCK UP OUT OF THE GROVES
Soulman Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Anyone tried cleaning records with wd 40? I just did - came out fantastic. Smells a bit strong though. WD40 is oil based and although it will not harm the record it will leave leave a residue. It will also aleviate any initial noise issues as it creates a block between the dust and the groove but also screws the needle big time, clogging it up. Thats why an alcohol based cleaner is recommended... it evapourates. WD40 is a lubricant and doesnt, it merely adds grease .... resolving the immediate problem but not eradicating it. DONT USE IT ANY MORE PETE FFS
Pete S Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 TRY SERVISOL FOAM CLEANSER 30 BRINGS LOADS OF MUCK UP OUT OF THE GROVES Very good but gives me headaches
Guest Preems Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 we use elmer's glue (don't know if y'all have that out there) lay out a thick layer let it dry for a day or two til it's clear and peal it like a lady peals a masque works GREAT on dusty old vinyl can turn a junk disc into a play copy at times, styrene too although often styrene has just had its day
Guest Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Wont do any harm at all, been using for years!.....spray it on, leave a while and then play with an old scrap stylus to remove the gunk...you only need to do this the once.....they will need washing afterwards with soap and water to remove the greasiness.
John Moffatt Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Not sure about risking getting oil-based substances on the label. Just use soap and water myself. Wash quickly but very carefully, don't soak the label, then dry between sheets of kitchen paper. It might not fetch all the muck out, but it's pretty effective.
Trev Thomas Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Very good but gives me headaches you're not supposed to drink it
Simsy Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Is that wise? Priceless! WD40 sounds like a good tip, may give that a try.
Pete S Posted July 13, 2011 Author Posted July 13, 2011 I clean all my records by making them wet then putting a blob of fairy liquid on and washing them to be honest.
Guest Preems Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 i'm trying out this wd-40 tomorrow then, i'll wait till the weekend to try fairy liquid
KevH Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 I clean all my records by making them wet then putting a blob of fairy liquid on and washing them to be honest. Does the job.... and cheaper than WD40.
