Some Blue-Eyed Northern Soul, Anyone?

Recommended Posts

The debate on the Javells post regarding black NORTHERN soul v white NORTHERN soul really got me thinking, and relating the differing views to my 27 years on the scene. I like to think that NORTHERN soul music is as diverse as the people who listen to it and buy the music .

I thought that the previous thread of mine would have run its course, but it seems quite a few of us are happy to keep the chat on this subject going, so here I am again - complete with amendments.

Here's my list of blue-eyed NORTHERN soul faves - obviously it will always be far from complete, as there is so much out there, but these for me are the more outstanding ones:

THE MARTELLS: Where Can My Baby Be

THE DEADBEATS: No Second Chance

THE MODS: Dry My Eyes

BOBBY PARIS: I Walked Away

GARY SOL'E: Holdin' On

TONY COLTON: I Stand Accused

MARK LOYD: When I'm Gonna Find Her

LYNNE RANDELL: Stranger In My Arms

B J THOMAS & THE TRIUMPHS: Keep It Up

THE BUCK ROGERS MOVEMENT: Take It From Me Girl

JOANNIE SOMMERS: Don't Pity Me

ROCK CANDY / CONTEMPLATIONS: Alone With No Love (I'm assuming it's white)

NICKY JAMES: So Glad We Made It

STEVE ALDO: YOu're Absolutely Right

THE SEVEN SOULS: I Still Love You (bearing in mind the 50-50 mix of black and white in the group)

THE TEMPESTS: Just about anything they've committed to vinyl (and yes, I know Hazell Martin is a black singer!)

Be interested to get a cross-section of views on the above, and also to hear what your fave blue-eyed NORTHERN soul tunes are. Would also be nice to hear some interesting stories behind the records, if anyone has them.

What's the Nicky James record Gene, never heard of it! British I presume, so a double slap on the wrist for me.

Hey Pete - yep it's British and it's on Philips. It's a '67 release, and is the B-side of "I Need To Be Needed". Pete Myles used to play this covered up as (wait for it), "So Glad" by Bobby F*knoze (yes I'm serious!).

I think Nicky James had some involvement with the Moody Blues before they hit with "Go Now". His group, The Nicky James Movement, originally consisted of John Bonham (Led Zepplin), Bev Bevan (ELO) and Mike Pinder (Moody Blues). Sadly, he died in 2007 after a long illness.

Couldn't find a clip of this on YouTube, else I'd have posted it here for you. Wonder if it's in Refosoul?

God I hate the term 'blue eyed soul'.

Could someone please tell me why every single white soul singer has to have blue eyes?

Suppose David Bowie had a hit on the Northern scene, would we refer to him as a blue & brown eyed singer???

Cunnie, you've got to call it blue eyed NORTHERN soul, otherwise it annoys a pedantic minority here.........

Franki Valli & The Four Seasons - The Night. A boring choice for many but I only started going to nighters last year. Wicked bassline, can't wait to hear it out one day.

Jem

I think the black artists around at their time definetly had a big influence on the music they were trying to produce.

Motown and RNB seemed more influencial on some young americans than the beach boys etc ,thats why you

have got so many white northern soul classics .

The Contessas - Keep on keepin' on - E George clements 402.

Bought this record assumed it was a black group when I heard it but was very surprised to find its blonde haired blue eyed soul of the highest order when I saw this video on You Tube.

The lead singer suzanne Weir has a beautiful voice.

Think there are a few label variations.

This post has made this thread worthwhile.

According to Jimmy Webb:

"The Contessas were my pet project, all white and all blonde, the cream of the crop...all dressed in identical little blue gingham dresses, and when I walked into Motown with them, Vicki (front desk girl) started laughing harder than ever. She put her head down on her desk and cried. The Executive Suite became a free range for the girls. They came, saw and conquered...the Contessas gyrated around the control room, four angelic look-alikes."

I suppose these are more "dancers" than "soul" ...

Jerry Naylor - City Lights

PJ Proby - you cant come home again (should this be in the "Javells" thread? )

Rufus Lumley - Stronger than me (think this was mentioned elsewhere)

What colour was Shane Martin?

I had more - but Gene used them all in his original list :)

How about : SPENCER DAVIS GROUP - IT HURTS ME SO (flip side to their terrible version of ''every little bit hurts'').

Here's an obscure on for you : KING EDWARD & HIS BD's - M.T.Y.L.T.T. Its a great northern dancer.

Whats this fetching nowadays Pete. Was around £25.00 a few years back but was a hard record to shift for some strange reason.

I've currently got an unsold white demo at £50, there's a couple of label variations, this is the rarer E George Clemens one as opposed to the plain E one. I'd sooner keep it than let it go any cheaper.
