What's this - the Jocko fan club rushing to his rescue?

Jock's arrogance and personal attack exposed his true colours, and I am proud to have played a major part in his exposure here. End of.

I have never liked people who spout off about things they know nothing about, thats nothing new to anyone on here, I have never liked bigots, that is nothing nobody on here already knew, so you have hardly exposed anything new other than your inability to answer any of my points.

I repeat you still have not answered one of any of my specific points, other than have cheap jibes. Not really worth me hanging around for a debate is it.

No Gareth. No one is calling you a blinkered, narrow-minded hypocrite, so don't try to put words into my mouth. That is an example list of my personal faves - I don't shove belief down anyone's throat. You've given your opinion (good or bad) on some of the sounds there, and that's what the debate is supposed to be about, for those of you who didn't know. Keeps it healthy.

And who's retreating? Obviously you're trying your best to defend Jock's stupid outburst by turning it round on me. Doesn't wash.....

Were these not your words? Why don't you go away, like I have, and let people have a good debate as some people are on about interesting things, such as Ady etc were. You are tiring me now.

but wherever you go, there will always be a blinkered cross-section of people (OK, soul snobs if you want), namely:

His exposure as what exactly? A passionate advocate of soul music in its many guises? I'm sure he can live with that.

He wasn't attacking you personally Gene. He was disagreeing with your views in an internet discussion. It's an important distinction.

Please don't take this personally, but your reaction to it all has been mean-spirited and a touch puerile: initially closing your own topic when a dissenting voice was raised and then continuing to badger away in another topic specifically opened to continue debate on what could have been a fascinating topic. Now you crow about Jock's 'demise' to use your original choice of words.

It doesn't look good.

Not taken personally at all Gareth - just that it's obvious you're on Jock' s side. Maybe the use of the word "puerile" gives that away?

Some of my favourite blue eyed Northern dancers are

reparata & the delrons - panic

delrays incorportaed - destination unknown

anderson brothers - i can see him loving you

jaonie sommers - don't pity me

joey heatherton - the hullabaloo

paul abka - can't help loving you

ronnie & robyn - as long as you love me

shane martin - i need you

tony galla - in love

the epitome of sound - you don't love me

timi yuro - it'll never be over for me

blimey this could run to hundreds

I completely understand that many pop records had the correct flavour to become popular Northern Soul plays and don't mind listening to many of them in the course of a night out, but they are not and cannot, surely be the scene's bedrock.

Take J.J. Barnes, Eddie Parker, The Tomangoes, The Salvadors or The Del Larks or Mel Britt or Mikki Farrow or Willie Tee out of Northern Soul history. Replace them with the Paul Anka's, The Gary Lewis's, Buck Rogers Movement etc. and you would have something which wouldn't have lasted two years, let alone the forty-odd and counting we're in now. I am utterly convinced of this.

The pop stompers are an interesting curio, a diversion and a sprinkling of the weird and wonderful. The pop records lack the basic elemental feeling of the greatest Northern Soul records. It's in the vocals, it's the intensity of the productions. It wasn't invented by the Radio Corporation of America, or Warner Brothers or EMI of Hayes, Middlesex. It came from the streets of inner city Black America.

:thumbup:hatsoff2.gif:lol:

A great summary of my views Gareth - how did you know?

For f*cks sake, at the risk of repeating myself AGAIN, I don't have a problem with Jock at all, I disagree with him on some things but all I'm bothered about here is the way he *appeared to* go for Gene, as I would have been whoever it had been directed at, you even.

Slightly off topic sorry huh.gif

But is it just me or is it a fact that this " soul snob and I know more than you attitude " put people off from commenting on topics such as this because people get shot down because of a certain few peoples inabilty to accept other peoples comments or contributions regardless if they are right or wrong ? and would this still be the case if we discussing this face to face rather than on a forum ? I doubt it

Just a thought

Steve

I haven't seen anyone come on here with an attitude that they know more than anyone else? I've seen some defend their beliefs and what is wrong with that, it is called debate. And I doubt any of the main protagonists on this debate would be any different face to face in a venue, I for one wouldn't say something I would say to anyones face.

Now, I would just like to clarify one thing. I did say it in my initial post, last sentence but it would appear some inn an attempt to score a few cheap points overlooked this, what I have said on this topic and almost every other topic is my MY OWN PERSONAL POINT OF VIEW and OPINIONS!

They are NOT the site's view or anything to do with moderating. I think it is quite clear when I am acting on behalf of the site and when I am posting my own point of view but some as I said just want to score cheap points and do a bit of mod bashing, usually cause they have been pulled up over something in the past. As it has been shown that I have done no wrong and haven't abused any so called powers I might have maybe some would like to edit their posts where they make such claims. I wouldn't abuse any moderating powers I have, I wouldn't use any powers I might have for personal gain and certainly wouldn't put Mike in such a situation. I am a big boy and can look after myself, I've had to put up with far worse in life than what someone might say on a message board.

I do agree though with Jock's reply although I do agree that it should have been worded differently and not as strongly as he did. But as said by others as well as myself when you load a post with as much as Gene did he was bound to get a strong response from other members.

As Mike said lets cut the tit for tat posts, name calling or whatever else and have healthy debate. Maybe Gene can copy and paste his original post and we can start again. Get back on topic and move forward.

I think that's a very good idea. Will do when I get home tonight.

Yeah I tried that a few posts back, there's at least 5 other people done one liners, don't single me out.

You appear to be the most vocal with the one liners but it is a message to everyone, get back on topic.

Gene has already said he will repost his original post when he gets home and start again, without the aggro.

Unless everyone's enjoying the arguing?

I'm not convinced that The Delreys Incorporated are white. A brief internet search for the writer, Samuel Crumity yields the following result:

https://www.classmates.com/directory/school/Lincoln%20Memorial%20High%20School?org=1261

Now I know that's in no way conclusive (after all there are many examples of white groups recording songs by black songwriters like The Magnificent 7 with Archie Himons) but to me the vocal on Destination Unknown has always sounded 100% black.

They shouldn't be confused with other similarly named groups who definitely were, like the Jimmy Johnson, Roger Hawkins group who went on to be the nucleus of the FAME studio band.

Not sure - was going by the guitar sound really

I presume that's addressed at me.

Well to be quite frank, I was expressing my opinion on this thread as a whole. I do think the arguments are more entertaining than the 'serious debate', because there had been precious little of that.

However, if you are suggesting that I'm not allowed to express my opinion in this way, you are just re-enforcing the view of Mods dictating what views people can and can't hold. Consequently I fully expect this post to be removed.

There was little serious debate because the original topic was missing, it was chugging along nicely. See, now I'm not sure if I can leave a reply to your post.

Gareth, as a bit of a side interest, and when the mood takes me, I collect scans of artists. I have this in my files as Delreys Inc. Can't remember now where I copied it from unfortunately. Sounds silly but listening to Destination Unknown they kinda "look right" if ya get my drift.

Well i always thought good forum debate WAS loaded.Gives everyone a springboard from which to leap.Pro's and con's etc.

Gene could have started with a plain boring statement, and would have probably ended getting the same resulting posts from Jocko.

My opinion for what its worth.....Gene didn't do anything wrong here.

Jocko.....well not exactly covered yourself in glory.Getting involved in this...... .Car crash thread.Bring back Levine and Trouble.

It was and is addressed at everyone Dave, don't be so sensitive. We are attempting to get back to serious debate and get away from the mudslinging and posts like yours and KevH's are not helping.

Apologies Chalky,,,just getting it off my chest.

agreed dave, i think our brother chalky's missing the point here, any "debate" dissapated at the outset. the truth is, its completely ridiculous that we should be laughing at the slanging match thats playing out here, any outsider looking in would reason that this thread is the perfect breeding ground for airing long standing, deep-seated grudges against each other...or is it a smoke screen,...playing off each other to drag more gullible soulies into this negative rhetoric?

CHALKY......AS THE MODERATOR, YOU ARE IN THE POSITION RIGHT NOW TO CALL A HALT TO IT, SO WHY DONT YOU??

AND I MOST CERTAINLY WOULDNT QUESTION DAVE'S JOURNALISTIC WIT, HIS OBSERVATIONS, TO MANY ARE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR , THEY ARE QUICK, SHARP AND TO THE POINT AND UNLIKE THIS THREAD, HE AINT TRYING TO "VIRTUALLY" THROTTLE ANYBODY

Posted

Gene has already agreed to help move this forward by posting his original post and we can start the debate again. I don't like closing topics if it can be helped. Further comments like yours, Dave's etc just continue the arguments, that is why I've asked them to stop so we can try and move forward and have reasoned debate once the original post is reposted.
