I've been playing with the Nottingham Oddfellows anniversary Video....getting rid of black borders, altering colour, contrast, brightness etc.

Obviously you can only work on what you start with but relatively pleased with the results, not least cos I was there and I'm fleetingly on the video :D

Did have a copy of original VHS which I paid my cash to CESC back in the day, but I lent to somebody back in the late 80's never to be seen again. So the orig video is from a DVD copy so not sure if it would be better from the original VHS but if you have a better/clearer version and can get it to me let me know!

Hopefully brought it back to life a little will upload some bits to youtube at some point but have attached a few stills to show before and after.

The lad I was sat with at Gloucster asked who you were when we were leaving. My reply was - He's the fella on the Leicster video making the fist.

He knew who I meant straight away :D

Yes Leicester...'tis confusing... was called (still is to my knowledge) the Nottingham Oddfellows Club ( Nottingham Imperial Order of Oddfellows Club and Institute to be precise) at Humberstone Gate, Leicester.

thanx soulechoes always wondered how it got the name nottingham odd fellows meself? but cant complain being a nottingham lad loved the name ... good work on improving the quality of the film.

Welcome mate...nice to see it looking more like a real soul video rather than a film from the olden days...god I was only 20...how young are we all on this? lol

This and Stafford got me hooked for life...not sure if that's a good thing or not...certainly shaped my outlook on life forever!

Wow these clips have been cleaned up incredible fantastic danceing Tommo a great keepsake for you.I have also seen another DVD from the same time period featuring another great competition.Don't know where it was but it was won by the fabulous dancer SOULIE Mark Ellis. If that one could be cleaened up the same way it would be brilliant . Never went to the Oddfellows venue but did stafford, Clifton Hall and agree the 80s was a great period criminally overlooked by most

Get the video to me and I'll see what i can do!

On your other point...often hear the term that Northern died in the 80's...what a load of crap that is! I attended Rotherham Clifton Hall, Stafford TOTW, Leicester Oddfellows, Bradford Queens Hall and Hinckley to name but a few...all well attended brilliant allnighters!

Do realise how special the Casino, Wheel and Torch were but I was too young...not getting into the scene until '82...but certainly the above mentioned venues deserve to be recognised as much as the former...particularly Dave Thorley's Stafford with it's fantastic music policy (which has never been surpassed IMHO) which discovered so many awesome tunes...most of which I'm still trying to collect to this day!

Spot on there the great job you have done on the DVD shows how vibrant the 80s nighters were well done mate.On the other Clips i mentioned i don't have the DVD but remember watching it a few years back Some of the east Mids soulies will know where it was it featured some great dancing from SOULIE aka Mark Ellis,it may have been another Oddfellows comp.I recall the DVD was similar quality to the first cut of the one you did it may have been filmed by same guy.Anyone know out there

Not going to Kings Hall myself....saving myself for Errol Green's do at Whitchurch Archibold Worthington Club on 29th!

But let Tomo know about the thread....think the Leicester video has become quite iconic "Northern Soul visually wise". Only second to the This England Casino documentary I reckon and Tomo is the star! lol.

Which is amazing in itself as only a semi professional video rather than a TV production.

I don't think I ever missed one, even went to the very first one at the Electric theatre near the old bus station. Like most people say this Niter and the TOTW Stafford got me hooked good and proper.

thumbsup.gifrolleyes.gif

Mind you, did get a tad warm and the dance floor was always packed, so was good to have a social at Leicester on the Friday followed by as much dance floor space as you dare use, dancing all night to the latest rarities at Stafford on the Saturday. You just couldn't wish for more.rolleyes.gif

I do remember doing Leic on the Friday, Stafford on the Sat and then going up to Morecambe on the Sunday for an all dayer.........ph34r.gif

Oooh I forgot to mention Sean Gibbon's Morecombe Central Pier do's too (before the pier burnt down) another awesome 80's nighter!

Can we dismiss the myth forever that Northern died in the 80's please!!!

Got in touch with a mate who has the DVD i was talking about and he has brought it round. Its called DANCE DANCE DANCE and has footage from 100club,Leicester,Bradford,RSG.Watched it this morning and the dancing comp looks like its at Leicester, its dated as 27/2/1988.Recognise most of the dancers all regular 80s faces.SOULIE ends up winning after several rounds.Unfortunately he dances right at the back of the floor in green shirt so the camera doesnt pick him out as much as the others but there is a great spot at around 51mins 19 where he launches into floor routine to the track ALL OF MY LIFE.He was a mesmerising dancer great feet 60s or 70s Best i have ever seen.By the way if you want DVD i can send it to you let me Know.

My first English allnighter at the tender age of 15 yrs !!! Me and my mates were VERY big into the CASUAL side of football at the time and we were staying with my mates big brother in Nottingham that weekend . My mates big brother and his mates ( ALL EX WIGAN ) took us along that night , had been to a couple of scottish nighters at the time , BUT there was no turning back after this , still chuckle when I see that lad ( Tommo possibly ) in the red pringle jumper with white stripes dancing !!!! Bought myself one on the monday morning as he looked so cool !!!!

Happy days indeed and a quality nighter , made two trips down to Loughborough for the 4th and 5th Anniversary's

Now in technicolour lol

And me again, showing off me new patch (1m34s) and dancing again in yellow vest (2m14s)

Never even knew I was on this.

27 years and I haven't changed a bit :)

That last pic is Sam Grey, part of the Letchworth crew and we there there in force that night for what was another great night. Agree with all the above who said that the 80's were a great time for the scene with so many great venues and toons being spun on an almost daily basis (ah the 6Ts Mafia)and more modern than you could shake a stick gracing the decks! TOTW (which I well recall being attacked by many in the mags etc as a playground for the pompous - funny how things/views change with time, the mighty Morecombe Pier; 100 Club; the Oddfellows; RSG - the list is endless! Sadly so many good friends on that video that are no longer with us. I remember the night well as i left my then, and now Ex, wife in a hospital bed recovering from a punctured lung, something which I still feel bad about! When the DVD dropped through my door I bunked off work and watched it 10 times, not only for my many moments of glory, but for the fact that it captured all that was great about the venue, the people and the scene. Great days/nights!
