Musically don't compare to some of the other 'modern' artists quoting similar influences e,g Meyer Hawthorne , Eli Paperboy Reed etc This lot are in the same category as Vintage Tosh or whatever they were called who appeared on the recent Imps concert in Manchester - all flash and no substance soul or music wise. I was confused by the thread title because I've never heard of a singer named "Plan B" (I'm in the US) and "Plan B" is the name of the "morning after" pill. What a terrible name for an artist. Ernie Andrews Posted June 28, 2011 Share Posted June 28, 2011 Bob The term Plan B refers to "Alternative" as in if we dont suceed then go to plan B and this was used back hundreds of years ago before the contraceptive pill had even been thought about. Could just imagine some young virgin losing it for the first time and the guy says if I make a mistake you can always go for Plan B I think the lady in question would be a little confused over here BOB! Guest Lobster Madras Posted June 28, 2011 Share Posted June 28, 2011 (edited) Ben is actually a good lad.. he used to come to parties we put on in the east end from around 2000 as a very young lad and MC a bit, was always interested and respectful... he witnessed me playing soul 7's a few times and stopped by my record stall in Spitalfields where our mutual friend Chris used to help out, seems the soul music genuinely has influenced him... As for the others; Meyer Hawthorne's version of New Holidays " maybe so maybe no " needs a health warning though..... Made me feel quite sick ! I just dont think that many of them can cut it, and of course anyone is gonna compare with the greats, or even the also rans we love so much from the classic era, why wouldnt you? those guys set the bench mark, so if you cite them as an influence your gonna get compared. Guest LEICSSOULIES Posted June 28, 2011 Share Posted June 28, 2011 I Saw the clip whilst getting ready to go out on Sat Plan B are superb, and the last album The Defamation of Strickland Banks had (i say had as its last years!) to be the best modern Album I' ve listened to in a very long time, he has a real soulful voice, and I saw them live in Leicester O2 Arena in October, fantastic.. It was nice to get my head out the Northern Soul Sand and the ears perked up to something thats refreshing, and new.. Not the usual b*****cks that is available in the charts. Regards Ali I don't think most people have only just discovered him, he's been posted about on here loads of times, from when he did his first Jonathon Ross appearance and maybe before that. There's also been a couple of promo videos posted up. HI GEESE, Its difficult to be offended when you are just passing your own personal opinion on this subject but dont lower yourself to cheap jibes by calling him "the morning after pill guy". Taking into context the fact he said he drew his influence from the era of the Casino northern soul years, i would suggest image wise and musically, then we should not really make comparisons with artists of that era. Being influenced is taking something that has substance and putting your own mark on it. My sister bought the Strickland Banks cd for me back in january and i like it . It does have a soul element to it and find it refreshing and different to some of the sh*te thats portrayed as soul these days. There are very few creditable soul acts that have records in the charts these days although as stated there are some that given time may make it. In todays music scene how many artists perform because they believe in their music/lyrics and the message contained within it or do they perform to achieve fame and fortune?. Earlier on in the very same interview, he confirmed he has not quit hip-hop music, as the Strickland Banks soul album is just a one-off, and that there will be a couple more hip hop albums in the near future.
