Just thought it would be nice to give a Nod to a Wonderful Lady

who is not in good health these days (as is not Colin her husband )

Her Babys back then as many members on here would remember

were The Cleethorpes Pier and The Winter Gardens. She gave many a DJ

their Big Break back then when you look at the Original Line Up from those humble

beginings, plucking DJ's from venues up and down the country who were making a name for themselves

and recomended to her as fan favourites. These venues made people sit up and take notice even Dave Godin

making regular trips there and becoming a firm friend with Mary whom he admired and had

the greatest respect for and this was all down to Mary, she never made a penny bless her, she paid

the best wages to her DJ's as she knew they would put the money to good use to make sure

the best records money could buy would get played (whether it was rare or not mattered a jot, ) old or new, we and she

just wanted Quality and she new her DJ's would not let her down, but what i want to know is what YOU remember from that era,

your involvment with Mary and Colin at these wonderful venues

with the loyalist members you could ask for ( even her dodgey DJ sessions behind the decks on the odd occasion lol )

she would freely tell you her self she was no expert on the mic, but her heart and soul was willing, I just

want to along with you give a bit of credit where it's due to her , happy, sad or funny times you may have had and would like to share

with the rest of us.

Hi Chalky, She doesn't get out as much as she used to, but i was

told she was spoted at a Boomarang do at Thornes Canal Tavern Recently.

She also sells records on the car boot site at Hemswell Market (indoors) but am told

she may be giving it up soon due to ill health.

Hi Rick,

Definitely at Thorne, she bought a record off me

I suppose time is catching up with us all, some more so than others

Too right, None of us getting any younger, old habits die hard as she can't resist a bargain, she still keeps her finger in lol,

we don't appreciate in a lot of cases what people have done on this wonderful scene of ours until

they are no longer with us, didn't want this to happen in Marys case as i personaly have a lot to thank her for.

Well said that man, me and my wife were talking only last week, about how others have taken all the prizes over the years and got all the recognition, whilst this lady never gets a mention compared to others. Some of the greatest records played on this scene came from those venues and from your comments i can see why dj`s given the trust to perform by a promoter, who obviously never made any financial gain, just the love of it eh...........GET WELL SOON MARY

If there is one person that deserves recognition for services to this scene of ours , it is without a doubt Mary Chapman .

The vision , enthusiasm and " pioneer spirit " Mary had for Cleethorpes , was developed via the assembled DJs , encouraging them to " get on with it " , and giving them belief in what they all were doing . As a result , this gave Cleethorpes huge respect and high credibilty , and though not fully apparent at the time , its' ever evolving contribution , helped pave the way for a broader musical outlook , acceptance and understanding on the scene .

As you say Rick , Mary and Colin are not in the best of health these days , but when I call them up to have a natter , you would not know it , as both of them are as effervescent as they ever were . I am always guaranteed several hearty laughs in every conversation , and always put down the telephone after the call with a smile on my face . I am honoured to be called a friend of The Chapmans .

Cleethorpes tales ? too many , and several of them definately unprintable biggrin.gif

Good Morning Malc,

They both hide it well don't they !

Mary will be up Hemswell Market this morning (as usual) , My mate

Colin (from Scunny) will be up there to see her (as i type), he always takes a

few bits up for her and has a natter and a bit of banter (as you do)

and he always rings me on the Sunday evening to fill me in on his finds

and how she is, on one occasion she said to him, i need to leave and

went home early, so clearly all is not well.

Colin makes me smile flying about in his electric buggy, i wonder how

long it will be befor people start turning up at N S Venues on them, we

will have to have special parking areas and plug in points to charge up lol. Shame we can't get Mary on here,

the stories she could tell and the questions she would get asked eh.... Rick

it often amazes me when sometimes all we seem to hear is Wigan, Wigan, Wigan and very little of Cleethorpes. Cleggy was so popular it put the shits up Wigan management, and as we know they tried stealing the thunder by putting on the "Wigan at Cleethorpes" thing, which got shot down in flames. Besides us all knowing it was a shit thing to do it was heartening to see the loyalty extended to Mary & Colin.

Enjoyed Wigan late '73 and '74 but when Cleggy opened in '75 it was a whole different game for me. It was far easier to get to, the music policy was better by taking the best of the Wigan and Mecca type sounds of the day being spun by a stable of local guys plus guests. Apart from those what made Cleggy for me was the friendliness of it, it really was like Mary & Colin's family. I felt at home at Cleggy, felt like I belonged somewhere.

Started going when it was just in that upstairs room at the Winter Gardens. Then of course came the Pier, then the Pier + Winter Gardens (who can forget trogging back & forth down the sea front at 3 or 4 in the morning), then just Winter Gardens. Loved every minute of it and so many mates made there.

I remember one Christmas at Mary & Colin's house at Walcot. From what I remember it was like a 2 up 2 down kind of place. Myself, Poke and Dean Roach spent all our time out of the way in the kitchen. Still have very vivid memories of Dean being stretched out over the sink but less said about that the better whistling.gif

Just a quick view of Mary & Colin at the end of this.

Used to be a long journey from Southampton in a minibus in those days, but worth every mile. Six hour trip then through Newark etc. Not the miles of motorway you have now.

Great memories of the Pier vibrating.

For the information of Rick Scott.

An old buddy of yours, Paul Rowan, lives about two miles from me in Reading.

Thanks for some of the best nights of my life Mary.

Pauls a lovely lad , haven't spoke to him since last year, must give him a buzz,

I remember once at the Winter Gardens in 75 I'd given a copy of a record to a friend to keep and he'd put it in his bag in the cloakroom - later on in the morning my friend appeared with the record in 2 pieces apparently two blokes had decided to sleep across the bags - Mary Chapman was standing close by and immediately refunded the money I paid for the record - very sweetly and no questions asked - I was really grateful - a lovely lady.

Must add that one of the best all nighters I ever attended was on the Pier the atmosphere was something else.

All the best

After reading this thread I rang Mary and she asked me to place a response on her behalf (she hasn't got a PC). If you have any further comments I will gladly pass them on to her.

"Hi There, how are you?

I just had to say a big thank you for all these nice comments, I have a few in return.

You know that we really never had it so good until Cleethorpes. I still feel a warm glow about the actual events we held there.Even now all these years on, I look back in almost disbelief in what we all created. Why it was such a winning formula had to be its contribution from ALL concerned.

I can't thank you all enough

.

What is so wonderful know, is the amazing music that has been and continues to be unearthed. Also, there are events within your own striking distance to go to, for that, oh so important opportunity to hear our favourite music together.

Although I have had to take something of a back seat myself. I strongly feel that Northern Soul is in Good Hands, that the people who are there, really do care. It's good for a lot more years yet, in my opinion, largely due to the fact that both the music and it's club-goers haven't allowed it to stagnate.

I have managed, thanks to friends, to go to a few more places myself in the last year or so, so hopefully I will see you around.

I am enjoying every minute of it and certainly not ready to hang up my "Soul Shoes" yet.

I have been asked to DJ at the Stamford Club in Cleethorpes on August 12th 2011, so I am kept quite busy trying to decide what to leave at home. Meanwhile for those of you who have Kept the "Faith" for years and years, we know it's not all over yet.

"Keep on Keeping on"

first met Mary and colin on Boston market..must be 1972/73.. used to buy lots of soul 45's and later northern when she had it..was a very important source to many in that area.As for Cleethorpes i'd been to the early dayers and nighters but honestly preferred Wigan as i'd been going regularly. But, will testify to the fact that the casino did have an air of snobbishness/eliteism that cleethorpes didnt have..and they played some great stuff first, the pier allniters seriously affected wigans attendance..and they did rip off Marys cleethorpes badge..not exactly a breath of fresh air..more like a welcoming breeze..genuine down to earth people, the real deal as the tanned one would say..

Mary and Colin are a wonderful couple, they always treat their customers well at Cleethorpes and always had time for them.

I met them through Ian Dewhirst and Gary Field, we used to trapse to the Pier and the Winter Gardens skipping between the 2 venues throughout the night.

Whenever they were on we'd hire a minibus from Leeds, or if we could cadge a lift all the better.

Great days and all due to a great couple with bags of insight, respect for the scene and great personalities.

I first met Mary Chapman in the very early 70's in Boston Lincs, my family were then market traders. i was in the process of leaving full time education. to enable my love of soul music i had the fantastic idea of introducing lincs to the available pressings of the times-with a few originals for good messure. I also used to take my play box(?) and play current biggies to the locals. my stall and stock was very limited but with the upsurge in interest in the scene the young folk of lincs congregated around the stall for most of every saturday. mary was aq casual trader starting out on a business venture and used to sell costume jewellery, her stock consisted of one suitcase. stalls were highly sought after in those days and to even get one on a casual basis very hit and miss, more often than not a trip home with only expense the outcome. one saturday the toby approached me and asked if i minded a trader standing on the side of my stall with a small table. no problem. the lady turned up and named mary chapman-no sign of colin then. she watched and became fascinated with the interest of the youth of the day. we became firm friends and i liked her enthusiasm for our scene. she also over the next months learned the basics of the soul scene, still selling very little of her own stock, she watched my stall when i bought teas etc. i could see she really enjoyed the contact with the youth and their desire to own the latest offerings. for me this was a stop gap way of financing my record buying and travelling to the venues of the day-mecca blackpool, va va's etc etc.

many times going direct from boston to the north west with kev bond a lincs lad who became a good friend. as it was decided that i join the coal board as an aprentice market trading became unworkable. as the time drew near i remember turning up at boston market to find a new record stall had arrived. upon inspection found out my suprise mary and colin chapman at the helm. initialy i was a little miffed, but able to handle the competition without any comment, and still remained firm friends with the chapmans. mary then approached me with an offer to d.j at a soul all dayer she was going to promote, and also asked if i could get other d.j's for the event. which i wholeheartedly agreed to do and cleethorpes first northern soul all dayer took shape.

im sorry to hear that both are unwell and send my love to you both-marys drive and ambition created a legendary part of the scene as we know it, and colin and i did have some real laughs. from day 1 mary never asked for admissions for me and my travellers-worth a fortune in its own right-and was always a curteous and good friend

i feel honoured to be the catalyst to her subsequent heights on 'our' scene.

god bless you both

Many thanks for starting this homage to Mary who interestingly is the only female promoter/collector to be recognised in Northern Soul's Hall of Fame.

I have not seen Mary or Colin for approximately 34 years. We first met when Mary had a record stall in Boston Market (circa 1972/3) and I would hang around listening to the records she played on a tinny portable record player. I was 13/14 at the time and probably one of only four or five black kids in the Boston area. I'm sure Mary took pity on me as I never had money to buy records and Mary very charitably allowed me to hang around and occasionally watch over her stall while she had a cup of tea. I remember on one occasion she passed me an Otis Redding record to put on the deck which I did. After a few seconds she stopped it, flipped it over and said, to my embarrassment, "I see you don't know your Otis" I also clearly remember attending, with my friend Alan, what was probably one of Mary's earliest gigs, The Magnet Tavern in Boston Town Centre - my friend's Dad waited outside and ferried us home afterwards. I was 14 at the time. Mary's first All Dayer at The Wintergardens Cleethorpes is now a hazy memory as are the many nights I spent on the Pier. I moved to London in the late 70's where I embraced a wholly different lifestyle. However, I have very fond memories of those early times and I do occasionally visit Lincolnshire and would love to make contact with Mary and Colin - Rick please pass on my details.

We (Vicky Palmer, Bron Wosencroft, Mev Maguire and me, Alison was then Palmer) and others! spent lots of times with Mary and her hubby welcoming us both at Cleethorpes, which was our home. Wigan was ok, but it was Cleethorpes, blagging a lift from the milkman between the Peir and the Winter Gardens was our first love. We also spent new year's eve with them, and many other parties at their home.

Amazing couple, to open their home and their love for the music, which I think was just how it was. Not sure my parents (or me as a parent would now agree) but hey....that was then. Bless them, and thank you for the old memories. Hello to both of you, hope you are good :-) xxxx

Ah, now there's some names from the distant past. Over the years I've forgotten so many things but some things stay with ya forever. I used to regularly travel up on the bus that Poke and his ex-wife Vicky used to run from Stamford. Well remember the Sunday mornings when the bus would drop myself, Mo Warwick and Vicky Palmer off on the A1 with Vicky thumbing it south to Norman Cross and myself & Mo thumbing it north to Grantham.

Bev Maguire is living just near Grantham at Harby. Never really see her but did bump into her about 3 years or so ago when she doing a car boot. Always had a lot of time for Bev, but not as much I'd have liked :wicked: Lovely lass but could she yap, even when straight :D ... I see and have a chat to her sister Bridey quite often. Mo Warwick passed on about 4 or 5 years ago.

Also remember the New Year parties at Mary & Colin's place at Walcot ..... always a hoot

You probably don't remember me as I was an inconsequential little squirt (still am  )

Yeah, Wigan was ok but it was Cleethorpes

So no Dave, I don't remember you, but th

at's not because you were inconsequential, it's because my memory is crap ;-)

Bev I've been in contact with reguarly, she's very happy and still gorgeous!

Vicky, the last thing I heard she was living in the US and still in contact with Bron I hear.

Very happy memories of those days xx

Last saw Mary at a record fair in Peterborough in the mid 80s, think she was selling some stuff and I got Cognac "How high" off of her which she was championing. Glad to hear she's making a comeback. Top person.
