Just want to give a big heads up to Kent's new offering. As I stuck this Cd in the player I wasn't too sure what to expect, lots of unissued tracks.

I'm not gonna' mince words, it is simply brilliant, tack after track of quality. Do yourselves a great big favour and get it!

I'll second that Val.

It's a real accolade to the variety and breadth of Dave Hamilton's talent and his long and lustrous career...from the early Temple recordings, through the (classic what you'd expect from Mr Hamilton and his various partners) the likes of Pricilla Page on Topper and the sublime mid-tempo gem by JT Rhythm on Palmer with, of course, the bonus of Mike Terry's sax bubbling along throughout. Also thrown in is one I've been championing for a few years now Bobby Dee's chugging R'nB style outing on DemoRistic 'Sweet Thing Pts 1 & 2' .

Quite a few unissued tracks here as well. Ortheia Barnes','Never, Never Leave Me' is very good    as is 'I'm Begging You' by Chicago Pete

The later tracks by The Moderations, Nightchill and New Experience are all quality sides.

To top it off you have the instrumental of 'You Turned Me Around' and an edited version of Dave Hamilton's 'Soul Suite' just in case we forget that Mr Hamilton was steeped in Jazz traditions that made him a main player when helping set up Motown Records in the late 50's/early 60's with Berry Gordy Jr.

Another Legend, another great cd from Ace/Kent. Great informative sleeve notes. This cd is a definite 5***** with more than a little something for all tastes.

If you like good soul music I suggest you check it out.

Job done.:thumbsup::hatsoff2:

I still remember buying the first Dave Hamilton offering. I was a bit uncertain about it, back then I didn't even know that the kind of music I liked had a name (Just as well, I thought Northern Soul was that Wigan's Ovation crepe. I'd've run a mile...), but Red Lick kept on saying nice things about it so in the end, in a moment of weakness, I bought it.

Then it was weeks before I got around to playing it.

I didn't even know there was new one out. Must go and investigate. Ta

Listened to it - loved it yes.gif

Just underlines again how sophisticated this man's work was - much of it true crossover IMO (no not 'crossover' no.gif as we know it) - a truly creative crossover of soul, funk, northern and that strong jazz influence - pure brilliance

His instrumentals are phenomenal ohmy.gif

Excellent news.I have been a Dave Hamilton fan ever since i brought some Topper stuff off Gilly in the far distant mists of time.A true genius.Thats Dave tho it could be Gilly as well.Congratulations must go to Mr Croasdell as sorting all those tapes has taken a lot longer than even he would have thought. What a result!Iam especially pleased that the Webb People is included, hopefully cleaned up a bit.I have been giving this an airing on my few visits to the decks for a couple of years now.I might just have misread a post but i am sure i,m beggin was released.

May i say i was in this at the begining having been a friend of Dave Hamilton(thanks uncle Popcorn)for a number of years and when Dave passed on i wanted to be involved in making sure that a life times work wasnt going to be trashed or fall into the wrong hands.Dave had left a wife and family behind and they needed to be looked after just as Dave had gone out of his way to take care of me.I have to admit that despiite the mass of tapes that lined his basement studio walls im amazed and delighted that the Dave Hamilton story still gives up its secrets for all to enjoy and because ACE/KENT do a propper all round and legal product package the dear Mrs Hamilton should find daily life that little bit easier.Thank-you Dave and thank-you Ady. Gilly and Nicola Anderson(Raison)

gilly,

firstly i have to say that the series of topper cd's you have been involved in with ady have been most invaluable in educating myself better about the music of detroit and exactly who the talented musicians were, who were responsible for these wonderful tunes that have enhanced our scene, particularly in the last decade. although i havent heard or bought this latest offering, i know there is a genuine and obvious need, not just from the point of view of adding to the saga, but the legitmate fact that by doing so, i like many others will have contributed to the upkeep of a family whose head has passed before, unlike so many other unsung hero's of ours who never got the unique opportunity that dave hamilton's family are now experiencing, god bless them. i am sure they feel the same way to you, the fact you showed such a valued interest in their fathers work and as a result, it has payed off both financially and historically...they have the satisfaction of knowing what he did was not all in vein and weare the recievers of a musical catalogue, unearthed by your determination and perseverence, that would have laid unknown and uncharted but instead, has given up a wealth of masterpeices to grace both our hifi's and our dancefloors. i for one, certainly hope this is NOT the last of the material both you and ady have been researching...i believe you must feel like you are on a wonderful oddessy, a voyage of discovery and at the same time you must feel great satisfaction that you are doing something that benefits others greatly,...if anything, the liner notes that you set out in the very first cd 10 years ago/, say it all, through what you have achieved in their's and dave hamilton's name, you've also earned a great love and affection and you in turn, have given that back.

i love everything ady puts out BECAUSE of the effort that has gone into the products....too many same ole, same ole, rehashes to mention, thats why anything kent has to offer is worth savouring and that also includes what mr. rounce contributes, lest i forget. i would imagine for you personally, TOPPER has been a holy grail and for collectors of the vinyl, likewise as prices reflect. it was announced as the last great undiscovered label of detroit...how right was that prophesy?, 10 years on, we are still discovering the truth and our minds are being opened and broadened like never before....perhaps one day ady's other burning desire ( or should that be mine? ) of completing the rca quest, will be realised, but thats another story!.

anyway, think ive done enough of the rambling now , so thanks for the treasures untold mate and lets hope they wont be the last.:thumbsup:

I'm so glad to see that all those years Gilly spent befriending people in Detroit is now benifiting so many more people. When ever I was over with Popcorn and others, they would always say what a great guy Gilly was.

Ady has done a stand up job once again with this CD, but there again he often does, the Piped Piper material, Ted Jarrett, Kent Harris etc, etc, infact the whole team at Kent have done as much as anyone else to keep the wonderful music we all love alive.

Fantastic job all, now everyone go out and buy it, so they can continue providing a great service to soul fans around the world.thumbsup.gif

here,here dave,

good quality releases are few and far between these days and the vast majority worth buying, are usually via kent. weve come to reason that a large proportion of the really top notch anthems have happened in the last decade, unreleased material, every bit as good as the stompers weve witnessed over the previous 3, that were legitimate releases and its been ace/kent at the forefront....too right its driven the scene onwards and attracted more newcomers to our cause and, as you said, long may it continue.....my one impending hope is that the deadlock with the owners of the rca catalogue can be resolved and we get vol.3 before we're pushing up daisies.
