Platters 81 Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 (edited) The O'Jays version is correctly credited on the 45...yet on the Soul Sounds LP its credited to "M.Lance" (!)...i know writing credit mistakes do happen...but i know of no obvious connection between the Major and the O'Jays/ Liberty....my current theory is he introduced them to the tune....they didnt know the orig 45 at the time so they put his name on the writing credit...corrected later..any comments? Tlscapital Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Hi Jim, it was first issued on the San Antonio, Texas Dynamic label in 1964 by the Commands (who also composed the tune), My guess is that the O'Jays covered the tune and it was issued on the Imperial 45 in 1966. Being revived by the famous O'Jays on the major Imperial company, Houston Taxas based Back Beat label decided to re-release it by the original artists the Commands. The O'Jays album Soul sounds saw the light in 1967. So, what is the M.Lance credit ? I'm clueless, is it just a mistake and is it Major Lance or any other Margaret or Mick ? I don't know. But it's also a Sanisa music and not ASCAP copyright credit. I have no clue what is Sanisa Music though. Does anybody have a lead on that ? So it's also the last sixties edition of that tune (Soul sounds LP) that has the wrong credit. Minit is Imperial, so if it's not just a plain mistake at the label print what would be the reason for that ? Once again, I have no idea. Cheers, Tim
boba Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 I'm sure it's a mistake. They did get the publishing company correct which was probably more important anyways. I don't understand the other poster's comment about it not being ascap, on all three records the publishing company is affiliated with ascap.
Anoraks Corner Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Same credits on the WD...mmmmmm WD Must admit, I find that mistakes with spelling/credits usually happen on the picture sleeves, but not on the labels, when it comes to Japanese presses.
