Guest Dan
nah you've all got it so wrong. what it's all about is wearing a bowling shirt, listening to old wigan tapes and erecting a shrine to russ winstanley in your back garden. who wants to hear new stuff when copies of dana valery still exist? a day without hearing that is a wasted day. Guest Andy BB
How many times are you allowed to listen to each track before you have to bin it then? Surely by the time it made it onto the tape you're swapping it was too late? I've got a friend in his early 20s who buys soul records like we buy groceries (and spends a mint) and he often gets really excited by records I have on old tapes from the 80s, records that were played to death then but which he hasn't had a chance to hear. Your policy is acomplete no-go, unless of course you have a panel of soul judges who decide what can and can't be played. I bet you a pound to a penny that if you list the contents of that tape someone will be bored to death with one of the tracks and at least a few of them will be classed as oldies by many people on here. You'd be surprised how many records played on the soul scene are 'played-out oldies' on the Mod scene by the time you hear them (and vice versa). So, I demand you explain your selection policy now, or I'll zap you with my death gun! And while you're at it, list the contents of this "never heard before anywhere in the world" cassette tape. :-) Link to comment Social source share

Guest Andy BB
Pedant Shane The thread after that contradicted his "new to my ears" statement somewhat. However, if that is the case perhaps any new venue could offer a list at the door and Steve and his friends could cross off those they've heard before and a not be passed around the DJs to avoid them "I like hearing new records" isn't much of a debate starter is it? the implied "I can't stand hearing familiar records, and that's what lots of people on this scene play and enjoy, and they're all old and fat and boring and should move on" is. Supercorsa
One Person's Oldie is another Person's Newie and vice versa! I think Wayne C mentioned this on another thread. For me there are few tunes that I hear on tapes or CDs etc that really grab me in a way that I have to have it. (If by chance, was one of the few Dan). For me nothing can beat being at a club and hearing the new to me tune belting out at a hundred decibels. eg I will take to the grave a vivid memory of Suspicion being played for the first time by Guy, or the first time I heard the Martells. I can even remember where I was sitting when it came on. On one of the sette style seats at the far end of the dancefloor from the stage, near the food counter. Then over the speakers, quietly at first: all alone in my lonely room looking out my window tears falling from my eyes cos my baby just said goodbye By that last bit I was meta-physically lifted from my seat to the floor where for the next 2 minutes I was experiencing the Northern Soul equivalent of an orgasm. I believe if I heard it on a tape, it wouldnt have the place in my memory that it commands 20 years later. Which is why I like going to places where there is a good chance the DJs are going to play stuff i dont know. Of course the downside can be hours of stuff I dont know, and I'm not enjoying, but the upside is the chance of taking home a memory of 'thats where I first heard...' It doesnt just apply 60s newies DJs either. Edwin played a fantastic set of imaginative oldies at Abergavenny 2 weeks ago, many of them unknown to me. Guest James Trouble
Not found the right thread to post this little story on before, but I think this is the perfect place... I was DJing the rarest of the rare room at the Stoke Kings Hall, it was a bit of a grave yard shift, and there were only about 80 people left in the room by the time I came on. I had just put my Detroit Executives C/u (really an unknown band on a one off acetate) on the decks and it was playing. I think I had only played it out 4 or 5 times, this being the first time north of camden. A newie in every sense of the word. Totally unknown, never before heard or played out. Then this guy comes up to the decks while it is playing. He says in his gruff northern voice. "aye up lad, this is posed to be a newies room!" "Hey?" I reply "but this is a newie, it's only the first time it has ever been played out up north, maybe only a handfull of people in this whole building have ever heard it played out before." "nay, nay, I mean newies." "what?" "you know? like newies. Look lad, just play me some newies I know." Unbelievable. "NEWIES I KNOW" I'd played proably 1/2 an hour, maybe 45 mins of music that had probabyl never been played up north before as well. Crazy. How can it be a 'newie' if you know it? I'm still in shock. God I know that feeling it happened to me the first time I heard Bobby Sheens' If I Ever Dreamed I Hurt You". I went stone cold all over. But I don't think it would have done it from tape at home-it had to be big and loud. Barbara Mason's 'I Ain't Got Nobody" was new to me about four years ago. What a great record. Salena Jones "I Got The Blues" is interesting. I keep hearing it. Is it by any chance rarer than either Della Reese's version (is that on 45?) or Micki Lynn's version ? In the grand scheme of all things Northern it shouldn't fit-Salena's (UK recorded?) version is rather jazzy and Della Reese is a bona fide black music legend while Micki Lyn is I suspect (gulp) a country singer. I've never had an Edwin Starr record in my playbox since. I like hearing records I've not heard before if I like them, couldn't care less that someone somewhere will say "That was a big sound for three weeks at the Ashbury Under Lyme Youthclub in 1972 until three copies turned up, so it can't be rare and its a bit overplayed. Not heard it or seen a copy for 33 years mind." Its like Columbus did discover America even if there were people already living there because he didn't previously know it was there. Or something. Scratches head Technicality - it was ISSUED on the album, but the 45 issue comes much later and for a specific purpose. So technically it's not a re-issue but I can see how it might be counted as such, even if it's the only issue of the track on 45. So if you want it on 45 thats one you want-and I want one. Md Records
If we're gonna use the term 60's Newies, then maybe let's try and figure out a clearer definition for it, as all Records are known by someone, starting with the people who made the ****ing things, conversely there's no one that knows every Record made & played (although there are a few that feel that the maxim doesn't apply to them) in other words it's a bit of a mess, so get out there and start playing stuff that's new to YOU and you believe to be good, and F*** the "Intelligentsia". Guest in town Mikey
Even someone who knows Jack Shit like me managed to play Stevie Z a couple of tunes round his gaff that he hadn't heard. Keep Digging Des I'll be holding you to that next weekend Des. You'll know its me, I will be canvassing the patrons, with a clipboard. What percentage of tunes that more than 50% of those questioned dont know is acceptable? Seriously it can work in many ways tho. I hardly missed a SITC at the last 2 venues, and I swear I had never heard Harry Deal until the Paul Smith DVD. But Paul (SITC01) insists he played it at just about every one. Link to comment Social source share
Md Records
Mikey, you KNOW I wasn't advocating the playing of a whole set of "unknown/60's newies thingys".Stop being pedantic or I won't sell you one of these sealed "Harry Deal" Albums on the Eclipse Label, that I have in stock for £20 (inc P & P) Des Link to comment Social source share
Guest
I hear loads of "new to me" sounds, cos before the summer of 2000 I had never even heard of Northern Soul. When i buy a new sound, quite often I never know whether I'm buying a played out oldie or something relatively unknown I came over from the mod scene, when I was about 13/14 I used to have these photocopied patches on my bedroom wall saying things like Wigan... I had no idea at the time they were actual clubs! I used to go to what was called alternative nights which were actually NS do's at the King Charles ball room in Gillingham Kent, I was about 14 maybe 15 when they started, then did the scooter scene where I heard a lot more soul, then back to the mod scene for many years before getting fed up with the shite they were playing, hence the move back to where there was decent music still about 8 or 9 years ago, as Andy said earlier on there are things from both scenes which cross over, a few records getting hammerd on the soul scene at the moment are old mod classic plays, still swings and roundabouts. I dont care if something is played out, I just like what i like and HATE people telling me I shouldn't! Hope your enjoying the scene Link to comment Social source share
