Guest modernisto Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Recently launched, there is an insurance policy now available specifically for vinyl records. It has been designed by a broker (Newmoon Insurance, which specialises in insurance for niche collectibles) and a collector of northern soul records who also works in the insurance industry. There are some unique features in the product and premiums are competitive. With record values continuing to rise, now appears to be a good time to consider protecting this often overlooked asset. For further details, please visit Newmoon's website https://www.newmooninsurance.com and click on the Vinyl Insurance section.

Shaun W Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 I've played in amateur bands on and off for the last 20 years and have used Newmoon to insure all of my guitars amps and accessories. I'm no a big time collector and rarely DJ but I've just added my record collection and £25k cover for £125 seems reasonable to me. Several years ago I had a problem when making a claim via my household policy. I thought I'd done everything correctly, called the Insurer on two or three occasions to discuss the items I owned and to confirm that they were actually insured a part of the household policy. The mistake I made was not obtaining written confirmation that I was actually covered, even though I believed it was agreed verbally. To cut a long story short I had a claim rejected because I occasionally received payment from playing in a band. Ultimately my fault for being naive, but an expensive lesson learnt. I'm not saying that you can't insure a record collection as part of your household policy but my experience is that they don't really understand the specialist nature and value of some of our hobbies. My advice would be to clearly write down exactly what you expect to be covered and to receive written confirmation that it is covered as per your expectations. Most insurers will probably run a mile when you explain to them that your collection is made up of several second hand 7 inch singles that are 40 to 50 years old, yet can be worth several hundred pounds each. It just makes sense to me to use a specialist Insurer for specialist equipment and hobbies.
