Andyf Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 "Love Bandit" makes me want to scream and scream until i am sick, also Loving On The losing Side drives me up the wall, del xx Yep I loathe Love Bandit as well. Another one that has me running to the bogs to throw up is Wake Up To The Sunshine Girl Rather like Shadows and Reflections, The Action's version knocks spots off the other one though.
Wiganer1 Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 What about Gary Lewis & The Playboys.Played at Wigan mid 70's.To this day I think its utter pop shite and whoever first played it should be shot. Dave even mr searling played this....
Guest Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 here's a few to get the ball rolling regrettably i can't find my brian hyland (i have got one somewhere) but get an earful of some of this nb all these tunes are available for sale if any deaf people are listening. Wigans Chosen Few - Footsee There really is no excuse. Were they the Rubettes in disguise? Ask him, he's on here. Were you the Rubettes, mate? Sherries - Put Your Arms Around Me. If you stop that horrible, pancake-flat catterwauling in my ear, love, I'll consider it. Otherwise, f*** off. Matt Parsons - Boogaloo Investigator Soul for Meteors and King Kurt fans. Billy Ocean - Red Light Spells Danger Why oh why oh why? Paul Humphey - Cool Aid I bought this many moons ago thinking it was Cool Off. Says a lot about me. Tim Tam and the Turn-Ons - Wait A Minute Whoever nominated this, good shout. It is worse than Brian Hyland. Can you imagine the state of mind of the DJ who first played this? I mean, really try to get inside his head. What the f*** was he thinking? Who was he, as a matter of fact? I've got a shotgun, I'll get it sorted. Dean Parrish - I'm On My Way Stop going on about it Dean...get on your bike. I know it's sacrilege, I like all his other stuff, he's a lovely bloke, wasn't he great at the 100 Club etc etc etc. Always hated all of the fucking '3 before 8' and this, with its horrible guitar, is vomitously bad. Big, pompous, camp, ballady crap for gay soulies. I reckon Winstanley did a deal with the casino owners - play these three and we'll clear them all out sharpish at close of play. Only it backfired on them as the thousands of Wigan freaks, nutted up to the eyeballs on so much gear they'd lost all sense of quality, lapped it all up like devil dogs. Not in my day, Russ. Ah, that feels better. OMG : You have ruined 30+ years of my life Footsie - The sound that finally got me to the casino Sherries - Was this or the little joe cook version the first record ever played at Wigan?? Mat Parsons was OK Billy Ocean needed shooting Tim Tam - At the time one of the bigest sounds around. The 3 before 8?? DAN wash your mouth out with soap!!! You had to be there to hear and feel what those three sounds meant!!!!! The last 3 records and the whole place dancing and clapping in time atmosphere of the highest order. What nowdays have we got to compare to it??? Thats a question for everyone that went to the Casino.

Epic Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Nightwatch - "Lips To Your Heart". 'Nuff Said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ged Parker Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Nightwatch - "Lips To Your Heart". 'Nuff Said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Andy can't believe you can't think of anything worse. It's white, it's pop but it's not as bad as some of the above. Not played this for years so my memory may be playing tricks on me but it was exactly right for the scene in '78 mind you '78 was maybe the worst wigan year .

Ged, I can think of something equally as nasty "My Life With You" - The Traditions. I have a a very low tolerance to naff pop records that are passed off as soul music. I have an antidote though - I just think about all the good stuff & then I don't feel so bad - beginning to sound like Julie Andrews now.
Pete S Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Ged, I can think of something equally as nasty "My Life With You" - The Traditions. Have you actually heard any Northern Soul records, because this is one of the best examples you could ever hear...
Supercorsa Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 (edited) On the Brink Matt Parsons - Boogaloo Investigator Soul for Meteors and King Kurt fans. Dan still likes his C/U's , obviously attended quite a few scooter runs in the 80's? We're the Wrecking Crew, gotta do......... Worst record - Dean Barlow's Third Window Edited October 20, 2005 by Supercorsa
steve z Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 surely its 'I'm a big man' for the worst record ever played? Shane Hi Shane, imagine posting up -The worst record ever played-which I have just sold to For massive dosh
Guest Dan Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Dan still likes his C/U's , obviously attended quite a few scooter runs in the 80's? We're the Wrecking Crew, gotta do......... Worst record - Dean Barlow's Third Window i remember djing for neil rushton aged 18 (me not neil) at (i think) morecambe in 1985/6 tripping my head off on some blotting paper acid i'd been given i was playing boogaloo investigator and all the skins and rockabilly twats were wrecking to it there was a little window behind the decks and me and my mate mark mortimer were standing on a chair looking out at the illuminations (must have been a late summer run) , going 'wow! unbelievable!' and someone came up and politely pointed out that the record had finished about a minute ago. had some great times on the rallies. but those days have gone.
Guest gibber Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Playing through some old tapes yesterday and "Shadows and Reflections" by The Lonely Crowde on MGM came on, what a bag of shi*e! How did such a crap record ever get played especially during a time when so many classics were around. Apart from sounds made for the scene is this the worst ever? PS. This books at £40 issue and £25 dj. How? BH I remember a record by twiggy ,played at the fleet .
Simsy Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 No the worst record ever without any doubt at all is the Four Chaps - Will you or won't you. Utter utter garbage, would rather listen to Jungle. I don't know that many people that have heard this. But I did see it in a list once and that idea that it should be considered as a collectable/desirable soul record, or possibly played out is ridiculous.
Epic Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Have you actually heard any Northern Soul records, because this is one of the best examples you could ever hear... I have heard plenty of Northern Soul records. I have also heard plenty of uptempo pop records. The knack is to distinguish one from the other.
Pete S Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 I remember a record by twiggy ,played at the fleet . "Beautiful Dreams" I have heard plenty of Northern Soul records. I have also heard plenty of uptempo pop records. The knack is to distinguish one from the other. Hope you get that knack one day then

My Life With You is another pop record that I quite like wouldn't dream of playing it out though - If your taking requests how about a rendition of 'the hills are alive'
Ged Parker Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 No the worst record ever without any doubt at all is the Four Chaps - Will you or won't you. Utter utter garbage, would rather listen to Jungle. Do you mean 'True Lovers' ? I love that maybe this thread demonstrates why the scene is like it is. Too many tastes too broad a spectrum of sounds people think of a 'northern' I don't think of TL as northern rather as rare soul even though it isnt rare Isn't this music we all love just the most bizaar yet facinating genre around
Guest Andy Kempster Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Dan still likes his C/U's , obviously attended quite a few scooter runs in the 80's? We're the Wrecking Crew, gotta do......... Worst record - Dean Barlow's Third Window thrown away our lives, killed our lovers and our wives.... what great lyrics, havent heard anyone mention the meteors or king kurt for eons
Epic Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 "Beautiful Dreams" Hope you get that knack one day then I don't like "My Sharona" either
Pete S Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 I don't like "My Sharona" either I didn't like it at the time but in retrospect it's a bit of a classic.

Ah, that feels better. That just proves that opinion in music is subjective ! I nominated Tim Tam but love the three ( even four) before eight not just for the pure nostalgia but as great tunes in their own right But that's just IMNSHO

Guest Kill_a_pig Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 The worst record played has to be "I'm a big man". Not just for what it sounds like but also for what it represents - RockABilly masquerading as RnB, thus making it acceptable on the scene. It also has the great effect (for those of you who like it) of keeping me away from the clubs. I always said that I would not go anymore if I didn't want to dance and these old shoes will never move to rock and roll. 'The second worst record ever played on the scene has to be Cherry People - And Suddenly. I was so puzzled when I first heard it at The Brickyard club in Mexborough and even more amazed that it packed the dancefloor.
Guest livelikeasailor Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Try the theme from the Fantastic Flying Plastic Machine by Harry Betts.

Quite a lot of the poppy seventies tunes had a sense of drama to them. Another example of a good poppy tune which had nothing to do with soul would be Lost Summer Love. It was however an important tune in it's day along with a hundred more I could list - Touch of Velvet anyone ? And what about all those crappy 100mph stomper instrumentals that the Casino dancers loved ?
Guest Soulfood33 Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Said it before... Larry Houston George Hobson George Lemmons Mike McDonald if it had to be just one...hard choice but Larry Houston if you think George Hobson is a bad record your visiting the wrong web sites

Ha! Classic! I always enjoyed Morecambe because they had that Beer Keller place where pissed-up scooter types would be serenaded by an accordion player doing his versions of various soul and reggae favourites. At least when he wasn't being interrupted every 5 mins by drunken idiots making 'announcements' like: "Ah, feggit. Feggin' scoo'er boyz, ya fugger. Fug-it!" Etc...

It's black, authentic, rhythm & blues from a Chicago label/group synonymous with great soul/r&b 45s that have been played for years on the northern scene. So do you also hate stuff like Bud Harper and Mickie Champion? Do you call those records rockabilly?! It's definitely the "right" side of R&B and can't possibly be compared to some of the other pap played that masquerades as R&B e.g Barbara Redd etc I could understand more if you didn't like it because it's been played a lot, but however you look at it, it's not rockabilly in the slightest. Makes you wonder how many tailor mades are waiting to be spun - 'one-offs' are now simple with the advent of home PC re-mixing/editing software.
