Guest Dan Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 as a not-very regular go-er out-er, i'm irrelevant so skip this post but if you give a monkey's, i think super-crowded venues are shite anyway. rammed 12 deep against a wall with nowhere to sit...what good's that for a fat, sweaty 38-year-old? the phrase 'it's gonna be a packer' always worries me. i am getting old, though.

Guest Jim. Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 I don't think people travel as much as they once did...maybe thats because they don't have to either, most places seem to have a "local" nighter nowadays. Myself, I have to travel more than ever I did, livin' in Sweden and all... When it comes to promoters I think the comunication is getting better. I was talking to the chap whose putting on the Leicester nighter at the weekend and he like (no doubt) all the other promoters planned this night over a year ago. I think that the new calender for next years events is a good tool that I hope people and promoters will will use...I know I will ...by the way, I'm told the Leicester dates will be posted up very soon (and as much care as possible has been taken not to clash!)

Guest ShaneH Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 ...still mills & boon! come on...lets try and keep it interesting for more than a couple of people please Shane
Guest in town Mikey Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 ...still mills & boon! come on...lets try and keep it interesting for more than a couple of people please Shane Probably not interesting, but I think we are in the advanced stages of a recession. High street stores are struggling even tho many shops seem to have sales 10 months of the year right now. House prices were moving way beyond sustainable growth. Although the lies printed in newspapers about just how much prices were increasing was laughable. (I could explain how its done but that would be even more boring than this post.) I even read today that Manchester United fans can pay on the gate for tonights game. I think its the first time ever that they have been able to do this in the Champions??? League. Which along with a 1/3 empty Stamford Bridge just a few weeks ago goes to show that people have less money in their pockets than they did, say, 5 years ago, and therefore have less disposable money to spend on entertainment. I know I do. 5 years ago I could go to approx 10-20 do's in London every month. Now I am lucky if I can afford to go to more than one. OK I have a mortgage now, but I am only paying £78 more than my last monthly rent was in London. Attendances will suffer for a few years IMO due to the social restraints placed on our 'spare' money. Add onto that the cost of fuel as well. More and more people that used to think little of driving past 10 do's to get to their favourite 300 miles away, will start to just go locally as the money saved on travel will be considerable. Sorry about that. But at least I spared you the way the Estate Agents manufacture house price headlines.
Simsy Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Downturn suggests there won't be an upturn. Don't think thats the case, I've known venues go through quiet patches and then go through periods where they're really busy. Ups and downs imo.

If you think about it, it's gone mad - if you want to buy a property - you have to pay over the top for one, but anyone realised that there are people who are buying more than one property and that is why prices go up, and then the Government give tax relief to them people!! Therefore joe public has to go further away from friends and family coz cant afford to live near them now. As for salaries, well they are either great or more so, low - due to the 'top ups' the government give so employers can keep wages low! The class divide is more so than ever but due to people just spending and getting in debt - its hiden. Employers can do what they like with employees as there aren't the unions to help like before as no one takes them seriously anyway! Sorry but this goes back to Thatcher's days - sorry Stuart T - I know you like her! Now off the Soap Box Anyway, back on thread, yes taking into consideration travelling expenses etc., it can be expensive to go out, but like me if you normally drink water most of the night, dont buy records (cant afford to!) and treat it as an 'exercise' night (dancing) - it can work out cheaper than joining a gym!
Guest the dukester Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 DID A MOTOWN NIGHT ON SATURDAY @ EASINGTON, FIRST ONE WE HAVE DONE AND FIGURES SUGGEST WE ARE GOING TO DO ANOTHER ONE (150+ IN ON THE NIGHT) EVERYTHING IN MODERATION

LOL you taunt me! You're quite right, we're stuffed, current government has bankrupted the country in a quite incredible fashion, and people now have to pay for it. Its going to be a rough one, perhaps early eighties without the easy get outs? As Mikey says, going to be hard on people going to clubs etc, I hope that house and record prices come right down . I think employees have more rights nowadays through the EU legislation than the corrupt unions ever achieved for them?

Guest in town Mikey Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 I'm sure James T will have a better insight into this than I do. I used to work on the inflation figure, so spent much of my time liasing with economists from the Bank of England. I still read their reporst and the occasional reply to a Parliamentary question. Its not looking too rosey in my view.

I think employees have more rights nowadays through the EU legislation than the corrupt unions ever achieved for them? Not all unions where corrupt! I come from a union family! Hopefully we wont see the 'bad old days' with the miners etc. as your 'girlfriend' did a good job on them! But I wish you were right about employees have more rights - in theory but you put it into practice! - I have experience of Employment Tribunal and its just like going to Court (unfortunately had experience of that too - not for any criminal activities!!) and I would imagine many would not bother as its a lengthy process! Btw hope did the tea/birthday party go?

Guest in town Mikey Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 re-opened freebasing: https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showforum=5 Sorry Mike I wasnt trying to make a political statement, just relating relevant factors to the discussion. I felt that any mitigating factors ie people's spending money would have a bearing on this thread. I know personally, the reason why i dont go out so much is financial, and also I make descisions about where I go accordingly. As we have been moved, can I now show you how average house prices are manufactured to look one way or another??

Guest ShaneH Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 karen, like i said earlier - mike added a link to the freebasing section where you can develop a new topic about politics etc in a more suitable thread. Mikey has done that so you can now go and add your bit. Shane

Winnie :-) Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Difficult to say whether there are more or less people on the scene nowadays, but there are definitely more venues. As said before, this means people have more choice, and don't have to travel. I have a feeling that most people are more comfortable with this, and also feel that less venues would definitely herald a downturn in numbers. Probably should have addressed this problem about 6/7 years ago, before so many decided to open up smaller venues. Seems everybody wants a piece of pie. Personally I don't mind if there are less punters at venues, you make the best of wherever you are, and of course less punters means more space, which means I can put water wherever I like without people grumbling

Guest Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 (edited) Is that similar to what goes on in the modern and crossdresser room? I have heard tales about the horrors that go on in such rooms Mind you crossdressers can look pretty good if its done right and they take the time to sort an outfit out that is suitable for their body shape Edited October 18, 2005 by KarenC
Ady Potts Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Can I be spanked as well Hello Karen, you can certainly have some of this at the Dome my dear, we aim to please!! hang on a minute, i'm on the wrong thread, i thought i was answering your request for some shite music, errm, sorry, errm my dinners ready, must go.
John May Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 I tend to think that Northern soul is a good barometer on the economy, during affluent times the secene does well, during time of recession it get's hit hard. In the early 80's the scene really struggled, also in the early 90's attendances were low, over the last 10years the scene has a whole has been well supported, however, there is has been a slow down in the economy over the last year, and it is predicted that next year we could be in a mini recession for the first time in over a decade, so I think the down turn in attendences recently is a sign of things to come........Maybe smaller venues in the short term is the way forward until things improve.

Guest Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 Judging by Bury on Friday John, I would have to disagree, the place was packed. But, maybe thats due to the fact that they only run one or is it two ? nighters a year.I think when a venue is on every month or so people don't always make the effort as they can always go 'next month'.

Guest Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 A down turn in attendance numbers compared to when? An upturn/downturn in house prices compared to what? More/less money compared to what? Need a new TV/washing machine/ record deck/microwave/car/ wife husband/dog/cat- ne one or get the old one fixed? Eugene Mc Daniels had it in three words. Compared to what ?
