Downturn In Event Attendances?

as a not-very regular go-er out-er, i'm irrelevant so skip this post

but if you give a monkey's, i think super-crowded venues are shite anyway. rammed 12 deep against a wall with nowhere to sit...what good's that for a fat, sweaty 38-year-old? the phrase 'it's gonna be a packer' always worries me.

i am getting old, though.

I don't think people travel as much as they once did...maybe thats because they don't have to either, most places seem to have a "local" nighter nowadays. Myself, I have to travel more than ever I did, livin' in Sweden and all...

When it comes to promoters I think the comunication is getting better. I was talking to the chap whose putting on the Leicester nighter at the weekend and he like (no doubt) all the other promoters planned this night over a year ago. I think that the new calender for next years events is a good tool that I hope people and promoters will will use...I know I will

Probably not interesting, but I think we are in the advanced stages of a recession.

High street stores are struggling even tho many shops seem to have sales 10 months of the year right now.

House prices were moving way beyond sustainable growth. Although the lies printed in newspapers about just how much prices were increasing was laughable. (I could explain how its done but that would be even more boring than this post.)

I even read today that Manchester United fans can pay on the gate for tonights game. I think its the first time ever that they have been able to do this in the Champions??? League. Which along with a 1/3 empty Stamford Bridge just a few weeks ago goes to show that people have less money in their pockets than they did, say, 5 years ago, and therefore have less disposable money to spend on entertainment.

I know I do. 5 years ago I could go to approx 10-20 do's in London every month. Now I am lucky if I can afford to go to more than one. OK I have a mortgage now, but I am only paying £78 more than my last monthly rent was in London.

Attendances will suffer for a few years IMO due to the social restraints placed on our 'spare' money. Add onto that the cost of fuel as well. More and more people that used to think little of driving past 10 do's to get to their favourite 300 miles away, will start to just go locally as the money saved on travel will be considerable.

Sorry about that. But at least I spared you the way the Estate Agents manufacture house price headlines.

Downturn suggests there won't be an upturn. Don't think thats the case, I've known venues go through quiet patches and then go through periods where they're really busy.

I'm sure James T will have a better insight into this than I do. I used to work on the inflation figure, so spent much of my time liasing with economists from the Bank of England. I still read their reporst and the occasional reply to a Parliamentary question. Its not looking too rosey in my view.

Not all unions where corrupt! I come from a union family! Hopefully we wont see the 'bad old days' with the miners etc. as your 'girlfriend' did a good job on them! But I wish you were right about employees have more rights - in theory but you put it into practice! - I have experience of Employment Tribunal and its just like going to Court (unfortunately had experience of that too - not for any criminal activities!!) and I would imagine many would not bother as its a lengthy process!

Difficult to say whether there are more or less people on the scene nowadays, but there are definitely more venues. As said before, this means people have more choice, and don't have to travel. I have a feeling that most people are more comfortable with this, and also feel that less venues would definitely herald a downturn in numbers.

Probably should have addressed this problem about 6/7 years ago, before so many decided to open up smaller venues. Seems everybody wants a piece of pie. Personally I don't mind if there are less punters at venues, you make the best of wherever you are, and of course less punters means more space, which means I can put water wherever I like without people grumbling

I tend to think that Northern soul is a good barometer on the economy, during affluent times the secene does well, during time of recession it get's hit hard. In the early 80's the scene really struggled, also in the early 90's attendances were low, over the last 10years the scene has a whole has been well supported, however, there is has been a slow down in the economy over the last year, and it is predicted that next year we could be in a mini recession for the first time in over a decade, so I think the down turn in attendences recently is a sign of things to come........Maybe smaller venues in the short term is the way forward until things improve.

Judging by Bury on Friday John, I would have to disagree, the place was packed.

But, maybe thats due to the fact that they only run one or is it two ? nighters a year.I think when a venue is on every month or so people don't always make the effort as they can always go 'next month'.

We've been in a recession for years John Public spending is up but thats only because of Credit cards, loans and intrest free credit ect, ect .....
