Guest ShaneH Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I would be interested to know opinions/facts on the attendances at soul nights/allnighters this year. I heard that the Kings Hall was quieter than usual at the weekend. In my experience in recent months I think a lot of venues have been quieter than last year. Maybe one or two can confirm? Are we experiencing a downturn in numbers or is it the fault of too many events? Have the weekenders done better this year? Shane
Guest Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I think there are too many things on at the same time.Look at this weekend, as already said in another thread 4 all nighters on the same saturday ! Not only will they all suffer lower numbers, but so will the soul nights on that night and quite possibly anything that is on Friday night as well, really stupid planning IMHO
Guest ShaneH Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I think most will agree that there is sometimes too many events but have the actual numbers of people who are active on the scene reduced too? Shane

Shane Shane speaking from a promoters view point Winsford has been steadily improving since i became involved 2 yrs ago. We are now getting between 250 / 300. Not for one minute saying its because i,m involved with it. But because of the the hard work and countless miles covered promoting the Nighter. I have noticed one or two venues are suffering due to lack of numbers. I think its down to a far wider choice of clubs available and clash of dates thats causing the drop in attendances Steve
Guest Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I think most will agree that there is sometimes too many events but have the actual numbers of people who are active on the scene reduced too? Shane I don't think so, as some leave to do other things for whatever reasons, others return, but with the amount of watered down events going on now it's going to seem there are less about!

Shane Ive been wondered the same i.e. heard Stoke was down, but Hemsby was on. There does seem to be many weekenders and I have to admit I have been to couple of weekenders (week for Soul in the Sun) and they have been good. Im mixed on this, yes its good more and more on so more variety/choice, etc. But if all on at same time, then all will suffer and people will be split on where to go. I do think that everyone who runs an event needs to try and check out (as much as possible) that doesnt clash, I understand this can be difficult if having to book in advance but a lot seem to try and have set dates i.e. first or end of month. Im not a promoter so Im just speaking from what I would do if I was.
Guest waynec Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 down south the amount of folks on the scene has steadily dropped over about the last 4 years. probably a lot more noticable now with the number off do,s on. have noticed that a lot of folks stay local as well. maybe if you have 4 or 5 do,s on within a reasonable distance of youre home theres no need to travel that far anymore. seams the only nites now that are real busy are first nites, anniversary,s or final nites. maybe thats the answer.do,s should only run for 3 events.garranteed a packer at each
Guest Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I think your right about people staying localish.I travel a reasonable amount up and down the country. To say there is a hard core of travellers is fair.I notice certain people only at do's up north and some only at do's down south.Sometimes you get people travel from one to the other but it is usually for a first night with a big hype. From my point of view, I have to travel as there simply isn't anything local but I feel I gain from this by seeing different people and hearing very different sounds. But, I can only be in one place at a time and so therefore need to make choices as to which event to attend, if there are two or three nighters on any given night then I will chose either the one most of my mates are going to be at or the one with the best IMO DJ line up.
SteveM Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I don't think so, as some leave to do other things for whatever reasons, others return, but with the amount of watered down events going on now it's going to seem there are less about! Whats a ' Watered down Event' Janine ?
Guest Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Whats a ' Watered down Event' Janine ? My guess is watered down drinks, water down on the floor, am I close?

Cant speak for Soul Night Promoters but all the Peolpe who run the Nighters have got together and between us we think, have managed to post dates that dont clash. Its easy for us lot but people that run soul nights dont have the flexiblity that we have because there is only a handful of us running Nighters.
SteveM Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 My guess is watered down drinks, water down on the floor, am I close? Aah. Poor standard ladies toilets ? Now I understand.
Guest Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Aah. Poor standard ladies toilets ? Now I understand. . . . and I was talking about the dance floor! think thats normally for the mens isn't it!? (of course not that I would know only what I've been told!)

(of course not that I would know only what I've been told!) The toilets at Ponds Forge are appalling. I went in there once, and two guys were saying what a crap dj I was

Guest waynec Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 maybe watered down means plenty of do,s with low numbers. does seam these days that theres more promoters and dj,s around than punters. new promoters certainly need to think about putting on do,s these days. with only so many folks around a few do,s have got to dissapear soon. karenc agree with youre points.our nearest do is 30 minutes drive away but thats part of the nite out, driving round getting lost
SteveM Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 As Dave Rimmers already stated on here, Samanthas booked over a year ago.

Guest ShaneH Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 moldie, i hope you aint going to send this thread off on a mad rollercoaster ride again? no one is being personal so far. it is just a general discussion of the current state of the scene with regards to attendances. Shane
Guest waynec Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 shane apart from being grim up north whats the state of the scene like
Guest Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 i feel im being victimised....no body loves me I do, your a true gent and the only one who was prepared to carry me to and from the toliets/dancefloor the other week by the way I am expecting the same treatment this weekend shane apart from being grim up north whats the state of the scene like Bit of an unfair question as shane doesnt go to every do up north so cant comment generally on the scene
Guest ShaneH Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 shane apart from being grim up north whats the state of the scene like slighty off topic but we are having a comedy festival in Sheffield very soon called 'grin up north'. The places I go to are still quite busy. My regular haunts are ponds forge, soul or nothing, greatstone, wilton and the odd allnighter at places like middleton/crewe/manchester. I will be at the next 100 club too. Shane
Supercorsa Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 (edited) water down on the floor, am I close? That would be where Winston was dancing! Edited October 17, 2005 by Supercorsa

Md Records Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 One reality is that many, many people want to get up there, DJ and play the music they love, and in some cases spent loads of dosh on, and if they aint given an oppurtunity to do this, they start their own event. If you satisfy part of this hunger, for people to have a go, then you might reduce the number of events. This is not the only factor, obviously, but it's one to think about. Des
Guest ShaneH Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Shane, make your mind up mate yeah yeah dave still busy but not as busy is the way i should have explained it. Shane

Des totally agree with this. i have thought this was the case for many soul nights before. I dont think there are many promoters out there who choose not to DJ. Shane
SteveM Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 i feel im being victimised....no body loves me Just a general comment Moldie. If I was having a go at you I would have put on a crash helmet and gum shield As an aside, I live in the village where VicG comes from Steve
SteveM Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I dont think there are many promoters out there who choose not to DJ. Shane As you don't go everywhere, how can you possibly make a general statement like that ?

Guest Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 OK, I take back every word I said, you go ahead and tell everyone what the soul scene is like up North You are being paranoid. Not everybody hates you Alternatively you can just be childish

Chalky Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I think most will agree that there is sometimes too many events but have the actual numbers of people who are active on the scene reduced too? Shane well I haven't been out for two weeks
Soulsmith Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Just looked at the photos from Stoke and was suprised how quiet it was. col
Eamesy Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Just looked at the photos from Stoke and was suprised how quiet it was. col *************************************** If thats a photo of the live act at the next Stoke, I should think it will be even emptier!! Alan
Guest dundeedavie Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 i think a lot of events are very similar musically so there isn't any need to go out every week .... maybe people should think about varying the sound and coming up with a sound of their own ... that way if you wanna hear that type of sound you have to go to that club .. D
Guest Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Was i at a different Stoke nighter on Sat?? The place was packed and the dancefloor full. Is it normally buisier than that?? This was my first time since the 30th Anniversary do so maybe im being a bit picky. I for one thoroughly enjoyed meself.

TheBigO Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Numbers have been down at the Plinston this year from 300+ to an average 200/250. Fro all accounts of my mates that do events every wekend that's been the norm for most venues this past year on the whole. IMHO it's a number of reasons, too many venues chasing too few punters, more weekenders than ever on, old age!!! The weather. 2006 will see if this is a blip or a worrying trend for the scene.

When Stoke is busy you almost have to fight for a place on the dance floor. It wasn't like that on Saturday. There was loads of dance floor space. Stoke is still one of my favourite places though. Even on a relatively quiet night there is still an excellent buzz in there. Col.
