Guest Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 The best gig ever at the Casino had to be Jnr Walker AMAZING but thats my opinion and the worst was Ann Peebles

Guest in town Mikey Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Exiters bit overrated,Junior Walker-better at the Torch! Betty Wright was brilliant at Wigan. Tommy Hunt was blinding on a weekly basis. But the best live act had to be Denis Lee in his bowler hat Steve Dennis was also pretty amazing on stage with Gene Chandler at Stafford. One of his kicks nearly took Gene's nose off. He was painting the office where a friends mum worked a short while back. When I found out I got Margaret to try to persuade Dennis to show off his moves, and can you believe she said he was too shy

Got to say for me Jnr Walker was the best i seen at the Casino, Was one the hundreds locked out for the Betty Wright gig so cant comment but everyone i spoke to afterwards said it was Brilliant, So many artists done the casino, one of the worst for me was the Elgins but thats just my own opinion

Yes, Exciters show was good. I'd already seen Betty Wright midweek in Reading so didnt watch the show at Wigan, stayed in Mr Ms. Jackie Wilson was disappointing, although a privilege to see him live, Jr. Walker was very good, saw him twice in one week, Edwin Starr always good too. Got a nice old black & white photo of Jackie Wilson at Wigan, which i will try & scan & post in gallery later. Mate from Newbury managed to get him to autograph his copy of Who Who Song, which he still has. Good topic mate, seen some good funk acts aswell, not at Wigan obviously!!

Thanks Nick ******************************************************************************** **************** Nick, I'm sure Jon didnt mean anything by the "Africans" remark. I met Osibisa when they did a pa in a pub in Reading, about 1975/76 ish. Seem to remember them as nice guys and ex. performers. As Bucky says California Ballroom at Dunstable had good live acts,. recall seeing Crown Heights Affair there, 1978 I think, fantastic show, then went on to Yate all nighter-great weekend. Alan
Tomangoes Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Never mind 'blowin up my mind'. At 14 'Reaching for the best' was the best record ever to get introduced to manufactured Northern Soul. Brilliant, as were the exciters who did many live shows at the time. Ed

Pete S Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I liked it best when the artists didn't turn up, but Jr Walker was definitely the best I saw at Wigan. Martha reeves was pretty good too. Anyone remember seeing 'The Chants' at the 3rd anniversary and nobody knew who they were?

Best thing about live act nights was the extra 2 hours!

Anyone remember seeing 'The Chants' at the 3rd anniversary and nobody knew who they were? They were dire, remember people sitting down on the floor......I didnt realise it was The Chants Wasnt it a last minute booking to cover a' no show' (Tavares(?))?.........Or was that just a silly rumor of the time that I'm daft enough to still belive?
