Today's Soulful Sound Of Detroit

Today's Soulful Sound Of Detroit magazine cover

It's always nice when a Record Promoter involves you in some pre-release tracks and that's what Dave Thorley did about four or five years ago when he handed me a local release CD of new music out of Detroit.

Now, some two years later, Dave & Malayka have managed to release not only tracks from that original CD but with the help from Detroit writer and arranger Tim King, have pulled together a great mix of sounds.

The stand out track was and still is The Funk Factor's "Give it What Cha Got" but it's a close runner with the likes of Faschone - "Come Inside", Forte - "Anytime You Need Love" and Anita Marie Hill's "Our Flame".

Modern Soul, R&B through 2step and love ballads, this album offers a great insight to the music being produced locally on theWestside of the city. From the sleevenotes you can clearly see this has gone through the hands of some notable Producers and Arrangers, seven in total and well over twenty musicians; it's goes to show the studio time these guys have put into the album.

Dave say's there's two format's that the album is available; LP and CD with the LP being a limited run, so for the vinyl addicts its best to get in touch with Dave at www.topdogrecords.co.uk as quick as possible, cos these are gonna sell.

Happy listening

Steve Lloyd

Thanks Steve for the kind words, this has been a bit of a labour of love and I have mention this project on here before. But now at long last the limited press vinyl LP has left the pressing plant and is currently waiting to clear customs as I write. Planned release date is about the second week on june and it will be availble from ourselves, that nice man Fish, Gary Dennis and a few others. Here's a little more about the project.

' Todays Soulful Sound Of Detroit'

Is a project we got involved in a couple of years ago in Detroit, the end result is this LP. This has been a labour of love for all parties involved, produced on a limited budget with many giving their time free, just to make it happen. This LP shows that Detroit still has 'Soul' and an abundance of talent in the city. The 'Powerhouse behind this project has been song writer/arranger Tim King, who pulled together artists and musicians who live in the neighbour hoods near him on the westside of the city to record a cool selection of tracks. He also called upon the skills of legendary producer Clay McMurray (Thelma, Motown, Undisputed Truth) to assist in pulling all the elements together. All the material on this set is new and never before released, with the exception of 'Funk Factor's, Give It What Cha Got', which did appear on an earlier CD incarnation of the project and was the single piece of music that got us hooked and involved. The lead singer on this, is one Gerald Mallory of 80's 'Lay it down on me' fame This track has already been getting rave reviews, from those we have sent demos to and killer dance floor reaction ever time it's played out.The album includes a cool mix of styles, Steppers, Ballads, Uptempo Dancers and R&B Flava's.

We look forward to your support in the promotion of this 'Labour Of Love', which is our way of putting a little back into a musical city that has given many of us so much.
