Mike Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 The Guardian website features an interesting news article .Plans for a forthcoming motown based musical! And more interestingly to me a report on New York Times claims about the long running Marvin Gaye film saga Berry Gordy, the 81-year-old founder of Motown Records, is reportedly developing an autobiographical musical with a planned budget of $100m (£61m). While Gordy seems keen on a musical about his label, the New York Post alleges he has blocked attempts to turn the life of one of his biggest stars, Marvin Gaye, into a film. Though director Julien Temple is now working on a biopic of the singer, Gordy has been "quietly blocking the scripts and music because he doesn't want his name dragged through the mud", claimed a source. "[He] basically owns the rights to the Marvin Gaye story." full article can be read here https://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/may/20/motown-records-berry-gordy-musical
Agentsmith Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 you know mike, it seems somewhat contrite of mr. gordy to believe someone ISNT going to do it long after he's rolled over so, bearing in mind NO-ONE lives forever, why dosnt he just embrace it and face facts that hanging out some dirty linen in the process REALLY isnt going to cause any great reverberations decades after they supposedly took place. he cant turn back the clock and put right what he fears even if it was possible and who on earth really cares...its not gonna influence or interest the scribes at hello! magazine is it?. a biopic portrayal of one of gordy's most enigmatic protogee's would be a welcome addition to all of our libraries if it is filmed true to the context of the character's life....it wouldn't be deemed true to life if the nuts and bolts of dirt dishing weren't included and lets face it,..marvin didnt exactly walk "the straight path" himself let alone references to the most important people in his career. as for a lavish musical celebration of a historical landmark label, is he intent on coming up with young people you bear a striking resemblence to his stars, in an attempt to give an audience a "down the years" view of how the stars matured to become the global phenomenon they are today and, of course, will it actually include the real heroe's we have come to revere and love during our own lifetimes. now if thats what he intends to do....that would DEFINITELY be worth seeing and possibly your "dancing in the streets tour" would be consigned to the backburner.
