PRODUCED BY: DELANIEUR

ARRANGED BY: CHARLES WRIGHT

WRITTEN BY: LEONARD JEWELL SMITH (LEN JEWELL).

DESCRIPTION: HERE'S THE MISSING & TOTALLY UNKNOWN TERI DE... 001!! OVER THE YEARS I'VE COME ACROSS A FEW RARE NORTHERN SOUL 45'S... BUT IN ALL HONESTY THIS RECORD IS BY FAR THE RAREST AND MOST EXCITING FIND I HAVE EVER HAD. IT'S SAFE TO SAY THAT THIS JOHNNY LINCOLN 7" 45RPM IS THE ONLY COPY KNOWN TO EXIST. NO ONE HAS EVER HEARD OF IT OR EVEN KNEW IT EXISTED UNTIL I FOUND THIS COPY.

AFTER LISTENING TO THIS RECORD... THE DISTINCTIVE LEAD VOCALS APPEAR TO BE NONE OTHER THAN LEN JEWELL, BUT CREDITED AS 'JOHNNY LINCOLN'! PLEASE JUDGE FOR YOURSELF, BUT I THINK YOU'LL AGREE WITH ME ONCE YOU'VE TAKEN A LISTEN.

HISTORY: AS YOU COLLECTORS ALREADY KNOW... TERI DE RECORDS WAS A LOS ANGELES, CA BASED LABEL BACK IN THE LATE 1960'S THRU TO THE EARLY 70'S, AND WAS OWNED / OPERATED BY THE LEGENDARY PRODUCER / SONG WRITER / ARTIST; LEONARD JEWELL SMITH.

DUE TO IT'S REPUTATION OF QUALITY & RARITY; 'TERI DE' HAS BECOME A HIGHLY DESIRABLE LABEL... THE FIRST SIX RELEASES (001 TO 006), ALL BEING AS RARE AS HENS TEETH, ARE MOST WANTED BY COLLECTORS. TERI DE'S FOUNDER (LEONARD JEWELL SMITH) RECORDED & RELEASED A CUT ON THE LABEL CALLED BETTIN' ON LOVE, BACKED WITH WONDERFUL BABY (TERI DE 004), AND TO THIS DATE ONLY A COUPLE OF COPIES HAVE EVER SURFACED, GIVING IT THE RIGHT POSITION AS BEING THE RAREST RELEASE ON THE 'TERI DE' LABEL... UNTIL NOW.

IT'S SAFE TO SAY THAT THIS 45 UP FOR AUCTION IS THE ONLY COPY KNOWN TO EXIST. FOR MANY YEARS, COLLECTORS HAVE SCRATCHED THEIR HEADS OVER WHAT "001" COULD BE, AND HAVE ASSUMED THE FIRST SIX RELEASES HAD PALE PINK LABELS. EVERY TERI DE DISCOGRAPHY HAS EITHER A BLANK SPACE OR A BUNCH OF ???? NEXT TO 001...

SO HERE IT IS... MISSING NUMBER MYSTERY IS NOW SOLVED...

TERI DE RECORDS (001-006)

Nice find but is it really Trei-De 001?

The label appears to state 506, a different series perhaps linked to another label? Highland?

IT'S A MONARCH PRESS, LOOKS LIKE A HUNDRED OTHER MONARCH DISTRIBUTED LABELS, PROBABLY USED A DIFFERENT PRESSING PLANT FOR THE FIRST RELEASE. THIS RELEASE MAYBE EVEN STYRENE

Well done Tommy.

Tell you what though it sounds very similar to Jewell & The Rubies "Kidnapper" (La Louisianne) local then (ABC) national.

To my ears the Teri De intro is a straight lift.

Thought I'd plunder Refosoul to back up my observation and was suprised not to find any clips of Jewell's song.

If I get chance tommorrow - and I remember - I'll post up a clip of "Kidnapper" for your comparison.

Love the lyrics as it name drops stars of the day all the way through the song - Perry Mason and The FBI to name but two.

Derek,

Both sides are also done by Jimmy Norman on Polo.

hey up Craig - just to be clear - do ya mean both of the songs done by Johnny Lincoln on Teri De were also recorded by Jimmy Norman?

Also to save time here's a YouTube link to Jewel & The Rubies "Kidnapper on La Louisianne, which apparently came out in 1963 and never dented the American Top 40 charts.

Yeah my ears reckon somebody was being a bit liberal cutting and pasting back in 1963.

What do you think?

Looked into this and Jimmy Norman did infact do a version of both sides but on Hot Line. It's a totally different recording, totally different artist. Thank you for sharing that, it's much appreciated.

So i wonder what the connection is between the Teri De & the Hot Line 45s?

Had quite a few e-mails so far regarding this record... mostly 'well done for finding it' messages (which are very much appreciated) lol. But don't be shy people... trades are possible aswell, i know it's hard times. So you all know where we stand so far....

CURRENT HIGHEST OFFER IS $500.00.
