I was thinking of selling a few records and the consensus of opinion was to stick them up on ebay. Ebay occasionally send out emails promoting free listing and I was wondering if it’s as easy and hassle free as they claim? What are the main pit falls I should be aware of? Also:

Ebay or only ebay.co.uk?

How many days for the listing?

Starting price & any reserve price?

Paypal and getting your hands on the actual cash?

Thanks in advance

Simon

most use e-bay.com I think but them again most view several. Select the ship worldwide option, your auctio item will then be shown on alol the ebay sites..

as for starting price or reserve depends how much the record is worth and what you are prepared to let it go for, there is a charge for reserve price listing.

Days - select the length of time you require, standard is 7 days.

You can also select method of payment, cash, paypal, cheque, bakers draft etc. There is a charge for paypal. Go to ebay, there is a comprehensive "help" guide to listing your record.

I think the worst thing you can do IMVHO is start the record off at a higher price, and put a reserve on it, seems alot of people dont get the 'Bidding bug' on items like that, every one is after a bargin and will attract more intrest, if its quite an indemand item then should have no probs gettin what you want for it start low and let them fight for it

Make sure it finishes in the evening UK time as most of the buyers will be from hear I have bought a few things cheap because they finished when most are at work

Sunday evening the best

List as a 10 day auction on Thurday evening (8.00 p.m. approx) so it will end at the sime time on a Sunday evening, but you get 2 full weekends for buyers searching from home p.c's. plus over a full working week from those that search from work.

Use as many key words in title as possible...words that will help searchers to find it.

Accept paypal payments if possible - some buyers may want to buy from credit card if finances are tight that week, so paypal allows this.

Best of luck.

Regards,

Mace.

Just out of curiosity Simon what records are you thinking of selling, there maybe folk on here with a few quid in their back pocket willing to relieve you of your records.

From £2 pressing to 3 figure items. I've recently had a flick through the collection and I've got quite a few duplicates, some on both issue and demo, vinyl & styrene, slightly different label designs, East coast & West etc etc; as they're sitting in a lock up in a different part of the country I thought I might as well liberate them! Don't DJ and very rarely play them, so might let go other stuff as well. They're 60's, 70's modern, but not many R&B. A few mouldy albums, 12's & UK too. Overpriced crap that this week flavour like Machine that I can't ever remember buying or ever playing. About 20 or 30 Blue Rock tracks.

Thought about buying a price guide and doing a set sale, but I don't think they're very accuarate and realistic. Could annoy everyone by posting up a few 'what is worth' posts or just annoy everybody by listing them for offers on here! Any thoughts? Stick on ebay, send them to Manship, leave them on the shelf or have some fun on Novemeber 5th..........

Bearing in mind a recent post about people giving first refusal to fellow Soul Sourcers, I'll probably put them on here and then try out ebay, when nobody wants them!

Have you a list? Try your luck on here first, cheaper option if you get what you want.

Agree with Chalky, stick 'em up on here for a week or so and see how you go.

From my experience I'd say eBay is used as a kind of wholesale market, where people bid wholesale prices in the main. Its an almost guaranteed sale, which is why I use it because I need the cash, but you do get lower prices than if you set your own prices on a forum like this, or do your own list. I'd just bear that in mind.

Other than that key tips are, as Chalky recommends, make it end Sunday evening - that way you cover all the international markets on the day when most blokes are online 'checking the price of gas'. If you can get good scans and soundclips too, they do make a difference.
