Anyone seen the copy of demanding man on ebay that sold for $650? It was nuts, he had an audio clip and you could barely hear the music. I was thinking of bidding, thinking maybe it was dirty and I could get it to play better. I emailed the seller asking if it was dirty and he said that it was clean and that he cleaned it several times. The auction also said there was nice gloss. If a record that played that bad has nice gloss it has to be covered with deep scratches. Also, he has a negative feedback from an apparent previous listing of the record where he listed it as VG+ and the buyer said it was G-. It certainly sounds as bad or worse than any G- record I've heard. I don't understand what anyone buying it would think they could do with it, you can't DJ with that thing, it's not even an enjoyable home listen.

It sounds like the copy I bought, it was appalling & I sent it straight back, I also had the devil of a job getting my money back too, had to get ebay involved in the end, but fortunately on the very last day for a dispute 'she' refunded my money. The audio was that bad you could barely hear the music I was very disappointed & upset, to the point where I would have jumped on a plane, I shit ye not..........& there was no gloss, it was the roughest record I have ever seen for sale, there is no way in a million years that the seller could not know this record was absolutly trashed, then the c*nt added that bit to her feedback about the buyer not being able to afford to pay & some other bollox aswell..................really wish I had posted summat on SS now, but was back in Baghdad & work kinda took over events.........BTW I paid a lot more than $650 too..........scum bag !.

BTW there was no audio when it was first listed if it is the same copy, which it sounds like it is.

Do you have a link ?.

it's definitely the record you bought:

I guess it makes sense that there's no gloss and the seller was lying, I don't know how a glossy record could sound like that even if covered with deep scratches. I can't believe they graded it even higher when they sold it to you.

I'm not being funny or anything, just making an observation. But there are so many of you guys on here complaining regularly about eBay, I do wonder why you bother with it? Seems to me like it provides a villains' charter. Long gone are the days when I would be paying the sort of money the Sensations fetches, but why on earth would anyone in the name of sanity wish to part with several hundred pounds (or more) to complete strangers for goods they have never seen and clearly cannot always on the other side of the planet?

I'm not saying anybody deserves to get ripped off - far from it. I just don' tknow why you endorse this eBay thing. Seems they always win and their customers frequently get the bums rush.

There must be a better mousetrap, surely?

man, i love ebay. i get so many great records off there for such great prices. if i had a kid i would name them ebay. but i definitely think everyone else should stay off...

Nope. There is no other record selling website that gets the traffic & sheer volume of stock to choose from. They have the market & are so ingrained into the face of record dealing that it will not change. The alternatives, discogs which is clumsy & pretty slow in general for soul. Gemm which is woefully outdated & you essentially find records which are "out of stock" (then turn up on ebay the next week). Paying top price to online or in person dealers. Spending a lot of time/legwork/money chasing records in the real world.

Me, for the most part I'd rather sit on my couch, with the laptop & a cup of coffee & nab deals/steals off ebay. I'm not saying ebay is perfect, they are downright crappy in some aspects of their business but they pretty much have the market cornered.

Thats the seller.........wish I had seen it, I would have posted something on here..........who ever the buyer is, they will be gutted, cos from what I remember the sound was even worst than on that soundfile & thats the truth.............

The same seller sold a copy of the Foreign Blue Renaisance a couple months ago. It was graded VG+ as well, no sound file. I wonder how that turned out?

Posted

Just an observation there 8 bidders willing to bid after hearing that sound file are they that desperate to own it  theres a lot of static on it as well which never ever cleans up.

Posted

I knwo you only see the run out groove in the pic but it does look reasonably glossy and the label looks decent.

but one very quick listen to the clip tells me its in very bad shape. Possibly $40 or $50 filler copy but thats all. The vocals can be hard quite well but the crackle and hiss is very strong and constant.

Once you get an mp3 and a photo to judge a record by any text becomes pretty much meaningless IMO.

Recprd grading will continue to be a very subjective thing in spite of retty accurate descriptions of what each grade should be.

Hi Bob.......the buyer could have a carver cut from a good quality mp3 ....play it and if anyone asks WTF he's doing

Pull out his original and say " i want to preserve my original copy"

Method in the madness

Answer to question A) $1700

B) https://cgi.ebay.com/...RK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

Nearly spilt my cuppa T when i saw the end price ...that was before i played the clip

Fookin 'ell, I wouldn't bid $65 for that let alone add a zero!!! You actually struggle to hear the record in places because of the noise.

Amazes me why so many play top whack for fu&ked records!! Certainly can't blame the seller.

FBR cheap IMO, very rare record and lots chasing it.

I think i was justified in the extreme to blame the seller mate, when this was first listed it was graded higher & there was no sound file, the scan also makes the label look better than it actually is & on the reverse there is serious felt tip.......

I would also add that on my Technics this was almost inaudible through the noise & trust me, there was no gloss, it was dull & looked like it had been used to skate around the back yard on, the run out groove does look reasonable in the scan, but when you get the record in the flesh it is completely trashed & as I stated in my feed back would barely grade G-, I have never seen a more poorly graded record in my life & whilst this time there was a sound file, so no excuse really, it should never be up for auction, I wouldnt give that away to my worst enemy !!!.

If all that wasnt enough the woman was completely obstructive with a refund & I had to take it to ebay to get my money back, then the b*tch lied when replying to my feedback......

Anyone who deals with this seller in the future beware, I would personally avoid like the plague, not worth the hassle.

I always take vg to be fooked Russ to be honest and I am always wary of buying when graded as vg. Has the page been altered to vg? But I wouldn't have neded any sales pitch, scan or grading, the sound file would have put me off straight away.

I totally disagree with this. A "G" record can play mint, that doesn't make it mint. A photo of the label which may be clean (as in this case where it was specifically misleading) doesn't reveal the real condition of the vinyl. In fact, no photo can reveal the condition of the vinyl (you need to look at it closely in light to grade it) but some higher resolution ones can at least give you some idea.

When it was listed previously it was graded at VG+ & there was no sound file - I took a punt as its a disc I have wanted for many years, the description was totally misleading - mate ya wanna see some of the communication (when there was any communication) it was laughable, if there had been the sound file & the later very slightly more accurate grade when it was relisted no way would I have gone any where near it.

My apologies there Russ, definitely the seller in your case, I was going by the details, scan and sound file in the link Nev posted. I will say a better scan should have been provided showing the vinyl but like I said the sound file should be enough to put anyone off.

Had to laugh when BobA said you couldn't DJ with it. If that had been listed by some it would have said ok for DJing with

No worries mate - think I played it to Disco Dave Abbott round my gaff before I returned it, not sure if Dave would remember what it sounded like now, but at the time I was gutted, but still raised a smile at Daves expression when he heard it  .

with a photo and an mp3 you have enough info to make a judgement on how much you want to bid. All i'm realy sayting is if i've got those 2 pieces of info it makes any text description quite secondary.

I wasn't suggesting an mp3 gives you the visual condition of the vinyl but at least you can hear exactly what sound quality you will be getting.

AGREED, BOBA, THIS RECORD IS ABSOLUTELY FUKCED, AND STILL THE LATEST BUYER HAD A SOUND CLIP TO GO BY...SOME PEOPLE MUST BE REALLY DESPERATE FOR WHAT IS IN MHO IS A TOTALLY ORDINARY TUNE.

Your opinion about the quality of the tune is irelevant Bri, I bought this when it was first listed, the description was deliberatly misleading with no sound file & regardless of whether you like it or not thats wrong - I'm sure there are records you buy that I wouldnt give you the time of day over, but I wouldnt want you to be ripped off by the seller........

I care a lot about the conditon of my records and always buy a good a copy as possible within my budget.

but would certainly not rule out a rough looking copy of a very rare record as long as it played well and the price was knocked down accordingly.

OKAY THEN RUSS, WIND YOUR NECK IN  , MAYBE MY OPINION ABOUT THE RECORD WASN'T WARRENTED, BUT I DON'T RECALL GIVING YOU A PERSONAL GOING OVER FOR BUYING THE RECORD AS YOU DIDN'T HAVE A SOUNDFILE, SURE I MENTIONED THE SECOND BUYER WHO DID HAVE THE SOUNDFILE.

Boba,

Just a point that confused me ; You commented that "A "G" record can play mint," - don't see how that can so.

Isn't a visually graded record - one with surface marks, scratches and visible groove wear - hence G - by definition not going to be Mint when played ? Isn't that the point of grading ?

If I missed the point, let me know

For the Sensations record sold, as the Seller did a sound clip, he could have done a label visual grade and a vinyl PLAY grade...no real need for him to do just a visual

I definitely own a few 45s which look a bit rough but for some reason the marks seem to be all surface & once the stylus gets down in the groove, seemingly past the wear, the sound is still as good as a Mint 45. I don't see how this is a mystery? It's a reasonable occurence. Visually looks "Good", Aurally sounds "Mint", it happens occaisionally.

THINK BOB STATED THAT HE TOTALLY DISAGREED WITH A STATEMENT THAT SOMEBODY SAID THAT A G CONDITION RECORD CAN PLAY AS MINT, KEV.

yes, this is what I was saying, I agree and don't see what's so complicated. Some visually mint records play terrible due to terrible pressings and some trashed records play without noise. If a record is visually G and plays perfectly, it's still "G" though, it could play mint. Also, why would that seller give a play grade if they have the audio clip that reveals all the information about play. What's not possible is to reveal all the information about the visual condition as even high-res pictures don't reveal anything, that's why you need a visual grade.

Posted

no, I actually was saying that a "G" record CAN play as mint. Doesn't make the grade "mint" though.
