purist Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 I'm not sure if there was more than one group that used the name BLACK MAGIC but the one I'm interested in is the one which contained Marva Holiday (a.k.a.Mary Holiday) and Jerry Peters, both of whom have had records spun on our scene as solo artists of course. I've found info on an album on ATCO recorded in the late 60's, which didn't get released until early 1970. I remember a disco era poppy soul dance number on AVCO "Hey Boy Come & Get It" ( think this was an answer song to her girl ?) WHICH DID QUITE WELL IN THE NIGHT CLUBS IN THE MID 70'S, but didnt AVCO have a group called BLUE MAGIC. Was Blue a spin off group from Black ? Has anybody got a line up for Blue Magic ? any help gratefully recieved

Guest marva Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Hi, this is Marva :-) - We started writing the songs in '68, were in the studio recording summer of '69 and the record was released in '70 (though I was no longer a group member). We were signed to Atco which a division of Atlantic Records. Sonny & Cher Bono were our executive producers and the guys in the band were their rhythm section who backed them up in their Vegas show. The group members were myself (Marva Holiday), Joyce Overman dba Niggy D'Oberoff (aka the black Twiggy),, Anita Poree, Jerry Peters, Greg Poree and Wayne Douglas. Jerry and Greg remained active in the business over the years. In fact Greg is a band member on "Dancing With The Stars." --Anita is more of an artist/poet now. Niggy acted for awhile but I believe she and her husband are retired. Wayne joined the corporate world years ago. -- I continued to write and sing gospel, while raising children, but am now writing again and slowly recording new music. -- We only had the one LP on Atco. I believe Blue Magic signed with Atco a few years after we did and of course had a slew of hits.... There is an extensive write up on our LP ("Echoes of Love") at a blog called Funk My Soul and a couple of the songs ("Miss Jessie" and "Tater Man") are on youtube. Hope this helps :-)
Guest marva Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 P.s. - The album was entitled "Where Love Is"..."Echoes of Love" is the last tune on the LP and one I helped write...memory not what it once was...lol
