Chuck Jackson is a different song to the other two - it's written by Van McCoy, the other one's written by David (Crawford).

The other version of the Van McCoy song - unissued at the time of recording, and also cut for Wand - is by Lee Thomas. Ady's just compiled Lee Thomas onto the recent Kent CD 'Manhattan Soul Volume 1'

The lyrics do have some similarity, but they are most definitely two different songs.

ta - I had a nagging feeling someone was going to say that.

one set of lyrics definitely had a big influence on the other like you say :)

i'll keep an eye open for the Lee Thomas version.

We're talking about two different songs here folks. To confuse things further I think Kent mistakenly put the writer to Van McCoy's Millionaire as Dave Crawford back in the 80s.

The Chuck version was also done by

Billy Duke

Lee Thomas

and Tim Brown mentioned an early 70s cover in the last Manifesto. I don't think the ShadesOf Blue is the same song is it?

Ady, the Shades Of Blue version also credits Dave Crawford. I think that they are all virtually the same only the verses are sung in a different order.

Haven't got enough decks to play them all at the same time!

Yep Shades Of Blue is the same as Chuck's who's the writer credit Ken?

Sorry Ady don't know were me LP is but sOul45 as half answered your question.

Thanks for all the replies - I bow to the knowledge of my elders and betters.

If I was Van McCoy I'd be sniffing for half of Dave Crawford's royalties though

Bought a Billy Duke last night

I think that's the seventies version on Scorpio and the one I'm familiar with but did the version on Brent actually come out in the sixties?

Hello,

I've always considered all of them to be versions (or adaptations) of the same song - attributed to Dave Crawford.

I did some research on this song years ago, but as Dave and Van are both deceased it may be that we'll never know for sure.

But it's a great song.

I've got Dave Crawford on Brent as 1967, later than the Billy Duke that credits Van and Luther Dixon so he's been a bit naughty along the way! Anyone got a Brent scan? I've never heard it.

Hello,

That makes sense because the song really is the kind of thing you'd expect from someone such as Van McCoy or Luther Dixon in that era.

Bill Pinkney & The Original Drifters on Game from the Carolinas.

To me it's the best version and used to be a 'tape-swappers' fave'. I haven't heard it mentioned for a long time. Dave Crawford is listed as writer and the publisher is Harry Balk's Gomba Music.

Has anyone ever seen a copy of the 1967 Brent one listed in Manships? As he defo did it on an LA LP in 1977 I'm doubting as to whether this exists or not.

Ironically David Crawford would have been a millionaire but sadly he'd sold some of his best copyrights for peanuts when he had problems in the 1980s.

He could have lived very well just with the income from 'Young Hearts Run Free'.

He was really taken to the cleaners before he was murdered.

Very sad, a great talent.

Yes but they aren't 100% accurate

Hi Ady

Never posted on SS before but have just registered having read the Dave Crawford thread. I was sure I had a Dave Crawford 45 from many years ago and checked and I have the white Brent demo in front of me at the moment. Just listened to the Shades of Blue LP version and the words are virtually the same from one listen, just a bit more uptempo. The Brent one has Millionaire on both sides. Brent 7069 (ZTSP 124145). If I knew how to scan I would post it so you could see.

That's very interesting. Does it sound like a 1967 recording? I'd love to hear it and see a scan.

Cheers

Hi Ady

Sorry I have taken so long to get back to you. I've been working away this week.

I've managed to scan the record and have it saved as a pdf file but when I try to copy and paste it into this space nothing happens. Any idea how to do this then I can post it for you to see.

Thanks

  Thanks Dave

Ady - Hopefully this works. The son in law is round today and helped me do this. If it doesn'y I'll have another go. Also seen your PM. Will contact you.
