I used to go mad in the early days, specialy to tunes like george bensons supership and the ojays i love music, what i used to think of when i was getting into it was muhamad ali and the ali shuffle, i could dance fast just like ali doing his shuffle for a couple of records then i needed a rest, i think that i am still a pretty good mover even after all these years

Labels labels labels. If you can dance Northern to it its Northern.

If you can't its disco. If you fall asleep halfway through (even when dancing) it then it's likely to be crossover or nu soul.

If it's from the last 35 years it's modern, disco, nu soul, crossover, house or soulful garrige. If it's from before that it's either Northern or R&B.

In 1975/6 when these were getting played there was only one label and that was Northern Soul. The records all got mixed up from Paul Sinbad ' do what you got to do' to DC Larue 'Cathedrals'. In fact in most cases every record filled the floors.

it's funny, but i wouldn't consider these "modern" - to me they are just disco records that crossed over to the northern scene

for me, the "birth" of the "modern" genre was about 1980 - i can still remember standing on the balcony at the casino hearing janice, just ask me, keep it up, keys to the city, i'm so happy, i need love, never had a love so good, etc, etc, etc and feeling that something a bit different was happening - and the old (established) shufflers like flame and king, velvet hammer, chuck jackson, etc sounded too dated to fit in with this.

of course, imo, all of the records i've quoted as "modern" in 1980 would now be regarded as northern 7ts!!!

anyway.....just a matter of opinion i spose

did you read steveM's tape listing from the upstairs room at the birmingham locarno in this (all our yesterdays) section?

i'd forgotten a lot of those records - that was the birth of modern era, and the locarno should be more recognised for that - there were other (interesting) things than stafford going on at the time

Yeah me old mate Robin Salter listed it too . 80/81 The modern scene was born. Searling Sam & Fenn etc.. I have been told that Glyn Thornhill has a book in the making about the scene in the 80's

I would get my records from Gary who lived in Cockfosters and guy I was with at the time, who would buy them for me, it was always 'hush hush' about 'modern' / '70ts' in them days. i was the only modern-boy in the village me....yeah, i'm modern - get over it!

seriously though, that was one of the main reasons i left the northern scene, cos i got fed up with people wanting to fight me - not that i didn't like fighting when i was a youngster, but it just seemed so childish to be having a punch up cos somebody liked different music to me, instead of a more mature reason (such as they supported the wrong football team)

micks still about, he's record dealing, new stuff dance soulful house etc. we've actually managed to drag him along to the last two half time orange do's in leicester and the odd leicester city game to boot along with shelvo and pete shirley, which is ironic as there aint too much modern to entertain such high ranking modden luminaries at the orange lol..
