The first northern record I ever bought was;

The Ad Libs Nothings Worse Than Being Alone on a Share multi coloured Issue.

I bought it at Ralphs records near Victoria staion in Manchester, think Zan was there at that time.

We were on our way to the Torch, I had heard it at the L'Ambassadeur in

Bradford, and I reckon it was played at the Wheel.

I would suggest Dave Godin took it to the Wheel not Wigan.

Agreed, that must just be a slip up as opposed to a lie. He states "hadn't even been issued in America" when in fact Ad-libs "Nothing" was released on Share in '69 so he couldn't have meant Casino.

Mmm, yes you're right. To be fair to Dave, he wasn't doing that well wen I met him. His memory was fuzzy and I had to go and redo a few things because he admitted he couldn't always remember that well.

Great stuff............... its a shame we don`t have Dave on audio tape / film footage [ or is there stuff around?] because i could listen to him for hours. I used to head straight for Dave`s column in Blues & Soul every fortnight , he articulated how i felt in words & for that i will always be grateful to him.

I first met him in Manchester a good few years back , i walked over & introduced myself & we started talking.......... it was a good few months later that he came up to me at a Ritz nighter & to my disbelief [ & i was secretly delighted ] he remembered my name & we started talking as if we were lifelong friends. I have to say i was kinda star struck ........ i knew i was in the presence of a very, very, special human being.

Yeah, wouldn't it be mar-v-lus to watch on film an interview with Dave GODin. He pops up a couple of times on this clip. In fact I enjoy this whole clip.

Sorry to jump in on this thread, found it interesting reading. I have got an audio tape of Richard Searling interviewing Dave Godin on his Radio Hallam, Soul Sauce show in about 1984 ish. Not sure what quality the tape is in ,cos I haven't played it for years. I do have a friend who can convert tapes to c.d. , so will try and do that at some stage.

I also found, in the box, a playlist of what he plays on the tape (there might be some spelling mistakes as i can't read some of the writing properly), so this is what is on the tape ;

Thanks for posting this Bill, its fantastic. I`ll always regret not going up to say hello and meeting Dave at my friend Randy Cozens` funeral. It didnt seem important on the day.Randy knew Dave very well for many years and used to engage in mammoth long phone conversations with him and ,consequently, Dave gave a little speech at his funeral. I always read any piece i see from Dave, they`re never less than brilliant. So perceptive. I never quite understood his intense hatred for the Stones[which he mentioned on more than one occasion !] but i know that he did personally have some dealings with Jagger when they were younger. Ive always felt that the Stones came into their own when they started penning their own material as opposed to covering other peoples........Dave was also right about some losing the plot with rareity. Ring any bells ?

Interesting,also, to see some of the stuff Dave was playing as choices on Radio Hallam[Thanks for posting that Barry].....Jean Plum, Bessie Banks, Atantic Starr etc All big faves too.

Its a sobering thought as well just what an influential charactor Dave was,truly mindboggling.....

I miss hearing Dave's lovely voice. I used to speak to him for hours on the phone and one day when I wasn't home, he left a particularly long and hilarious message on my ansaphone which I saved to amuse myself. When he died I kept hold of it and planned to forever until I had a power cut which wiped the machine. Devastated! I can still hear his voice anyway-like it was yesterday-he would like that!

I forgot to thank you for posting the super article. I hope that this brings out some

more articles which would otherwise be lost possibly forever and which

would be a shame.

I don't have anything on tape to offer but I recall Dave being a guest on the Andy Peebles

show on Piccadilly Radio in 1977 or early 1978. Three of the 45's he

brought along and played were:

Lifestyle - Katrina- MCA (new release)

Deniece Chandler &

Lee Sain - Hey baby - Toddlin' Town

(Deniece Williams had recently been in concert in Manchester)

Bobby Lee Fears - Exodus - Forward

All super records and they went straight onto my wants list.

Going to listen to the full tape then get it copied to c.d. Not sure how to put it on computer via a link as I'm still quite new to the workings of this modern technology. It says on the tape it was actually recorded in 1982. All the best, Barry, KGB, KTF.

Ey up Tony, still got some old tapes from the early 80's from R.S.'show. Back then I taped mainly oldies off the show, not sure of quality, haven't played them for ages. I suppose I only kept them for reference. To the wife it's rubbish, but we know better, all the best, Barry, KGB, KTF.

Dave and I did Richard's Jazz FM show out of Manchester when one of his Deep Soul Treasures came out and Doug Hall drove him over once too so they must be around somewhere. He always said that series of CDs was the pinnacle of his musical life which when you consider his achievements with Motown and Northern is a huge compliment to the music.

..agree...i had this tune on tape from around '72..however, great interview..my regret is not interviewing him myself..my brother did..and as dave was into films and i worked in the film industry he constantly urged me to meet him, i was always working..so never did..a true godfather of soul...

Thats a good interview with Dave , many thanks for posting it up .Like many Soul fans of the late 60's and early 70's ,I was highly influenced by Dave's thought provoking articles in Blues and Soul magazine and later Black Music magazine , often reviewing great records ,years before they became popular and the cream of the new releases of the day ,Jeff Perry and Debbie Taylor on Arista and Grover Mitchell on Vanguard always stand out for me as " Dave Godin " records .I was also very lucky to spend a day in London with Dave with some more local Soul friends at the age of 17 , Dave was kind enough to take us to Black Music offices and various record shops like Black Wax , he also took us to Blues and Soul , but felt he couldn't go in at the time , due to his recent defection to Black Music publication . In later years I hooked up with Dave again and we swopped tapes of Deep Soul records , and I also enjoyed his articles in Pete Lawson and Dave Rimmer's magazines . So Dave was a massive influence on my Soul music collecting habits , a guy with impeccable taste and a real talent for selling a record to us via the written word . I still enjoy playing the tapes of Dave's various appearances on Richard Searling's Soul Source radio show . Best wishes ,Eddie
