Request.... Just A Question

Why is it when people put there playlists up in the Pure Playlist section of Soul Source, do they feel the need to post...... "REQUEST" after certain records they have played from their set

And before the usual clever dick comment comes.......... yes I know its a request, but its as if its going to cause them some embarrassment for playing it ?

I maybe wrong

When Dj'ing I prefere the Blues Brothers aproach when they are at Bob's Country Bunker..." What are all these bits of paper? They don't mean anything, they are just requests...go with a regular set "

The only reason I can think of is that it might give others an idea of the sorts of sounds the dancers are asking for at a venue rather than what the DJ thinks they should hear.

yep...not embaressed to play anything in my playbox...isnt the whole point of 'playlists' on soulsource is to show others whats been danced to around the country..so if its the dancers choice and not the djs why not tell us that too

playlists on soul source could also be used to make a DJ look more popular than what they are, especially if they show they have played a few requests.

Heyup Dukes

Know what you mean there ....makes a change i usually get asked not to play certain records :sweatingbullets:

Joking aside it works both ways i suppose....kinda tells you the guy is up for and has no probs in taking requests ..or like you say it could be a case of " don't blame me ,someone asked for it" ..in a rather sheepish " i know it's shite but who am i to say no"

On a tangent but one for me is ,why put wdj or acetate or why even bother listing a C/U :)

Good post. you forgot 'No Swearing' this is because some P.C.s software will render the material as not suitable and won't open. That would never do if you have paid up advertisers with banner adds.

I always think the only reason people put "request" is because they wouldn't normally play it and only played it cause they were asked....sort of ashamed to play it.

Folk putting 'request' alongside a selection on a playlist are doing so because if it's less than a 3 figure value it kinda spoils the whole cock waving excersise, though stating it was the rarer issue/demo can go some way to ease the situation, and if it's on the rarer of 2 or more labels then all bases are covered

well put, totally agree, whats the problem with showing that a track played was a request certainly isnt something im "embarrassed"

about showing on a playlist!

I like Marc Forrest - great synopsis there, not that it affects me though :)

For this particular question though, if a DJ posts lots of playlists and certain records are always on it because it's been requested, that would then show it wasn't necessarily part of his planned plays in case people think he's battering the same old stuff. I say this because when I'm in the company of certain jocks I do tend to ask for the records I know they have that I adore and if it weren't for my request they may well not have played it

Marc,

Not saying its wrong mate, or you can, cannot do it, people can request what they want, calm your skin bro, just asking the question as to why thats all? :D

This thread has nothing to do with the Soul Source rules, who can do what and who's breaking this rule and that rule, I dont give a flying fcuk,

Perhaps theres not as many people posting on here because every time a thread gets posted people are straight on the offensive and often feed in lines from other non related threads.......its tantamount to Hijacking IMHO........

I`m one of them that puts request on playlists, reason being:

1/So other people know what punters wanna hear.To let other dj`s see what`s in vogue etc.

2/To show punters that if you pm/ask in advance(unless i have record in box) i will take requests if i can fit it the set.

I don`t feel ashamed to play any records i have,if i have it`s cos i like it,i`ve never bought a record cos` it`s in vogue`/cock wave brigade` etc.

Hope this answers your question

Generally, I agree with Matt Male.

If you're embarrassed by a record why do you own it, let alone take it out?

Can of worms John

Its a case of not everyone is a collector /dj who play what they believe in..some actually buy records to be a popular dj.

Reminds me of the time i sold a well known 45 out of my sales box to a guy ....

when someone asked him what he'd been buying ,he rather sheepishly said "i don't really like the record but it goes down great with the dancers"

Same guy plays almost the same records everytime he dj's and yawns throughout his own set....i kid ye not biggrin.gif

Posted

O.k.my take on this is.....

If I'm asked to do a spot (rarely!!) then knowing what roughly the punters at that particular do are expecting to hear then I pull together say about 30 records that I'll pick 20 out to play in an hour.

On I go ,nobody before's played any of these or just a couple or so then I'm happily spinning my mindset of tunes and someone requests summit that I wasn't planning on playing but is in my box and therefore IMO worthy of a play but wasn't what I expected then I would note this as a request if asked later for a playlist.

If on the other hand I was asked to play for example "The Shite" by Al Shtipants and obviously it wouldn't be in my playbox, not even in my collection then I would smile and say, sorry,no and that would be that, hope that this is the correct etiquette?

i hate playing requests and get slagged off sometimes for refusing too but i dont give a fook, just cos 1 person wants a certain record played doenst mean to say that the rest of the venue wants to hear it  but then again if its in my playbox why not play it cos it wouldnt be in there otherwise and i reckon its either the embarrasment of playing a said choon (often cheesy tunes have request next to them) or they are just trying to say "hey look at me im a peoples dj"

and why do big money rare records get the cock waving comments, is that a jealousy thing or small willy complex  only joking Pete laugh.gif

I don't know how anybody can plan their plays in advance. Every night is different - even if it is a regular event in the same venue.

Of course we all have an idea what we are going to play but surely that evolves as the set progresses?

If someone asks for something and I have it with me I always try my best to play it. As long as it is not near the end of the set you can 'gear' the other records you play in order to fit requests in. It is only when people have their set 'rigid' in their minds that requests disrupt the flow and momentum of a spot.

Perhaps people should start requesting DJs to not play certain records laugh.gif

 very good Paul,

i don't/won't do playlists but thats me, thats not to say nobody should, I enjoy browsing playlists to try and get an idea of what the said venue is about,

What I am not interested in is if a tune was a request, if it was a demo or an issue and if it just happened to be on it's rarest label,

Like I said in a previous post, show me a playlist where the requests are the rarest/highest valued selections on the list, just an observation, some playlists are just that, playlists, others are littered with disclaimers, get out of jail free cards and are just missing the 'aren't I a clever boy, PM to book me' footnote,

Hope you keeping well Pete thumbsup.gif totally agree with you Pete and to me sometimes it seems that peeps put so much to their play lists that it is just an attempt to show off or even more to pimp themselves out  i do occasionaly post a playlist but only for a reflection of what the night musically was about so hopefully that might encourage or not peeps to come along next time or not, i really hate reading some playlists though cos it shows what a great night ive missed or luckily missed and also sick of seeing my wants getting played

Personally I don't give a toss what people's supposed 'motives' may or may not be or what they do or don't write on them,

just grateful that some take the time and make the effort to give folk a flavour of what's being played round and about, chance to maybe check something new out etc etc. No one forces anyone to do anything of course but I always think there's far more preciousness and / or insecurity involved in actively refusing to do one. huh.gif

Phil I could list numerous reasons why I don't do playlists, time and memory would be a good start,

But if truth be known I just can't be arsed, no preciousness or insecurity whatsoever, to each his own and all that,

PS thats a request not an order

some good tongue in cheek (i hope) posts on this thread but also sadly a lot of negative thinking ones which is strange cos when i go to a soul nite most people i meet are very positive and dont normally think the worst of people

its also gone from about requests to why put a playlist up at all...you are entitled to your opinions ofcourse but personally i do it simply to tell people what im playing at our night...no ulterior motive...not looking for bookings ...not cock waving ! most if not all of my tunes are easily available...as for ashamed or embaressed to play it .... why the f*ck have it in your playbox ?.....

i always have a ruff idea what im playing,a mix of new buys...recent spins our younger crowd are getting to know and classics for the oldies fans...but if someone requests a tune ive got it makes it interesting trying to work that tune into a set and then you may go off on another tangent and some of the tunes you thought you were gonna play get left till next time and tunes get played you'd completely forget about...

think i played 2 requests last week...the first was i surrender ok an overplayed tune but still a good record and the person requesting was a new comer to our night. so why not? after all i want him to have a good time and comeback ..the second was the flip of bonnie brisker i had played earlier which was requested by a youngish regular...he knew i had it obviously and its another nice tune......a lot slower than most i play so i enjoyed working a few slower tunes in around it...although soon had requests to speed it up again which suited me fine!

at the end of the day i like looking at playlists to see what people/venues are playing im interested... im not judging...i ,wrongly it seemed, thought that was the point and most people thought the same way..

Firstly, why have I never been to one of these cock waving events ? Might have been interesting wink.gif

Secondly, I like reading playlists and don't consider it untoward if mentioned that something was played by request. After all, as others have said, why own it/give it space in your playbox if it isn't in with the chance of a worthy spin ?

Couldnt wave my cock ,even if it was a REQUEST!:hatsoff2:

Posted

I don't think anyone is complaining about play lists being posted? The topic was started because they couldn't understand why Dj's who put up a play list felt the need to tell everyone whether a record was a request.

Play lists are good :hatsoff2:

Posted

========================================================================================== As someone who is a 'born again' Soulie....I find playlists invaluable. :hatsoff2: I was absent for over 25 years........1979 to 2005.....I have missed out on stacks of stuff. The earlier within that 25 years a 45 became prominent then the greater the probability that it receives little or no play in current times because of course it will be classed as an 'oldie'!!!! Also...I trawl playlists and often see titles in the list I don't recognise. However, on checking them out on youtube I immediately recognise some of them as tunes I loved back in the day even though I didn't know the title/artist...... As for the 'cock waving'.......why not? DJ's are spending a lot of time and money on locating and buying original vinyl. Are folk content to listen to CD's or stuff on 'Sevens' & 'Kent'?????.....perhaps some are but you know, I still think a sizeable majority of audiences would feel let down / cheated if they knew the DJ was playing boots and reissues. Therefore I also see playlists that give detail of the 45 as a mark of respect to the punters....."Look, this is what I played for you and it cost....so I hope you feel you have been given your money's worth". I'm not suggesting that expensive or rare automatically means 'good' and there is a responsibility on the DJ to craft the set. That said some (and speaking as a punter) 'rare, expensive and good' can be very, very good and make the set very special indeed.

Best

dogstoat

Hi dogstoat, not sure why you quoted me, however, if you read all my comments you will see I have no problem whatsoever with playlists, I merely stated an opinion as to why some (not all) state request (as per topic) on some selections, and that I personally don't do playlists, which as far as I am aware is up to me,

That was before I looked at it from your angle, so from now on when asked to take a box anywhere I will endeavour to either take a notebook or not have a drink to enable me to compile a playlist sometime later, then I will find the time to type it all out with my very slow 1 finger typing style, just so those that couldn't be arsed for a decade or 3 can check out what they might have missed (though there won't be too much in most of my sets ), apologies for any inconsideration on my part :hatsoff2:

Look into my eyes...into my eyes......in the eyes...not around the eyes......":hatsoff2:

yes but the topic isn't about play lists is it, it is about the need to put "request" at the end of a record in your play list :hatsoff2:
