Just got back from Morrisons and the economic situation has finally hit home.

For the first time ever I went to the calendar, looked at the nights we'd planned to go to over the next four weeks and decided that two out of the four would have to go. Is anyone else starting to cut back on nights out, or the distance you're willing to travel, cut back on record buying, negotiate harder on prices. Where is the scene going to be in two years?

This isn't a thread for political rant's, put aside the rights and wrongs of how the situation arose and how it should be dealt with and just let us know whether it's had an effect on the 'soulful' part of your lifestyle.

defo doing less for various reasons, price of petrol so not doing the long journeys simply cant afford them, buying a house isnt helping and defo buying less records, if i could afford it i would be out every week like i used to be cos i miss me ventuers oop north and London events :hatsoff2:

" Cutting back " ? If anything , Lady B and I have ( please excuse the non - intentional pun ) stepped up a gear in respect of venue visiting since the beginning of the year , and are usually out and about every Friday and Saturday unless something intervenes .

Distance can be an issue , but if the event is creditable , the travelling is worthwhile .

Well sort of , we do think twice about going to a long distance do's now , because petrol costs are so high , but you can also cut down in other areas , like food . I don't spend anywhere near the amount I used to spend on food . I waste less and cook traditional meals that came from a thrifty cook book , amazing how far lentils can go.

This month I did my own low lights and didn't have my hair cut because I wanted to buy two records that I just couldn't resist

Larry William - Boss lovin five dollars  and Exceptional three & Ruby Carter - Unlucky Girl fifty dollars  all in thats about 40 quid for two treeeeeeemendos sounds.

Next time there is an election do not vote Tory ! They love it, how long they been in now we are going backwards

atb

keep left

to be honest i blame Labour so i will never vote for them again and also for the bloke in the local corner shop cos he put the price of beens up 4p and dont get me started on the milk man his prices are ridiculous have you seen what he wants for a pint of milk and carton of orange juice and he only drives an electric vehicle  keep right or you will have a head on with an old girl on a mobility scooter

have you ever been in debt management ?? i have 3 friends who are and guess what their over spending under labour wasnt solved over night its a debt they will be paying back for a long time

on a serious note, living down in Southampton we have loads going on but apart from a couple of nights the rest just dont do it for me so to get a decent fix of soul we have to travel at least 2 hours and for our favourites its a 4 hour each way journey, 2.4 v6 car dont help i know but put price of drinks and cost of admission on top then just for a 2 hour trip we get not much change from £100 so a trip to Lifeline, Burnley, Rugby etc etc will be even more expensive, we have to pick and choose very carefully now but hey when we do get our its worth it  oh and an addiction to buying new records dont help the cause but ive been very good lately and sold to buy, just a sign of the times and living down south i suppose

No from me too - the only thing that hampers my going out is that I can't physically manage two all-nighters in a row and function normally for work on a Monday  That said, I don't go out just for the sake of it; it's got to be a nighter I know I'm going to enjoy.

The price of fuel/ trains/ hotels for long distance travel to soul events is making a difference for sure....

The ammount of soul nights now does mean that many can get a fix without going too far..

On the record buying.. Plenty of real quality stuff thats cheap as chips, many bargains to be had on ebay and sales lists, many dealers are slashing prices as they have to offload stock thats been lying around for too long..

The record trades side seems to be really growing too... A good way to get some new sounds and offload some stuff that aint doing it for you anymore..

I've cut down for few reasons, finances do come into it but it's mainly because of work, too much of it......too knackered to go out some weekends, was going to Radcliffe last week but was shattered. I work 13/15 hours every day, often away most of the week and simply don't have the energy to go out some weekends, plus I've others to think about now not just myself and not always fair to be away all week then go out at the weekends.

Too many venues that simply don't interest me, some quality out there though and not had many weekends in this year so far.

And on a serious note Mr White, look what happened to Eddie today! Life's for living not working so hard.

yes, but not cos of finances - just sick of hearing the same 50 songs.

Hi Glyn

Seems a strange reason to me as i have plenty of choice with regards to venues playing something different, just don't have the time and energy to take them all in anymore.. Maybe i am lucky living in the Manchester area...

Same 50 songs?? where is this Northern soul desert?? aint there many options for other events where you live?? answer via a message if its a delicate matter but i am interested to know...

 .Why's that.? I mean why are you putting up with the same 50 songs.?

Back on topic.

Said i was going to do one niter/soul nite per month this year (resolution),but my travelling partners looked at me like i 2 heads.:D .

Having to watch money, health, family matters etc and still pull in nighters....some times things have to give. And those things,in the main, are the soul nights.Got a couple of trips sorted for April, not looking beyond that for now.

I think the screws are going to tighten a bit more before it gets better.

Yes but not just the climate like chalky I also work a lot ,sometimes away from home so spending more time with the family at the weekends .

I used to make the effort mixing my family life & soul life but there doesn't seem anything out there worth make an effort for .

Soul nights , done so many the same I need gear to enjoy , the good ones I do , the club Caliante in Peterborough who have potential but don't get the support just makes me more disillusioned

Loved the nighters , could leave the likes of lifeline , Middleton , rugby and Burnley about 5 30/ 6 and still get home in time to make my wife breakfast in bed.

All worth the effort but cant afford it anymore , the last Burnley was brilliant and would make the effort for the next one but it cost me over £100 to attend .

I said I would cut back to one niter a month, not so much the cost but it's always a health thing with me...very boring...

Did Tadcaster last weekend and still ain't over it, getting bad when a soul nite puts me back.

But I supose it's saving pennies by me staying in, just sending Dean mad putting up with me when I'm on one...:D

I've chosen my night out for April, May, June, July, August, September, October & November so far...:lol::yes:

Hiya, well they may have changed cos i dont go to them anymore :D

what i'm trying to say is that there are only so many times, week in week out for 30+ years in the scene that you can listen to the same old same old .... flaminf f&^%ing emeralds, joy lovejoy, Frank Wilson etc etc, they're good songs but do they have to be played out every week?? .......... (Yawn) dont mind if it's interspersed with other stuff that doesnt get hammered, but quite a few nights just play 'safe' and you could almost set your watch by them.

I do actually completely understand why it's done as i see the other side of the coin too (been a professional jock for most of those 30 yrs) but as a punter i'm just saying i get musically tired

There's another reason too though, i will no longer spend nights out in draughty old church halls with a spitoon in the corner and chairs that wobble more than my backside (a mean feat as anyone who knows me will testify!). I want a bit of comfort when i go out in a nice place is all.

this is kinda off topic so sorry, it was really an economical topic wasnt it.
